Just to clarify the term "gora" is not a derogatory term, it's actually used in the positive.
@Shakeel_._Ahmed2 жыл бұрын
@Callum - gora and kala litterally means light and dark in terms of shade. Pakistani people often refer to white people as goray, as in lighter/pale people. It's used in a descriptive way without any malice. For example if we had a pale skinned or dark skinned friend of our own race we may refer to the skin tone as part of thier description. It is lazy, they know your name is Callum, but they weren't being offensive.

Callum British Pakistanis (who are actually Kashmiris) go to Mirpur because that is there home village in Azad Kashmir (Pakistan). There is a lot of Kashmiri diaspora in the U.K. most people are from two districts mainly Mirpur or Kotli. Btw Callum you should go Kotli as well. Scenery is much better, lots more mountains and hills although Mirpur is new because old Mirpur was where the Mangla Dam was. They moved it when the dam was built.

GORAH or GORHI are not necessarily derogatory. The essence of these terms is BEAUTY and FAIR SKINNED. Its about "roop" or complexion. Even light skinned asians e.g. people from north Pakistan and Afghanistan are sometimes called "goreh" to recognise their beauty. Pakistan (even India) has many love songs and folksongs about this. This is NOT to say that black or dark skinned people are automatically looked down upon or insignificant (that's a different topic entirely). Its a celebration of someone being different... in a good way. I don't know how to explain it, but like seeing a unicorn maybe? HOWEVER, some people have unfortunately, hijacked the term and applied it to white westerners broad brush - some have done this in an obvious malicious & racist manner. But what this means is that you are left in a predicament of trying to work out whether someone is genuinely complimenting you or being racist, which is difficult. Any term which has the potential of offending someone or making them uncomfortable should not be used in my opinion. The reality is Pakistan and many other "islamic" countries have forgotten what our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing upon him) taught us, which is that no one should not be judged on the colour of their skin (and no nationality or race is superior to another) but rather people should be judged on deeds. Someone once mentioned to me "lots of muslims in Pakistan, but not much Islam". The idiot in your video using foul language and calling you gorah has really embarrassed himself and Pakistan.
