National Lampoon was a spinoff of the Harvard Lampoon, an undergraduate humor publication founded in 1876 by seven undergraduates at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. National Lampoon was an American humor magazine that ran from 1970 to 1998. They also did comedy albums and stage shows that included comedy stars John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Brian Doyle Murray, Harold Ramis, and Richard Belzer before they formed a movie production company. One of the founders of the National Lampoon and former Harvard Lampoon editor was Douglas Kenney, he is the nerd guy in the movie who says "what the hell we supposed do ya moron". He went on to write, produce, and perform in the influential comedies Animal House and Caddyshack before his sudden death at the age of 33.

This movie led to a lot of food fights in college cafeterias as well as toga parties. Don't ask how I know. This was filmed at the University of Oregon, in the town where I live. Some of the buildings are still there, although the animal house was torn down long ago. You can still see the sorority where the ladder was placed, and the cafeteria where the food fight happened is still there, although now it is filled with Starbucks and Chipotle type places. The story goes that every single college that was asked to allow filming rejected the offer except for the University of Oregon for one simple reason. The U of O was the only college that didn't read the script.

The "I'm only thirteen" line has an interesting story. The script had her saying "I'm only sixteen", but Landis was afraid the MPAA would order the line cut. So he filmed two versions of the scene, one with thirteen and one with sixteen. The idea was when the censors freaked out over thirteen, they could offer sixteen as an alternative ("Okay, that's not so bad..."). Except the MPAA let thirteen pass without comment.

I was thrilled to see you had reacted to this, and had to click right away. I was in college when this came out, not in a frat. Back then they didn't hold back making movies. This is pretty much the granddad of the late 70s-early 80s outrageous and raunchy comedies. When I encounter a real catastrophe at work, I refer to it as "dead horse in the dean's office" event. Even used a screenshot of Bluto's perfect "holy shit" moment on a picture of the catastrophe. By the way, that scene on the stairs with the guitar is so iconic that they repeated it in an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. I always felt this was a very well balanced ensemble story, everyone contributing in some way proportional to their place. How much would we have missed if we only followed Larry and Kent, after all? Loved your reaction, practically falling out of your chairs laughing. I've done that myself in the best of times. Edit: The whole premise of this movie was also parodied in Futurama where they had a robot fraternity at Mars University.

I used to work at a bar called the Harvester in Eugene right across Franklin Avenue (Hwy 99) from the University of Oregon when they were filming this movie. Some of the cast would stop in frequently after work.

ROTC (college military training) used to be mandatory nationwide for men. Even though this takes place before Vietnam, you can imagine how popular that fact would have been in 1978. Wasn't there myself, but boy have I heard some strong opinions from that generation.

National Lampoon started as a magazine at a college. The people who were part of it went on to be apart of the original SNL cast. Animal House was the first of many movies they made together.

The college is Harvard. The Harvard Lampoon is the longest running humor publication EVER. It was started in 1876. Some of its former staff from the 1960's started the "National Lampoon". The Harvard Lampoon is still being published.

Donald Sutherland was offered $50,000 for two days work or 2% of the movies gross revenue. Sutherland thought the movie would flop so he took the $50K had he taken the 2% it would have paid him 14 Million. After Sutherland John Belushi and Neidermeyer's horse, Junior were the highest paid each received $40,000.

The “whiskey” that Belushi drank, was actually tea. The producers had to switch it, just so that he would be sober the entire time. Because he was the animal house of the animal house in Animal House.

Loving this watchlaong with you two already(!) 😂 Interesting part of seeing earlier ensemble flicks like this one, The Right Stuff, The Big Chill, while growing up is seeing the cast getting older in other roles... for starters, the biker in the beginning going up the stairs... is the straight-laced main cop in My Cousin Vinny...!

@@VOTOG-ic6hm Yeah, I've felt there should be a cusp generation between Boomers and Gen X (my cohort) because that's always seemed to be a long stretch. It's the same as saying a baby born today is in the same generation as a current high school senior (who is also biologically old enough to be the baby's parent) 🤔 My thought is that if someone doesn't have clear memories of life in the 1950s, they aren't really old enough to be a Boomer.

John Vernon (born Adolphus Raymondus Vernon Agopsowicz in Zehner, Saskatchewan) played the villainous Dean Vernon Wormer. Well known as a really nice guy, he got steady work in Hollywood playing villains. In his native Canada, he was more famous for playing a medical detective in the popular series Wojeck. A thorough professional, he could effortlessly play anything from a major Shakespeare role to broad farce, or western action roles.

1. Donald Sutherland was so convinced of the movie's lack of potential that, when offered a percent of the gross or a flat fee of $75,000 for his three days' work, he took the upfront payment. Had he taken the gross percentage, he would have been worth an additional $3-4 million. He also said he had the most fun in this film than anything else he's ever done. 2. Landis wanted Dan Ackroyd to play D Day/Bruce McGill got the part. Lorne Michaels of Saturday Night Live fame threatened to fire him if he took the part. 3. "Charming guy" with the guitar that gets smashed by Bluto is Steven Bishop a real musician at the time who had just put out his one hit wonder "On and on". 4. John Belushi stayed in a separate motel to keep him away from the drinking and drugs the other Delta cast members were participating in. 5. Douglas Kenny was part of the National Lampoon's writing team. He got the part of Stork so he could be in the movie. 6. Had Belushi not been available to play Bluto Meatloaf would have taken his place. 7. The Jack Daniels Bluto chugged was iced tea. 9. John Vernon/Dean Wormer😇 had the best pipes and there couldn't have been a better choice than to cast him. NOTE: He also played the Mayor in "Dirty Harry". 10. Trombones aren't placed in the front of the marching band (because it changes the dynamic of the unit It was put in for creative purposes. 11. This was a movie that if you watched it in the theater, it's likely you had to see it at least twice because the follow-on stuff is often covered up by other's laughter. Not to mention the little items slipped in. 12. Luckily, I was working in a movie theater when this was released.😎 13. It's impossible to NOT unsee the old guy sitting on the bleacher making weird faces. 14. James Widdoes/Hoover recently directed many "Two and a half men" episodes. 15. Check out "Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke". It also came out in 1978.
