In the 2011 grand final we faced the same thing: Collingwood were awarded a goal which hit the post. But we were still able to overcome it & win. To be a champion team you have to do that.

The names in this game, and across the league at this time. This was the peak of AFL, it just doesn't compare now. Ablett, Ling, Bartel, Selwood, Chapman, Johnson, Taylor, Scarlett, Hawkins, Hayes, Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Goddard, Koschitzke, and so many more across the league. You had Lloyd, Fev, Franklin, Pavlich, Hall, Brown, Fletcher, Black, Judd, Swan, McLeod, Thompson, Goodes, Bolton, Kirk, Jack It could go on and on. I honestly think the quality of players has dropped off and Ive barely touched on like 6 teams worth of stars. Daicos is good, but the fact that a 20 year old in his 2nd season was going to win a brownlow until his injury speaks more about the league than him. I love Cripps but he, Wines and Neale (to name a few recent brownlows) cannot hold a candle to that list. Then you've got the recent colemans of Curnow, McKay, Cameron. Solid players, especially Curnow, but again its not even close. 3 of the past 5 Colemans coming from a rubbish Carlton side (for 2/3 at least) speaks volumes of the league.

In the scheme of things, this was Geelong's most important victory, for that period of their history. A loss would probably have killed the spirit a bit, with the 2008 loss to Hawthorn hanging over them, and only an easy victory over Port Melbourne in 2007 to be happy with. But, this victory rewarded their potential, with the 2011 victory over Collingwood sealing their greatness as a team. I can't help thinking that the loss of Paul Chapman to suspension in 2013 cost us the 2013 Preliminary final to Hawthorn. A different result could easily have lead to another flag in 2013. Oh well. Now it's 2022. Go cats.

It was a fantastic Grand Final as good as the 2006, but better for me cause I'm a cats fan. Saints were fantastic and I really feel for them and the fans. They will get there though, it's only a matter of time. It might be a rematch this year, who knows.

Johnson's kick to Ablett at 2:17 is too loopy. Dawson closed fast and did a good job. It was Scarlett's brilliant, risky toe-poke that sank the Saints. Props also due to Travis Varcoe at 2:32. 99 percent of forwards would have snapped over their shoulder. Credit to him for dishing to Chapman. Scarlett needn't rush the behind at 7:01. He could have gone from hero to villain of the piece if Harry Taylor hadn't taken that huge decisive packmark from the subsequent kick-in (7:28). Go Cats!

Yes. Even Mark Thompson admits the team was lucky that day. The 2009 Cats were definitely not the best version, and on a dry day, I think the Saints would have definitely gotten the chocolates. All things considered, this match is probably the most heartbreaking / gut-wrenching GF loss ever (definitely up there anyway), and I'm not even a Saint's fan. As Tim Lane says, they didn't deserve to lose. Having said that, the Geelong 2008 team was even better and they obviously lost as well. It really is a beautiful, yet brutal game at the same time.

Shannon Byrnes also gets a critical touch in the goal-square at 2:32. At that moment the Cats have two players on their feet in the square, and the Saints have six. Yet Byrnes somehow taps it to Varcoe. Brilliant. Jones hurt the Saints. Trying an inside out kick up the wing (2:05) is bad decision making. He didn't have a lot of space, but he had enough for a drop-punt into the corridor where Riewoldt was leading. Taylor's mark is the turnover that ends in the Chapman goal.
