This is the best version of Amazing Grace I've ever heard. John Newton, the author of the hymn, had been a slave trader before his conversion to Christ. He then became an important abolitionist. I think he'd be blown away by this version of his song. Totally unreal to see Tim Armstrong playing on this, with The Interrupters. And Calypso Rose! Man, she gives me goosebumps. So glad I stumbled on this during Holy Week.

I am amazed. I love Rancid's music. Most bands... I like about 50% or less of their songs; with Rancid, it's more like 90%. I generally detest music that comes from my area (the Caribbean) but Tim Armstrong has chosen to love some of our music. How ironic! I appreciate that Calypso Rose is singing for the Glory of God now. The Interrupters rock too! This was nice.

Amazing Grace was written by John Newton who had himself been a slave trader before he was converted by Jesus Christ and became an Anglican priest. What a powerful story of redemption!
@josephopie3484 жыл бұрын
I was thinking that myself as I listened to the intro. People seam to be putting too much into skin color and not really realizing we are all humans that struggle with the sins of the flesh. I personally love this song and have since I first heard it as a young man.
@kevinconnor60353 жыл бұрын
@@josephopie348 I think a song like this will speak to whatever struggle the listener or performer identifies with. For this woman, it's about the struggle of her ancestors as slaves, and maybe examining the fact that she has her Caribbean heritage, of which she seems to be proud, only because her ancestors were brought over as slaves. For many people, I'm sure slavery doesn't come to mind at all when listening to this. But that's the beauty of a great song. It can mean something different to everyone, but still resonate.

All of which were picked up in Jamaica from US and Cuban radio broadcasts ..on clear nights. Around 1966..Ska slowed down its beats and the slowed down Ska (also put a bit less emphasis on percussion) in transitioned into Rocksteady - still considered Ska but was waning in Favor of ...a new name - Rocksteady.
