In Camden there is 100% charity, churches give away free food, clothes, some help with temporary shelter and even small amounts of money, but in the end what problems are they solving? None, they only exacerbate the problems, while they point at themselves and say look at how wonderful we are! These people are salvageable individuals, but they have serious problems, addictions to drugs and/or alcohol, they are illiterate or only semi-illiterate, and have no skills so they can't get a job even if they wanted one. These are the root problems we need to address. True while we do that, they still need help to survive, but nothing but give aways are not the answer. We need to help them rebuild their lives, and make these difficult choices to do so. As long as someone is there giving away free food and clothes, helping them over the rough patches, they don't need to turn their lives around. They have to be made to understand they will have to put out some effort and make a positive change in their own lives, someone cannot do it all for them. Unfortunately, the ones that are handing out all the charity don't want to hear this, because this is not an easy task, it's easier to just hand out the free stuff, and then forget about them until tomorrow. In the end, it's the ones they are supposedly helping, that really suffer.

Some of the last people that are not slaves to consumerism and truly living free. I wouldn't want to be there in the winter with snow on the ground.

The clear dig at "pursuit of happiness" in the beginning is total bullshit. Yes some people start off with more than others, but in this country you always have room to improve yourself. Ultimately the choices are yours. It's not easy. It takes work. Stop using drugs, yes it's hard. Develop a skill, yes it's hard. There are so many people out there who are willing to help you. Stop blaming others. Stop waiting for someone else to fix your problems. And to the person who said others ate all the pie, so what. Learn how to bake your own pie.
