Thank you for opening the discussion on this in a way that is both respectful and with her participation. This is all about respect, and meeting the wife or girlfriend where she is as opposed to where we might want or expect her to be, based on modern western norms The focus on outside appearances (“face”), home and family is very different from “modern” western situations, for the most part If we as foreigners are going to date or marry Khmer women, we need to know and respect their cultural context and do our own part to earn the respect they want to give us

Chbab Srey is a good thing if Chbab Pros is applied too. Our ancestors did not just create Chbab Srey to oppress women, but they also created chbab pros to make sure the family live happily and harmoniously. It cannot be like you always hang out with friends outside, never or little help in the house, but expect your wife to conduct herself just because she is a woman. I think that is wrong. Anyway, not everything in chbab srey is relevant to today society.

Girls in the villages were expected to drop out of school by their mid-teens, get a menial job, marry, have children and be the housekeeper. It traps them in poverty and limits their choices in life. Thankfully, there are young women taking a leading role in pushing change for Cambodia.

Im Cambodian American living in Long Beach, Cali. Chbab srey and chbab pros we still follow in my family but some minor changes and fits to our modern day life. I myself do not think it’s entirely bad. Theres some family still follow rules here in America in Cambodian family.

KHmer women should make meaningful contributions to the economy and defending the motherland whether in supporting role or whatever, not just stay home and cook and raise the family. The rules do not work in modern society. I am totally against the rules. The nations needs both sexes to be productive.

@@dengjek Chbab Srey is a way Cambodian men control Cambodian women. Why don't we have Chbab Pros? I have seen it with own eyes and live it. In theory, it has good purpose but in reality, many Cambodian women get the short end of the stick.

In general I get that he's saying "respect is important" and I agree, it is important to respect ourselves, and each other. But when he says the "western woke movement" is getting out of hand, I have to wonder what "woke" means to him. I remember the use of that word began in America as a way to say "get involved, it matters". And even by dictionary terms - Merriam webster defines woke as "aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice)". I think nowadays, people use that word as a sort of Dog whistle and way to insult people who are more progressive or activists in the USA. He refers to women who have pink hair as something that's related to woke, or something that's to be ashamed of, and I can promise you that there are many respectful people with all hair colors who just enjoy expressing themselves through their style. Belief systems like "Chbab Srey" can be helpful, absolutely. I'm just trying to say that being respectful and having an opinion or strong belief do not have to be mutually exclusive. Dressing, looking, or sounding differently don't have to mean you are disrespectful either. I love watching KZbinrs who travel and showcase different cultures for that exact reason. - from a former subscriber

I was today years old when I learned that my mom taught me a lot of these chbab srey points. Let me tell ya, I broke a lot of these rules because they're really ridiculous. 😅 I talk loudly and laugh loudly. I also walk really loudly. If doing any of these makes me a bad woman, then so be it. At the end of the day, I know I'm a really good person and I'm very good to my boyfriend. That's just my nature. I know a Khmer woman who talks very softly but gossips about others. I guess she follows one of the rules but still manages to be bad. So, yeah, I think the rules are a bit ridiculous even for the time they were created.

I really don't know thoroughly what "chbab srey" is but what I think it is that it's probably coming from a man mansplaining what and how "women should be" Lol! I think it should be the elder women setting the blueprint and using common sense of being the role model of what a woman should be. Most importantly should be fitting for the modern age.

Any society should have and maintain the code of conducts for men and women. These code of conducts determine how men and women should behave. In Western societies, they fought off these women’s code of conducts and they wanted to be equal to men. I think the gender’s code of conducts is good in a way if you can maintain it. But a lot of people don’t believe in it anymore. Now a day, it’s all confusing now. Men can be women, women can be men, or both. Men love men, women love women, or both. This is not what God created human to be like. But anyway, this is what happen when no one believes in the gender’s code of conducts. Everything is a mess now.
