Having seen camel spider up close I can tell you the four front saws connected to its mouth are terrifying. They are massive for the size of its head. It will grind anything that fits in that space.

I had one as a pet, named him Steve. Found him in my house, though smaller and light brown. I thought it was weird looking since it seemed to have 10 legs, but they actually have 8 legs and 2 giant feelers. They are very handy with them, as you can see here, and I got to watch Steve skillfully and quickly "rearrange" his home when he felt like it. Very cool. Also known as Wind Scorpions, Camel Spiders, and Sun Spiders, Solpugids are like cross of spider and scorpion and technically aren't either. They are very fast and hunt at night. I would put crickets I caught into Steve's cage and before I could reach my bed after shutting off the lights I could hear him crunching on the crickets. He was so fast. They also, I've read, have one of the strongest bites proportionate to their size. But don't be afraid of the ones found in homes. Those ones, like Steve, eat bugs and even other spiders! So they are actually quite helpful. I'm unfamiliar with the bigger ones from the desert. Steve was a fun little guy to keep, observe, and learn from. I caught Steve as an adult and he lived well past a year, went peacefully. They only have about one year about so assume he made it to old age. I know they aren't meant be pets, but having never seen or heard of them before I saw Steve scitter across my livingfloor, I was just too fascinated.

This is certainly unexpected and impressive. The species of ant makes a big difference. I think some ant species would be too overwhelming. Yes, the cocoon and pupa of this species is full of protein, as they are fed almost all the protein collected by the colony so that they can grow faster. The adults of this species don't eat much protein at all.

You sure? Looks a lot like the fly massacres many female Solifugae do in labs, prior to egg laying/guarding. They also tend to use holes from other bugs to dig out their burrows for said egg laying...sooo I think that may be your behavioral pattern. But I'm not a bug scientist.

This animal is properly known as a solifuge. It’s a distant cousin to spiders and scorpions. Note their gigantic paired jaws, which apparently are capable of mowing down a colony of ants.
