I know this video is 4 years old Calvin but it just popped up in my recommended and turns out I hadn't seen it before. Weird story. My first exposure to this film was in my science class when I was like 13. The teacher played the robbery scene from the first part of the movie as gave us a test based on the scene. I said to myself "that's James Bond, oh cool". I then watched the movie in full not long after and, even at the age of 13, could really appreciate what a great journey this movie took me on. One of my favourite Brosnan performances outside of Bond (maybe Dante's Peak) and just a great movie in general.

A fun list overall, but I really loved your passionate defense of Christmas Jones/Denise Richards. So many people just completely write her off as some hot bimbo model who can't act that ruins their James Bond film, and I will admit before watching this she basically at the bottom of my own personal ranking, but I think you're literally the only person I've ever seen make one of these lists that's ever had some empathy for Denise's situation to the point I was actually taken aback and had to reevaluate what I'd thought about her. It made me think, and that's all I want from videos like these.

Octopussy always in my top ten. I love the opening pre title. It has some of my favorite Bond momments. Bond matching wits with villain over backgammon, and in Sotheby’s auction house. Both tense momments. I love Bond sliding down bannister taking out bad guys. Magda’s spiral down off balcony. The film plays to Moores age. Octopussy more fit for Moores age. The fight in Octopussy island plays well with Moores age. The Buzzsaw a memorable villain gadget. Louis Jordan’s Kahn is a great villain, to match Moores Bond. Great story, down to earth villain scheme. My only negative, the Tarzan yell.

Easily the most entertaining Moore Bond film. It also has my second favourite moment in the entire Bond saga, second only to the moment in Thunderball where Bond steals the grape: Bond in a gorilla suit checking his watch!

I just finished replaying the PS2 version for the first time since it was released, and it was WAY better than I remembered it to be. Also it turns out that I am way worse at playing it than when I was a kid, although at least I did beat Equinox (which I could not do back then).

My review hasn’t changed since I’ve seen it in the movie theater in the early 80s… Again, it’s just a wonderful bond film that you can just put on an escape… It took me a couple of filings to know which egg was which… It also took me a couple of viewings to figure out the switch of the train cars with the gold versus the nuclear bomb

I re-cut Octopus to remove the schtick and increase the pace towards the end. I took out all the "peeping Tom" bits. About 150 seconds removed, but some scenes had to be reordered and have material transplanted in to make the narrative run correctly. The result was a film that could have come after From Russia with Love. And to answer your obvious question: no, it's mine, all mine (bwa ha ha). I intended to recut Moonraker, but I have never got round to it.

Brilliant. Young Calvin returns once again. Ages since we've had a MEANWHILE!!!. That's still hilarious now. Agree with mostly what he says. Roger Moore's performance as Bond totally suits this film, and I still always use the line"it's all in the wrist" where I can. It's the way he delivers it. Your face as well when he's having to blast through the plot, because of KZbin's running time back then. Priceless. Keep young Calvin coming. Really look forward to them. Still waiting for him to do OHMSS. Would be nice to do, as I read recently that George Lazenby isn't going to do anymore public appearances, or autograph signings. Might be an appropriate time to do it.

Past/Shaggy Calvin thought of FYEO as bland, with nothing stand-out in it? Well, Present-Calvin, I don't recall any super-recent takes you have on MY favorite Moore Bond film. But maybe we're not so different, you and I. You like your silliness with a touch of Cold War gravity, I prefer my Cold War gravity with a touch of silliness. I enjoy all of Moore's Bond films, and while Octopussy is, and always has been, my least favorite, I will take it over all but the very best of Connery/Dalton/Brosnan/Craig. NOT over OHMSS. That film is sainted. The "Worst" Moore is still a good time. Hence why he's my favorite Bond. Even if Lazenby is TECHNICALLY my favorite if you go by quality over everything else. But seven fun-to-wonderful films still beat one legendary one. Moore was remarkably consistent. P.S. NSNA IS an "arse-wipe" of a Bond film. It's still THE worst of all arguably-canon films. And I still respect 1967 Casino Royale more, for at least not giving a $#!+ and just being so, SO of its time that it's iconic. NSNA is absolutely worthless.

that justin beiber haircut... anyway bond being a clown in that movie was just a literal statement of the roger moore era.

Is it ever explained in the movie why 009 is dressed as a clown? Was he investigating the jewel smuggling and Octopussy’s Circus in East Germany? Wouldn’t M have that information, and wouldn’t he pass it on to Bond before he went to India? And what were the odds that 007 happened to dress in the exact same clown outfit as 009?

Calvin made a good point that there isn't that many which are totally divorced as they usually do link in with the rest of the film [even if for Thunderball it's just the events being mentioned in the Spectre meeting].

Mission Impossible Rouge Nation felt like a bit of a throwback to that as while the opening plane stunt has some dialogue linking it to the rest of the film it's fairly stand alone [to the extent it was going to be a mid-credits scene at one point!].

Always great to re-watch these old reviews, I remember them quite well from back in the day. I for one have also always loved Octopussy, it is not my favourite from the Roger Moore era which is Moonraker but it's such damn good fun. It probably ranks amongst the top five of Bond films I'v seen the most and it never seems to bore me in the least.

Funny story about the opening: I was probably 5 years old and just caught the bit with the clown running from the assassins before being murdered. I was certain I had accidentally watched the opening of some gruesome slasher flick. It was probably 20 years later that I finally saw Octopussy and realized it was the same scene that scared me when I was 5. I got a good laugh from the idea that my younger self saw James Bond and imagined it was Halloween or something.

Addressing your cringe is what those of us in the spiritual community refer to as shadow work. It's a bitter pill that has lasting growth benefits. As for the movie Octopussy, I always love getting to this one in my marathons. It really should have been Moore's final picture. It has all the signs of a an actor giving his last great performance to the role while keeping a smile on his face.

Given Roger quite openly said 'View' was one too many [and filming seemed to be a bit bad tempered given he didn't get on with Grace Jones or Tanya Roberts] I do wish he had quit while he was ahead with Octopussy.

Octopussy is my 2nd favourite Bond film after FYEO. I just absolutely adore it. Roger is my favourite Bond and this is my favourite performance from him. I think he’s at his most comfortable and funniest in this film. I also love his serious moments as well. Octopussy is my favourite Bond girl. Maud Adam’s is just fantastic. Her chemistry with Moore is excellent. Louis Jordan as Kamal Khan I think absolutely steals the movie. He is definitely my favourite Bond villain. I love his charm and line delivery. Steven Berkoff is good as General Orlov although I do think he’s underused and I don’t find him as interesting as Kamal. However I can’t deny he is very entertaining to watch because of how hammy and over the top he is. Overall a fantastic film.
