Nice explanation of the differences of the modes. One very important thing to remember though is a handheld meter typically does ambient light, a camera's meter does reflective light. Ambient is the light that falls on the subject, where the reflective light can vary depending upon the angle you are to your subject.

That is a great point, I don’t have one of the more sophisticated meters that will read incident as well as reflected light, I really appreciate that! I always seem to forget something... 🙄 Thank you for checking in on my video! 😉👍📸

David great info. I usually run in manual but use auto ISO and use the exposure comp to adjust the ISO. Really enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

Thanks David. Never thought about manual mode you don't need to worry about metering

Yeah, it occurred to me when I tried to use exposure compensation and it didn’t do anything, I had an epiphany at that point. 🙄😂📸

Well I searched KZbin for "Highlight weighted metering Z 7" and this is one of the videos that came up. I was doing the search because the manual is pretty cryptic on the subject. So far, most reviewers either don't talk about that mode, or skim through it. I myself have never used it, and it appears I'm not alone. I think it's a centre spot with a bias toward the highlights in that spot. This would protect the highlights from being blown out. In practice, It probably indicates a 2 stop decrease in exposure, based on that small area, but who knows (and Nikon doesn't tell us). Nikon call this "reduction in loss of detail" in their manual, instead of "protecting the highlights," It's protecting the highlights from over-exposure. If not, I hope somebody will correct me.

Use center weighted metering while using filters... damn. Purchased my z6 as a refurb and didn’t think it was a big deal when it was sent without the manual. Love the highlight metering mode for certain light and subjects. Good stuff!

Fortunately, they are easily downloaded from the Nikon website. I use mine on my phone more to be honest and it is faster some it is searchable and can jump to the page easily from the table of contents. 👍📸

Thanks for the clear explanation. My question is: In manual mode, since the camera isn't controlling metering, if I'm doing focus stacking, and I only change the focus point (but keep aperture, shutter speed and ISO constant for each exposure) do I have it right that the exposure of each frame will be the same. ie. That changing the focus point won't change the exposure? Conversely, if I'm in aperture mode and I change the focus point it will (potentially) change the exposure? Thanks again, David.
@davidsaylors3 жыл бұрын
As long as the light hitting the scene doesn’t change, you are right. You are in control of the camera completely so the exposure will all be the same as long as there isn’t a rogue cloud or an eclipse during your series 🥴😂 Dos that clear it up? In aperture priority though, the camera is metering the scene so it could vary there…

@davidsaylors10 ай бұрын
Under … wait for it … metering… 😉 No really, there is a button on the Z cameras that brings up a picture “menu” and it is one of those choices. (I think it is the “i” button) It should also be found in the regular menu as metering modes if memory serves me. Hope this helps.

I don’t always like how evaluated metering gives exposure priority to the area within the focus point square. Probably very good for portraits and ok for many scenes but if your focus point happens to be in a place that is overly bright or dark then it can throw off the desired exposure quite a bit. I tried centre weighted metering set to an area 100% of the viewfinder but generally evaluated metering works out better. Just need to be aware of the focus point exposure level priority throwing off your desired exposure level.
@davidsaylors4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is a big problem with me to, hence I normal just use matrix and then adjust with exposure company to make it look like I want. It can be frustrating. 👍
