Aw Nijinsky was a genius. I would give anything to go back in time and see him dance this but, for now, at least we have film of Nureyev's interpretation which is fantastic and surely pretty close to Nijinsky's vision. Thanks for uploading.

They used costumes and sets designed from the original Ballet Russe production. It was unforgettable. He was brilliant.

As I recall when this dance was first performed, it was radical and controversial. There was nothing else like it, as if the characters on a Greek urn came to life. I imagine the performance shocked some in the audience and delighted others, simply because it was so different. I also imagine watching Nureyev perform it is to watch Najinski perform it. Thanks for posting this, Pam.

Utterly mesmerizing! Rudi was an original in so many ways, a phenomenon of his time and beyond. How sad was his start in life, born into extreme poverty on a train into the hands of his suster Rosa, in whose arms he would blow his last breath as he died of Aids. And what a triumph he managed to pull off in between!

Stunningly beautiful. Nureyev is weightless and I find myself breathless viewing this. The ending is by far the most erotic scene ever witnessed. In Nureyev's presence, he seemed like an ethereal spirit, almost see-through, not here for a long life but one with a mission - to dance. All genius' Mallarme's poem, Debussy's music, Nijinsky's choreography, Nureyev's movement - a point in time the Great Creator brought together sheer beauty. Thank you PBSimon; love your postings💖💌💞🌹

I must agree with all that this is an excellent ballet. Music, costumes, dance. However the quality of the print is extremely poor. There are many videos on KZbin of this ballet, I've watched them all. Many are better filmed, and some are even better performed. I saw Nureyev dance towards the end of his career, and he was fantastic. A friend, who had written a book on ballet, invited me to a performance , and as a surprise did not telling me Nureyev was performing. Previously I had only seen him dance on television. The ballet is titled, 'Le Spectre de la Rose'. When it was over I turned to my friend and I exclaimed excitedly, "Good Lord this man is better than Nureyev."she laughed quietly, and replied, "It was Nureyev." It simply blew me away.

The “moonwalk” was already a dance move in the 1930s-40s, done by black dancers like the Nicolas brothers, Bill Bailey and Cab Calloway. (He called it “the buzz”.) In the movie “Meet me in St Louis” Margaret O’Brien and Judy Garland also do something very like it too. I wish I could remember the video, but there is at least one somewhere on KZbin that shows the Nicolas bros version.

Yep. Ten years ago, somebody, or something at least inserted the ads in logical breaks in the music, but today’s AI doesn’t appear to have been given an education in logic or good taste… I doubt the executive in charge of such things has either. The damage to the greatest of music is so frightful and deadly that it cannot be overestimated. This ballet, like many others, does prove difficult to understand or follow without knowing the story behind it. This particular ballet was inspired by a poem published in 1876. The poem, Afternoon of a Faun, was written by French author Stéphane Mallarmé. It describes a faun's encounters with a group of young girls as he awakens from his afternoon nap. It is Mallarmé's best-known work and a landmark in the history of symbolism in French literature. It is considered by some to be among the greatest poems in French literature. The ballet, Afternoon of a Faun, was choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky. Set to music by Claude Debussy, both the score and the ballet were inspired by Stéphane Mallarmé's poem. The style of the 12-minute ballet, in which a young faun meets several nymphs and proceeds to flirt with and chase them, was deliberately archaic. In the original scenography designed by Léon Bakst, the dancers were presented as part of a large tableau, a staging reminiscent of an ancient Greek vase painting. They often moved across the stage in profile as if on a bas relief. The ballet was presented in bare feet and rejected classical formalism. It is considered to be one of ballet's first modern productions.
@josephinebennington724712 күн бұрын
It’s about sex…of course. The definition of a faun is of a randy little devil!
@rainydaylady65969 күн бұрын
I remember seeing something on TV once that I guess was a biopic of Nijinsky performing for a group of men. When he got to the part where the faun lays on the piece of cloth he made love to it (that's the only way I can describe it without getting vulgar). It outraged the men and I believe he had to change that part. Unfortunately, that's all I remember of the movie. Is there any truth to that?
@josephinebennington72479 күн бұрын
@ I have no knowledge of that, but I did think that the tail of Nureyev’s faun looked rather like something was on the wrong side….

I love this, but, tbh, his long torso and legs, compared with Nijin., throws me off. I prefer Nijin, his body is better for the choreography, and Nur, I don't know, his height just throws the whole off.. Hard to get used to.
@wardropper9 күн бұрын
I agree. For my taste, it would have been far more effective to have Nureyev in the background, but then perhaps the whole thing was just filmed too close - like for early colour-TV...
@Amy-po3hu7 күн бұрын
@@wardropper Could be. I look at the profiles of the dancers shapes in both films. Nij was really short, so his anatomy is smaller; Nur looks like he's all arms and legs, but only four inches higher. I didn't like the way Nurv comes off as more like a sexual act, versus Nij was move intimate love making. I could watch Nij over and over and over til the day I die. Not Nur., but really, how could Nur successfully interpret a version, when the original was so perfect>
