No government, in my opinion, has the right to seize the assets of another nation. This is not only unethical but shows the arrogance and ignorance of any nation that engages in this type of practice.

Alexander Mercouris recently pointed out the difference in the US and Russian economies in that Russia is a natural resources/manufacturing economy with a 15% debt to GDP ratio vs the US financial economy with a 130% debt to GDP ratio who’s main export is the US$ with no manufacturing base, which doesn’t allow for a war footing. The short term Wallstreet mindset doesn’t allow for a long term oriented built up of weapons production, which the Russian economic model does.

Government could spend $10T per year for twenty-years, they can't build a semiconductor industry. They aren't capable. For a nation built on free-markets, it's astonishing how little leadership/gov't values free-markets. Problem with commodities-based currency is that currency has to grow/shrink with economy. Purpose of Fed was to match currency supply to economic growth. Unfortunately, congress/president spent/wasted as much as they could order Fed to print under a preposterous MMTheory. Debt-system would've been well-positioned to match currency-supply to economy-size had congress shown self-control. (more...) Commodity-based currency is much worse however. Because commodity supply is mostly independent of economy-size. Yes, when economies grow, demand creates more oil, but they are not well matched. First, the supply is large, but finite. There's a huge delay between rising and falling demand and supply's response. Gold is even worse. Second, wars, natural disasters and corruption impede commodity flow in opposite and unpredictable directions. Currencies simply can't be based on such vagaries. Third, Owners of commodities unjustly benefit from economic-growth. Example: 330M people work their butts-off to build inventions, factories, roads and bridges, yet it's the commodity owner that reaps the benefit without lifting a finger. If a population doubles the value of an economy, the commodity-owner's value likewise doubles for no apparent reason. By leaving gold uninvested in his vault, the commodity-owner's dead-asset reaps the unearned benefit of growing in value. This perverted incentive will distort markets and exacerbate disparities. One can certainly understand commodity-holder's incentive to design a commodity-based system, but it will cause nothing but wars and despair.

Great interview. Luke is so insightful. There's a fair chance IMO that US planners are going to have a go at shutting down global demand before doing all the other things Luke says they should be doing. US planners would probably like to recover lost foreign treasury buyers; and they will also want to create conditions for a return to the status quo, pre reserves confiscation and SWIFT sanctions. Such conditions could be created for the EM BRIC nations to reluctantly go for $.yield in a world with few other choices. The counter to that is to have a gold price independent of the Comex's price setting function.

I watched this when it came out. What a difference a year makes. Luke Gromen mentions one option which seemed a distant possibility last year for charting a path to recovery from higher interest rates and massive deficit spending, nuclear fusion for cheap clean energy. In may of 2024 the French government tested a reactors capacity to produce fusion energy by super heating plasma enclosed in tungsten walls. Due to tungstens high melt temperature they were able to heat the Plasma to 50 million degrees for six minutes. The South Koreans are also testing nuclear fusion using plasma and tungsten. The economic and social benefits of further development for nuclear fusion in the not to distant future could easily be a global panacea.

The world is shifting from reserving treasuries to reserving gold. But this transition takes years. Buying gold that pays no dividends and is worth only what one will pay for it, only long term plans to buy and hold gold work for a guys children as an inheritance but not really for the guy that needs to put meat on the table. This idea the military industrial complex reneging on Russia to dampen the demand for treasuries so the US will go back to producing to facilitate US’a defense capabilities … just seems a stretch, associating a noble purpose to Russian hating.

Something is missing in this conversation. The United States wants to rebuild its infrastructure and yet it is insolvent. That is what you call a paradox you have not addressed the subject of the paradox. If the US economy deflates tax receipts will go with it. How will the banks generate the liquidity and the will to lend? Lending will be necessary to rebuild the infrastructure and to support the purchase of risk assets such as construction interests. There is no mechanism for an economic boom only an involuntary death spiral, the FED will be impotent. Whomever has any cash and or gold remaining are the only ones capable of restarting this insanity and of course will be the owners of everything. Only US currency in circulation and I can't underscore in circulation enough will be acceptable tender. No one accepts Bitcoin in collapsed economies. Maybe constitutional silver in small enough denominations will also be acceptable, and that's it.😅 Have you ever tried to buy a cup of coffee in Argentina with a Bitcoin... Or a 400 kilo bar of gold?ha! Personally I like the idea of repricing gold at 28,000 dollars and maybe owning some streaming gold mining companies for the future. cannot build manufacturing therefore they are impotent. Gold will be liquidated to support margin calls until it is eviscerated. Only those who have no liabilities remaining and still possess cash and gold will have anything worth bordering for after a severe shortage of food water and shelter. So it better be in a unmarked hole in your backyard. That is what happens in a depression. The rich, the ones with a very large hole in their backyard are the only ones who can restart this insanity.
