I can only dream of what a chant like this would have sounded like inside the Pantheon in Rome, Assuming they used the old Roman style of singing hymns. Beautiful Byzantine chants!! Thank you for this.

@KittenButter : Domine, audivi auditum tuum, et timui; consideravi opera et expavi; In medio duorum animalium innotesceris; dum appropinquaverint anni, cognosceris; dum advenerit tempus, ostenderis. In eo, dum conturbata fuerit anima mea; in ira misericordiae memor eris. Deus a Libano veniet, et Sanctus de monte umbroso et condenso. Operuit caelos majestas ejus; et laudis ejus plena est terra.

Lord, I heard your voice, and I was afraid; I considered the works and was afraid; In the midst of two animals you will be known; while the years draw near, you will be known; when the time comes, you will be shown. In it, while my soul was troubled; in the wrath of mercy you will be remembered. God will come from Lebanon, and the Holy One from a shady and congested mountain. His majesty covered the heavens; and the earth is full of his praise.

This is a very direct and confronting type of chant. And it doesn't seem to have the kind of pop value Gregorian chant has. I'm not religious myself, but this still impresses me. It's music for staying awake, not for dreaming away.

PaganFreak9210 I honestly do not think that the problem that keeps Roman Catholics and Orthodox apart is music or even rite. The unification of the Churches is a matter that goes much deeper than that. We have followed distinctly divergent paths in the past 1000 years and we have, regrettably, become different men, both theologically and liturgically.

A few years ago (2007) Ensemble Organum and the Fraternity of St. Peter (who celebrate only the traditional Roman rite) organized a training course about chant. Actually this chant could be used in liturgy as long as the texts remain unchanged. Chant from composers can be used... so this technique too. The main difficulty I can imagine is that the Old Roman repertoire is not the same used in Gregorian. But this particular chant is used on Good Friday Liturgy.

You are correct, DanVilAI. My friends and I are organizing a chant group, a schola if you will, and while we are currently immersing ourselves in the Gregorian tradition, we are also making plans to learn and use certain chants and antiphons from other rites and liturgies for use in the Novus Ordo -the new order of the Roman rite mass.

I would say it sounds similar to greek chant but not too much. It is primarily the use of tetrachord harmony in droning that gives this sense of similarity. Greek (byzantine) chant is a bit different in style.

@Callixtinus Exactly. Latin and Orthodox are two different civilisations. Following Felix Koneczny - in Latin civilization, the ethics is the source of law, in Orthodox legal government has absolute authority and lawmakers are above moral rules.

Indeed, the liturgical development reflects the theological development of the two branches of Christianity, You correctly point out that the this chant is more alive, and it is so indeed since the church of Rome was part of the living Church of Christ in the 6th century! Since then, it has died.

No, the coptic liturgy just like all the other rites have evolved. There is no documentation of old roman chant or ancient coptic chant. These are reconstructions at best.

I wonder if the actual rubrics allow the use of this form of chant in a liturgy, wether the Ordinary Form or Extraordinary Form. Thew form of the Roman rite of the VI-VIII centuries is relatively well known, but not in use.
@DanVilAl

I think this style of chanting could be used in Roman liturgy. Certainly in the 1970 missal that allows many variations (including the banal music used today), maybe in the 1962 missal which prefers gregorian chant in the solesmes style. The main difficulty maight be that Old Roman has a different repertoire of chants than Gregorian (but as Gregorian is a descendant, many chants coincide). Probably adapting the proper of the missal to this interpretation is likely.

Any way of knowing the authenticity of the music? I mean, how do we know it sounded like this circa 7th century AD? I know that music was written much differently pre-dark ages / romantic period, than we have today. Just curious!! I dig anything pre-romantic / pre-dark age. Really cool stuff!

We don't know for sure, the oldest surviving manuscripts for Old Roman Chant are from the second part of the 11th century. On the first page of the St Cecilia manuscript (ca. 1070) the author said he was copying an older manuscript. This manuscript was probably not older than the early 10th century, though.

No earlier Old Roman manuscript survives. I've heard it speculated that the manuscript he was copying from was a Gregorian manuscript, that he used for consulting. That could be the case, but it's not a total surety.

As interesting as this sounds, it seems to me veeeery questionable from a historical point of view. It sounds really as Gregorian Chant adapted to the style of Modern Day Greek Byzantine Music (the so-called Neobyzantine Style). Is there ANY evidence for 1) the use of Ison-style drones and 2) the employment of chromatic and enharmonic scales (which, to my knowledge, had fallen out of use centuries before the end of classical antiquity), or at least, microtonal alterations? I mean, all of this is already disputable if the 19th century "restitution" of the musica sacra of Byzantium was right in these points, but to apply it to Western Chant seems to me even more daring...
@matthewgalicia1101
@matthewgalicia1101 2 жыл бұрын
There is evidence of your first point. The man who made the medieval square notation that Gregorian chant uses today mentions the use of organum. A couple other folks in the 10th century also mention the use of organum in the west. You can actually see this in gregorian chant today, in the use of the so called "sub-tones". The group Harpa Dei sing Gregorian like this. The East and West both used the 8 tone system inherited from the Greeks. And the men who created the notation for Gregorian say that organum was used in all the chants. I found these facts interesting. Also this "Roman" chant is not using enharmonic or chromatic scales. Most of it is diatonic, much like byzantine chant actually. Anyway, you have some good questions, and there are fascinating answers to them! May the Lord bless you!

Amen!

Make Christianity Great Again. Rid the West of all papal herecies and remove Gregorian chant. Bring back the TRUE chants like these and the Byzantines.
@coemgenus6251
@coemgenus6251 7 жыл бұрын
You might want to rethink your proposal to "remove Gregorian chant": 1) The oldest written Old Roman chant is from 1071, and the oldest written Gregorian chant is from the 800s. 2) The Carolingians got Gregorian chant from Rome. They didn't just make it up. 3) Both genres are provably parallel dialects of the same chant. In other words, they are the same chant. We're just not singing them correctly to tell. 4) Gregorian chant originally had a sound more like this. The modern 'plainsong' interpretation is not the correct way to sing it.
@deGahlon
@deGahlon 7 жыл бұрын
Gregorian Chant is believed to be a synthesis of Old Roman Chant and Gaulic Chant. Thus, Gregorian Chant is an authentic liturgical development from the sacred tradition of the Latin Church rather than a papal heresy. There are Orthodox Christian parishes under the patriarchate of Antioch that use Gregorian Chant in their divine liturgies. While doctrine does not develop within Orthodoxy, its liturgy continues to develop throughout the centuries.
