Exams are over and I can record videos again, so please enjoy a brief look at some of the things in my room while I talk about some of the events that have happened/are happening this term.

I spend a lot more time working at uni than I did at school. 9am lectures six days a week, Monday-Saturday, and most days I work until I go to bed. I get my exam results on the 1st July, so pretty soon. I'll upload a video once I get them. :)
@huckiDazalem11 жыл бұрын
wow, that's a lot of work! Good luck for your results! And btw, thanks for making the OCR Computing revision book! I had to self-teach the course, and it helped so much!

Thank you. :D If there is interest then I'd love to make a similar book for the first two units. My two problems are lack of time and the fact that OCR will probably change the spec soon. But yes, I do plan to do it eventually.

Hi Jake Wright, nice to share your computer science student room tour with us here. Not only you, who is suffered with 150 pages handouts per day. I have to read almost 500 pages in one subject for 4 days before you go trough the examen in friday. That's the schedule that we must do every single week with different subject as long as 'i am student of Master Informatics Engineering'. Keep up the good work

Great video! My dream is to study in Cambridge one day!
@jakewrightnet11 жыл бұрын
No, I don't have a scholarship or anything, I'm paying £9000/year (with a student loan). I just applied through UCAS in the same way as I applied to other universities. Then got an interview followed by an offer. The Cambridge website has all of the details regarding the application process but it's the same as all other unis if you live in the UK and fairly straightforward otherwise.

I liked looking at the difference between your uni and mine, I've only studied in Scotland, I'm now a teacher after doing a one year PGDE, I hope to be a lecturer eventually

Oh cool! No, Queens' didn't make me do STEP, which I'm glad about, seems pretty tough. Good luck with your application!

Will do! My school are going to attempt to teach the course from next year after seeing me do it, so I'll definitely recommend they buy your book! Do you have any plans to make books for unit 1 or 2?
@jakewrightnet10 жыл бұрын
Ben Bray, I applied to Queens'. Open applications can be good if you don't know which college to apply to, but there were some colleges that I didn't want to end up at so I didn't want to take the risk. (It wouldn't let me reply to your comment properly.)

Ye, that's what I've heard. Would you say you spend more or less time a day working than you did when at school (including lessons at school and lectures at uni)? When do you get your results for your exams btw?

I went on a tour at Queen's a few months ago, I didn't realise you were there! I'm applying to Cambridge for Comp Sci too. Did you have to do STEP?
@erossy310 жыл бұрын
What did you get at GCSE? Great video :)
@huckiDazalem11 жыл бұрын
As a hopeful Comp Sci student, I was wondering, is the course interesting and up to date? When comparing it to UCL, I found that the course was a lot less modern, and more hardware based. Did you find that, or has it been a great course?

Thanks! Oh wow, I'm so glad it helped you. If you know anybody else doing the course it would be a great help if you recommended it to them! :D
@jakewrightnet11 жыл бұрын
Honestly, the course is really out of date. Our lecture notes for the operating systems course mentions that "Longhorn" will be coming soon. It's still a good course, but with a hell of a lot of work. That's true for most Cambridge courses though, not just CompSci.

I know this is a slightly bizarre question, but I was wondering which building in Queens' this room was in? I'm working out where the best place will be to stay as a fresher next year and freaking the crap out! (Promise I'm not a stalker...) xx
@jakewrightnet10 жыл бұрын
Haha no that's not weird, I would have loved to have seen more of the rooms before I chose mine. This was DD staircase in Cripps. Like 80-90% (maybe) of freshers live in Cripps in first year.
@huckiDazalem11 жыл бұрын
Ye, you're probably right. The courses never last more than a few years. Btw, I'd love to work with you on developing a game or something like that sometime soon!

I know this is late... but what was the storage space like in your room? did you have a wardrobe and drawers to put clothes in? I'm applying to cam this year but didn't get a chance to look at all the accommodation :/

depends on the building, cripps in queens' has a pretty good amount of storage space, wardrobe and loads of drawers

Jake, is it necessary to know more than a language to be qualified into Cambridge? If so, how many languages you need to learn in order to meet the conditions required?
@Bobdowntheroadshow8 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to learn any new languages, just having English as your only language should be fine. But that may vary dependant on the subjects you choose.

'Sir Isaac Newton built the Mathematical bridge with no screws, by using the angles to make it stable' (or something I'm only Year 9) 'the students then took it apart and tried to rebuild it with no screws but they were apparently not clever enough to do it so they used screws' or that's what they told me when I went punting....

waaaaiiittt, how much slides for one exam? because what you just showed us is basic! that we learn in middle school ! (for the rest of the world that would be 9th grade if you start your education at age 7 starting 1st grade)
@elliephantz10 жыл бұрын
Oh of course. You learn university stage probability in Middle school. I totally believe you. I also hope you understand my sarcasm.
@micinum10 жыл бұрын
Now I see why transfer students from Macedonia say its much easier abroad 😀 I had a friend that was a big fail in middle school here in Macedonia, they moved in Australia and got into some university in Perth for computer science, he finished top of his class there and saying its easy! This is the same guy that almost failed a year in middle school...So no, it is not hard what you learn. Here in Skopje we have 3 foreign universities all American ones. Rich people go there that have no brains. After finishing the uni they cant get a job because they are from 'private' not a state university. The most stupid people get a diploma there. I know a lot of people that have gone to the US and UK as transfer students and they never come back...they finish the courses with ease and get a job..not one of the ones I know have returned to work here
@micinum10 жыл бұрын
One other thing, what you learn is not hard remember there are places in the world where people live in shit holes and learn much harder things than this. They dont have money and must work at night just to pay rent and bills.
@micinum10 жыл бұрын
If you want I can send you the slides from one of the subjects from my first year..you tell me if what you learn is hard then
