Because after re-doing AVTAK (because MGM took the original down) I realised how slow and wooden the first lot of reviews are. I think the more confident style I have no is better and more accessable to any potential new viewers so that's why I'm re-doing the first four reviews

I've always interpreted the 13th or 14th day thing as Bond not being 100% sure of where Tatiana's loyalty lies, so he tells HER the wrong date in case she might inform someone of the attack. When Bond comes in to take the Lektor, she even says, "I thought it was for tomorrow but today's the 13th isn't it?"
@calvindyson
@calvindyson 11 жыл бұрын
The film makers definitely had it in mind as Klebb is flat-out stated as being a lesbian in Flemings original book. It's also mentioned in the DVD making of documentary and audio commentaries.

Could there be a correlation between this movie and OHMSS in terms of the 13th and 14th date. I dont know if you can remember the scnene from OHMSS with the knife trhown on the calander pointing to the 14th while in fact it was the 13th. It just sprung to mind when I was rewachting this video…. Could that be some correlation?

Bond told Tania the 14th but blew the consulate up on the 13th to catch Tania off balance just in case she was planning on betraying him and having him arrested (which of course she wasn't but it just reinforces how Bond's mindset works, also keep in mind that at this point both Bond and M are convinced that Tania is trying to lure them into a trap).

I will defend the slapping of Tracy by Bond in 'OHMSS' by pointing out that Tracy's behaviour is unstable to the point of endangering Bond repeatedly and Bond has just fought one serious henchman in Tracy's apartment. From Bond's point of view he needs to get across to Tracy that he's not accepting any more 'games'. It's a single slap (though hard) and I think, given the circumstances, it's understandable. NOTE: I am not condoning slapping/hitting women in any and all circumstances, just when you're in danger and don't know what is going on, except that it all centers on a person, who just happens to be pointing a loaded gun at you, after disengaging the safety mechanism!!!!!!!!!!!.

The Bond theme is used in Dr No and this movie quite differently than later in the series. Later in the series, once Bond and the theme were well known, the theme is used in action scenes indicating that Bond is doing something amazingly cool and "James Bondy." In the early movies the theme is used as the background to scenes of international travel and high living and indicates glamour. Jet travel was very expensive cf. to today and staying in a fancy hotel beyond the reach of many viewers. For those used to later films in the series, the theme usage seems "wrong" but this was not the case when FRWL first released.

12:35 If you listen carefully to the dialogue, the plan takes place on the 13th. Bond told Tanya it was supposed to be the 14th to catch her off guard in case she was in on the trap.

I'm just doing the first few Connery films again. Largely because, with time, I don't think my first few reviews have aged very well, I'm very wooden in them, they're very slow etc. And so I thought I'd give the first few a bit of an update! I'll just do Goldfinger and Thunderball next and then that'll be it.

Great film. Best title. Good song. Great villains. Beautiful girls. One of the best allies to Bond. Also, one of the few films that can maintain a rather slow pace but somehow manage to keep the majority of people entertained.

When M and Bond were listening to that recording, it created a continuity error further in the series. Bond here states that Bond and M were in Tokyo but in You Only Live Twice, Bond claims that he has never been to Tokyo prior to the films events.

Fun Fact: From Russia With Love was a favorite novel of former deceased American President John F. Kennedy. During his presidency, JFK considered one of Fleming's Bond Novels, From Russia with Love, one of his favorites of all time. Fleming had also met Kennedy in Washington, in 1960, discussing a way to overthrow Fidel Castro and about his novel. It also made From Russia with Love one of the US' best sales since they boomed as a result of Kennedy and Fleming's meetup. During the Cuban missile crisis JFK stated that he wished James Bond was on his staff, going off Bond's portrayal in Dr. No. There are also rumors that even tho the film was released in the US a year after he was assassinated (This film came out a month before he was murdered), he managed to get to watch the film, making FRWL Kennedy's last film he ever watched. Incredible

Thanks Calvin, Your reviews are most entertaining. I've recently been reading the books in order for the first time. FRWL is the fifth book, and ironically something of a tougher read than the first four on account of it being SO like the film (minus the SPECTRE bits), that you know exactly how it's going to play out. Congrats again on the reviews. I think if you were to take on reviewing the books, i'd for one would be most interested

Hmmmm. I know you don't agree but I myself believe in the codename theory. In fact, in the movie The Rock, the Sean Connery character is supposed to be the elderly first 'James Bond'. There are plenty of hints in the film to that effect.

Lots of good reasons for why Bond changed the date to the 14th (mostly to trick them), but in OHMSS, Bond throws a dagger at a Calendar hitting the 14th. When Draco says, "But today is the 13th," Bond says "I'm superstitious."

The 13th or 14th thing was Bond taking precautions against a trap. He told her he would be doing this on the 14th but then showed up on the 13th, just in case she had planned to have other agents there waiting for him on the 14th and she is confused because he turned up a day early.

I agree that the James Bond theme is not effective when Bond is checking out his hotel room. It seems out of place. The James Bond theme is also misused in "Live and Let Die," when Bond is in the taxi and tailing Mr. Big into Harlem. (a) The rendition is loud and obnoxious. (b) It adds nothing the the scene. But then, I think "Live and Let Die" has many non-Bond elements, which I will point out in Clavin's LALD review some day when I have time.
@jenniferschillig3768

It's the same with Dr. No...the James Bond Theme is playing all the time, but in the exact same arrangement. It's as if Bond's walking around with a tape player in his pocket playing his own theme music.

I watched allthe bond movies with my brother a few years ago and i remember "From russia with love " distinctly for three things. 1. The Title song is played dureing the end. 2. The train fight scene 3. The weird lack of properly implemented score. Action scenes remained mute and mundane scenes of nothing got the bond theme. It was really bizarre. The first true "BOND" Bond - film was in my opinion "goldfinger".

I wouldn’t call this best of the film series, but it is certainly a favourite of mine. I’ve always loved Cold War Spy Thrillers and if I had to pick a favourite era of Bond, I’d probably pick out the sixties as my favourite, I don’t really think there was a BAD film from Sixties Bond, per say, each of them from Dr No to On Her Majesty’s Secret Service are classics for me, to be honest. Anyway, good film.

There is one thing that always perturbed me in this movie! And that is when Bond actually meets Tania, he leaves his bath running! I always wondered if it overflows or he gets back into his room in time to turn it off after having screwed her! Mind you, she does say she’ll tell him what she thinks of him in the morning so I guess he does stay with her all night and supposedly someone else comes into his room to turn the bath off!

Brilliant review of my second favourite Bond film. Here's an interesting fact: 'Kleb' is the russian for bread. I'm not sure if Flemming knew this. It's always struck me as rather odd. Anyhow, she is a brilliant character and one of the most creepy villains in the series. I have to disagree with what you said about Kronsteen being creepy- I, personally, have always found him rather attractive. I mean… how can you NOT find a face like that attractive?

The reason for the dialogue about the 13th/14th is because Bond told Tania the 14th (still not trusting her and thinking it might be a trap). But the plan all along is to go the day earlier when anyone Tania tipped off would not be expecting it.

I am Roger Moore bond fan as I grew up watching his films. But with so many films as a kid you only know them by certain characters or set pieces. Like the one with the car on the train line or with the 2CV or from this one the woman with the knife shoes. Rosa Klebb is very memorable as a bond villian. I do like Connery bonds but as a kid growing up Moore's humour filled BIG films are easier to understand.
