The best point of this video is the advice of getting the stuff according to what you need as a user. I went through several stages with Nikon, Sony, Lumix, until I really knew what I was doing (not that I'm so sure I know it now), but I've settled for the gear that's leading me further. A still inspiring A7III for photography and saving up for an FX-30, well researched and on the wishlist prio 1. Great video Peter!

Peter, I agree you don't need everything to make something. I have so much gear and it's actually a pain to try to use it all . I have found it's overwhelming and you can actually get nothing done cuz you are spending more time setting up or figuring out how to incorporate it. I have been trying new ways of filming with less gear. Greg

The comment about the bag helping you prioritize what gear is important is spot on. I just got a 8L sling bag, and it became crystal clear what gear I DID NOT need to buy. Ironically, I bought gear (the bag) to understand when not to buy gear :p

Great Content: If you purchase a camera today, would you recommend the sony fx3 or the canon r6 mark ii for doc/vlog content or any other suggestions? I also like to take pictures on occasion. Also, what lens did you use for this video? Thanks, great content

Great advice from someone who went from DHL what 5 or so years back to where you are today. Shows us that with hard work and dedication we can follow our dreams. I’ve heard great things convenience wise on the Sony mic but also heard the sound quality is not great.

When I started making videos on my channel I got a Sony mirrorless camera, lenses, external microphone etc, was good to learn the fundamentals but these days 90% of footage on my channel is shot on iPhone because the setup is so much simpler.

I remember getting into photo/video and I hogslammed right in and snagged an a7 iv with a 24-70 sigma art lens. huge investment (glad i have an awesome job). I still have SO much to learn but I can definitely tell I am getting better at the craft. I cannot agree more about investing in good gear that will LAST. I hate repurchasing equipment more than anything - and more often than not I would have saved money had I just bought the better item initially.

Best Advice I got was to go rent the camera that you want to buy and see if you actually like it. rented a7siii and blackmagic 6k pro and fell in love with the black magic and my computer handled the footage much better didn't have to render or make proxies. If you are thinking of getting a camera rent it first before you spend few thousand dollars on something that might not fit what you need.

Considering what camera body you shoot with is essential. So many just look at "what's the best camera" and want to put down a lot of cash toward that alone without consideration for their actual needs. Esp for video, there are a lot of recent cameras like the FX30 that have 240-280 Mb/s record times, which far easily fill up 4/8TB hard drives compared to an a6500. Don't get me wrong, all these cameras take amazing video and are good for workflows, it just is a very costly setup, especially if you care about preserving your projects. That's why a lot of people who get video focused cameras charge for storage. I get worried with the rise in popularity of these pro level cameras that people are not prepared for some of the storage realities when working with cinema level cameras. The A7SIII and FX30 both are absolute beasts that get amazing images, but they are far from being what everyone needs. Esp for those that want to preserve family memories, which is where having the optimal camera for storage needs is very important. This is why 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm was so popular back for film. 35mm is nice, but very impractical if you want years upon years of photos. Having the ideal camera body for your needs makes you a better videographer/photographer. You will have a far less fun time having to downgrade your settings over picking a camera that works best for your workflow.

Regarding the Peak Design Travel Tripod. It seems it's not a fluid head which makes it more of a "still" tripod I'd think. It seems it would be difficult to track a moving subject (fluid pan/tilt). Is there a travel tripod with fluid head you'd recommend or perhaps a reason you'd recommend against that?
@stowgood
@stowgood Жыл бұрын
I got small manfrotto fluid head to attach to mine, but because of it's size it rarely comes with me. Generally video tripods with fluid heads tend to be much larger. For filming yourself you are not behind the camera to move it anyway. A way round this would be if you also had a gimbal you could mount that then you have a robotic solution that can be controlled wirelessly or even have active track depending on what you get and when you are behind the camera you can just use that too. I often prefer locked off shots now.

Sorry for that, I didn’t try to say something toxic or rude, but after you move to FX6 in your talking head setup, something is changed, and i don’t know what, but it’s downgrade of quality of picture. May be problem with exposure of face, may be you change the light, i don’t know … but now picture is not so pleasant as it was before. Look like face little bit overexposure (but I’m not sure). If its just one my opinion ignore that. But if you also have some kind of this feeling, you need to know, i also see the difference. Thank you so much. Have a great day

Hey Peter,aren't you tired of talking about gadgets all the time? Its because KZbin these days is more of promoting the newest and greatest object which gets views. But frankly speaking it feels most KZbinrs like you sound like news reporters who talk about things that people have heard a 1000 times. It really feels like gadgets take more prominence rather than honing one's craft. You're a good guy,Peter. Hope you and your family are doing good. But I'd like to know your thoughts on these KZbinrs who talk about newest and the greatest tech where they have to say its unbelievable though they know it isn't. Awaiting your response.

I know Peter knows Matty Happoja brother, so I wonder if he could have a word with him about mattys recent videos. I’ve really really taken exception to one particular proclamation he’s been making in a few recent videos. That being that film making is now “easy” because there’s lots of camera/camera gear choice and cameras like the new Sony that has Ai features, so there is “no excuse to make bad videos/films”. That opinion is obviously utter utter nonsense!. As gear does not = making good films, videos, it doesn’t give you technical abilities and knowledge!. Him suggesting such a thing I feel is disingenuous and counter productive!. I go as far as to say it’s dangerous, because say someone who’s been upset felt low and un confident. Finally buys a camera and thinks I’m going to make a short film… doesnt feel good about what they’ve created, uploads it and gets negative comments. Then finds a youtuber like Matty with 2million subscribers going ah film making is “easy with the cameras available in 2023 if your not making good films what ya doing….that could legitimately cause someone to think you know what I am useless, I am pointless I may as well end everything now!. So I really really feel someone needs to give him a good talking to and ask him to clarify he’s statements!. I’ve left a comment about this on mark bones channel too because it’s really annoyed me tbh. It should be as Peter does put across that it’s hard work, determination and practice that achieves goals and creates knowledge and skill. Not buying the latest camera immediately makes you the equivalent of Roger Deakins!. I don’t wish to beat up on Matty but I feel he’s really dropped the ball here!.
