I sold these cars back in the day at a Chevy Store in Milwaukee. This film looks a lot like one of the training films that we got from Chevy to learn about the new products that were up and coming. Management would set up a large film projector in a conference room and this would be out first intro of a new product. The projector made so much noise, you had trouble hearing the flick. But the message came across, and we sold 'em. One at a time.

This promotional film was created for the annual summer preview conference (dealer introduction) attended by the owners of Chevrolet franchises. Likely, it was also shown later at each Chevrolet franchise to the sales team. The early introduction 1965 Ford Mustang really caught General Motors off guard... which the Chevrolet Division at the time trying to wring out as many compact sporty car sales as possible with the Corvair Monza/Corsa coupes and convertibles. Thus, a quick management decision was made immediately after the April 1964 introduction of the Mustang to engineer the Camaro (and its derivative the Pontiac Firebird which debuted as a 1967 1/2 model). The first generation Mustang had a narrower straight line linear look... but the first generation Camaro was styled to have a wider rounded look on its bodysides (somewhat muted with the 1969 facelift). Dave Holls is better known as a prominent designer of the iconic 1959 Cadillac.

IMHO, the Camaro is a Corvair design reboot. It shares many styling queues from the second generation Corvair, inside and out, but changed and adapted enough to have its own identity and front engine layout. If the Corvair's reputation hadn't been so sullied by 1966, I can't help but think the Corvair name may have succeeded to the new Panther/Camaro. Many styling queues are carried over from the Corvair. Interesting side note, ever notice the Camaro never had the very popular round taillights until 1970? That was the first year there was no Corvair in the line-up with round taillights. Many styling similarities can be found between the 2nd generation Corvair and 1st generation Camaro. Personally, in high school, during the mid-seventies, my first gotta have car was a Camaro, but it was the uniqueness and design of the 2nd gen Corvair that actually stole my heart.
