Excellent explanation and examples. I use a cheap 50mm lens because my "set" has some depth to it, with lighting in the background, so I like the blurring back there.

Just to throw out some important info to consider. If you are using a Canon Rebel series camera- you have to multiply 1.6 (crop factor) by the focal length to get the TRUE or actual focal length. Example: Canon EF 10 -18 mm X 1.6 (crop factor) actually = 16-32 mm or 18-55 mm X 1.6(crop factor) actually = 28.8 - 88 mm Thanks! Great video!
@ThinkMediaTV7 жыл бұрын
True. However, that doesn't apply to EF-S lenses correct? The 10-18 EF-S is a crop sensor lens ... vs... the Canon EF 17-40mm. The 17-40 on a crop camera would be multiplied by 1.6... but a native crop sensors lenses should be true to the focal length they promise. Unless I'm wrong...
@ThinkMediaTV7 жыл бұрын
Ok... I think I'm wrong... reading this community.usa.canon.com/t5/Lenses/Does-an-EF-S-lens-focal-length-have-the-1-6-crop-factor/td-p/145516 👊💯
@CheapGeek7 жыл бұрын
Yep, the crop still applies. :) That's where the weird focal range numbers come from...
@CheapGeek7 жыл бұрын
Same also applies to the EOS M series cameras as well. :)
@mikezupancic21827 жыл бұрын
EF-S lenses are still the same focal length and still need to multiply by the crop factor but the actual lens only needs to let light in to cover the smaller sensor. A crop lens put on full frame will actually have part of the image cut off because the sensor is so much larger. (If the lens even works as some will and some wont) crop cameras can use larger lenses meant for full frame as well.

This is excellent. I'm a newbie photographer, not a KZbinr, but the way you portrayed the different focal lengths while providing the side camera shot at the same time is invaluable for everyone. Also, you're an excellent teacher. Your delivery is spot-on, you have excellent emphasis with your voice, and the raw examples of everything like the two cameras that I mentioned above is fantastic. I'm not sure if you follow Jonathan Morrison, but you two have very similar vocal delivery and "we're going to show you raw examples" kinds of approaches to things, which is awesome-it's a compliment to you and him, I think you two could work together. :D Great video overall, thanks for making this!

My tip is to start where you are with what you have, and be creative with it! I have two kit lenses with my Nikon and I just picked up a Nikkor/Nikon 50mm f/1.8 used for $60! So, I'm learning to maximize in the limitations until I can move up a notch or two, I am LOVING the 50mm though! That depth of field effect is intoxicating!
@migranthawker29525 жыл бұрын
Depth of field depends on 2 things, image magnification and aperture size. The focal length is irrelevant.

Additional thoughts for beginners on lenses, with fixed focal lengths: Fixed focal lengths can be really affordable and have a tendency to have sharper glass than the kit lens. But you really can´t zoom with these, which is not as bad as you might think. Also they are usually "faster", so they can let in a lot of more light than other lenses. You say they are "faster", because with more light coming into the camera you can increase the shutter speed in low light and also in general. Possible downside on these lenses: Unlike the kit lenses, they are not stabilized, so to get good footage you either need a slider, a solid in-camera stabilization or just a tripod for static shots. Or (!!) a really steady hand. But they are the most affordable lenses on the market and usually you will always find a great purpose for these lenses! QOTD Answer: I use 3 different lenses right now. An 8 mm fisheye 3.5 for filming skateboarding, the canon 18-55mm kit lens, for skateboarding and other filming and the canon 50 mm 1.8 for photography ( and also for filming). I love the sharpness and the bokeh for this unbelievable price.

Hi Sean! Thanks for the video. It's nice to know the distortion on each lens for each focal length. By the way, same here, my favorite lens so far is Canon 24mm f2.8 (pancake) too. But, most of time I'm not using it for video, just take picture use the lens. From my perspective it's a really great lens, the size is not too big (so flexible to bring it), the focus is fast, and the focal length is enough for anytime I use it.
@tskwared6676 жыл бұрын
At 6:00 the shot is actually less wide than the 24mm point and shoot. The SL2 is a crop sensor, so the 18mm is essentially giving the field of view of a 28mm focal length...

I am filming auto repairs that most of the time are close up where I focus on a small thing also I have a few wide shots of a repair (like repairing rust or cleaning my tire). Should I use 10-24mm lenses for the close up and then switch to a higher rating to 50mm for a full shot of saying a tire cleaning? The subtle differences are so small that an untrained eye won’t even be able to tell

Hi! I am very new to the world of lenses. I just bought a used Panasonic G3. I now wonder what lens can I get to get the best sharpness when I record with the overhead view? It's like 70 cm above where I have my camera. Also I have heard that the lens is what matters most when it comes to a camera. I'm guessing that means sharpness in the picture? I know I need a low aperture in a lens somewhere around a f1.8, plus great image quality, plus affordable, type of lens?
