God answered my prayer, this sermon was for me. i was reading the book of Judges last night and after i finish reading ch.19. it really rubbed me the wrong way so much that, i had to stop reading. every time i read that Israel did evil in the sight of God. i also thought that they just worship other gods, but now i know just how wicked and evil their actions actually were.

I think there’s a reason it’s put last, even though chronologically (these chapters mention Phineas) it occurred earlier. It’s not only a shocking example of moral degradation but reflects how brutally Israel could wipe out their own tribe but couldn’t exact that same zeal to the Canaanites who committed just as much evil and atrocity.

@22:39 When Isaiah said “Jesus shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.” It really shocked me bc we’re so quick judge and take sides. ‭But God knows how to perfectly handle disputes according to each one’s needs. Truly, It’s amazing to think about.

Left-handed men could be something to either do with fighting a southpaw could prove more difficult in melee combat or it could be something to do with Christians being superstitious about the left-handedness being a sign that they belong to the devil. Back in my first school, I was actually forced to write with my right hand despite being left-handed because of the idea that school had which was left-handed people belonged to the devil. Imagine what being told that you belong to the devil did to me at the age of five.

From what, I understand from sports, is that left handed individuals have an advantage, because most people, are used to dealing with right handed individuals, so someone coming at you with a sword in his left hand in the midst of battle can throw you off balance and maybe even into a panic. It gives you the element, of surprise. Just, a theory. It does say they were slingers though, which means they would throw stones, but, slingers could also be, melee, combat, units. I would assume this to be so. In the battle, I assume, that, the stone slingers of Benjamin would pelt the Israelites before engaging them in hand to hand combat. They would probably pelt the soldiers of Israel while their melee troops, engeged Benjamin's melee troops, from the side, or possibly from a hill or an elevated position. This is probably why it, is mentioned. It could justify the large casualties Israel suffers despite being 400,000 versus 25,000. Especially if Israel had no slingers to return fire, and had to fight under a constant barrage of stones knocking them out cold and cracking skulls, ribs, teeth, arms etc. Not a fun situation to be in.

I still can’t wrap my head around why the man would want to go to such great lengths to protect this stranger. Did he not realize that the men of the city would kill his daughter (just like they did to the concubine)? That’s a huge sacrifice to make for someone you just met. I get middle eastern culture where once one entered a house, they would have been covered by the master of the home under his sincere protection, but was his daughter not under the same covering? Did he have so many daughters that he could literally spare one? But for what? What would sacrificing his daughter do for the man? It reminds me of the “casting your pearls before swine” passage. Scratching my head at how the man could hold the life of his daughter in his hands with such little care with nothing to gain from such a loss.. Risked his daughters entire life for a man, who to my knowledge had nothing to offer - someone he just met and would probably never see again..
