Far from day, far from night, Out of time, out of sight, In between earth and sea, We shall fly; follow me. Dry the rain, warm the snow; Where the winds never go Follow me, follow me, follow me To a cave by a sapphire shore Where we'll walk through an emerald door, And for thousands of breathless evermores my life you shall be. Only you, only I, World farewell, world goodbye. To our home 'neath the sea We shall fly; follow me. Follow me, follow me, follow me.

“Breathless” is omitted in this version and a sharp inhalation of breath is substituted after “evermore”

@howen77 yes, it was, it was filmed at the wintergarden theatre and went on tour, where I saw when it came to Buffalo. that light and smoke trick was fantastic. if you pause it, you will see James Valentine simply lay down and become part of the set and blend in. Simple technique, but so effective. and when I saw it in person - it blew my mind.

Does anyone think that the same song might work for other versions of the story, for instance ones where she actually loves him? Just wondering. Until now I have usually always thought of this song as a deliberate (and probably evil) enchantment or curse. But just a few moments ago, Vera Chapman's book The Enchantresses (with the Vivian/Nimue who loves Merlin) flew into my mind...and now I could possibly somewhat imagining her singing this song. It would have to be under somewhat different circumstances, however.

"Only you, only I. World farewell, world goodbye." That actually sounds sort of good. If it was at or near the end of your earthly life anyway, and if the right person were singing it. 😍

Vera Chapman's version (which is obviously a little different) says that Vivian/Nimue was his wife who died before him...and then something about she was always calling from Broceliande (the forest of) for him to join her. Was this what she sang when she was calling? 🌟🤩⭐🌠💫 I could sort of see that as a possibility. ^____^

A lot of the historical accounts of Nimue in the legends paint her as a chaotic neutral. She helps Arthur to greatness. But she also wants sex and power, so she steals Merlin and traps him in a tree. She causes Arthur’s rise to power and downfall, not out of malice but just her whim. Standard medieval enchantress.

It all depends on what version of the story you read. In some versions Nimue truly does fall deeply in love with Merlin after becoming his apprentice. In other versions, she seduces him in order to learn his magic and then traps him in a cave forever. She’s truly a mysterious character with lots of layers.

Somehow this is also beginning to remind me of the song "Camelot" from Camelot. Only slightly different. Nimue's version: There *is no* rain, wind or snow. Arthur's version: Well, there *is* actually, but it can only fall or blow at the exact right perfect time of year for it, specifically intended for it. Camelot. The weather show. ^____^

Susan A. I firmly believe it was an intentional or inspired alteration... the sharp intake of breath WAS the indication of “breathlessness”. You are correct regarding the original wording.

Jim Zielinski • That was the authors’ intention. The sung line is omitted to make room for Merlin’s spoken line, without interrupting the flow & intention of a song which has a form that is not automatically transparent. Or was that your joke?

The composers recycled their own melody in the song "Come Back to Me" in "On A Clear Day." Works better in "Camelot."
@Brad4Ellis

Isn’t Camelot the earlier show? And isn’t the composer of CLEAR DAY Burton Lane? I can’t imagine Lerner asking Lane to borrow from Löewe, or vice versa.
