Hey Devin, could you make a video explaining how you maintain perfect focus throughout your action scenes? settings, tips and tricks, preferred cameras/lenses, and most frequent problems you experience in the field regarding camera focus.

*Hey Devin, could you make video explaining differences in using IMAX, 35mm and digital cameras? I would really love to know... :)*
@NicolasWaldvogel
@NicolasWaldvogel 6 жыл бұрын
Sysel I know I'm not Devin but I'm studying film atm in London and have worked with film and digital cinema cameras so hopefully I can help you out. The main difference is basically this: The size of the sensor/film print . With 35mm and IMAX (I'm assuming you mean Imax FILM and not digital), each frame of an Imax film roll is 70mm big, so double the size of a normal 35 mm negative (used to be the standard on pretty much all Hollywood movies before digital took over) and therefore, a much higher resolution that is captured on IMAX. The aspect ratio on IMAX is also different. With digital cinema cameras, its the same principle but instead of an actual film roll, you capture the image onto a sensor like with a DSLR. Different cameras have different sized sensors like 35, full frame or 65 mainly. Like with film, the bigger the sensor, the higher the quality of the image that is captured. Other factors play into it of course like the bitrate, build of the sensor, color science etc. In terms of resolution as of today, the Imax 70mm format is still by far the highest resolution format available with up to 14K resolution (compared to a Red Weapon for example that shoots up to 8K). Also, 35 and 70mm film just have a completely different look than digital. There is more of a texture to the image and generally is not as crisp and clean as digital. There is much more to learn about the differences but these are some of the main ones. ;)

Well 70mm 15 perf IMAX is roughly 10 times larger than 35mm. So you'd get a much shallower depth of field, even wider shots, and separation from your subject from the background. This chart sums up everything rather nicely: phfx.com/tools/dpThing_philsSensorChart/phfx_philsSensorChart.png Kindof like the differences between a s35 crop sensor/film to full frame/Vista Vision (but they still are much smaller than 70mm 15 perf) Still to this day nothing can touch IMAX in terms of resolution. Theoretically it's a 18k photochemical scan, films like the Dark Knight did a 8k/6k scan for the DI. And that's obviously not a Bayer Pattern like today's CMOS cameras. Like how a "4k" camera after it's debayered is more or less a 3.2k camera. That's a discussion in itself. Also 70mm 15 perf is loaded vertically in the camera, compared to 65mm which is horizontal. And IMAX is incredibly loud, so recording audio isn't ideal, let alone the huge size of the cameras (generally with a 3 minute magazine of 70mm IMAX film it could weigh over 60lbs. at the minimum)

Thank you! I always learn so much from you! I've just released my first one minute film to KZbin and want to do what you do one day. I've been inspired by your use of the glidecam and often use them, but for this one I played with the stillness in the camera to create an impact. I'd really love to know what you think of it and I accept the challenge to create a dolly shot this week!

Can a dolly forward movement have a rack focus effect? I'm thinking if you dolly with the focus frame the same, the focus area will move with the dolly, and the original subject moving out of the focus frame will blur as the new subject comes into focus.

I was looking at the Dana dolly and the Kessler shuttle dolly, but I couldn’t afford those thousand dollar equipment. So I built my own version of the Dana dolly and shuttle dolly for like $200 most. Same dimensions, same size pipes for tracks and it works just as well. I used it on my last short film and they were beautiful shots

I have done a lot of dolly shots to reveal characters and location or setup, but the best and greatest I recommend is Woody Allen’s Hannah and Her sisters. The restaurant scene was the best dolly shot keeping it in a circle around the three sisters. Now what makes it great was they never have Lee in the shots together with Hannah and Holly because Lee created this tension or a mistake she has made and regrets and does not feel comfortable. So I thought the cinematographer had to capture the great separation. One great example of the dolly shot. A lot of great movies out there as well. But this is a simple example for anyone reading it.

Hi Devin, I also think David Fincher is a really good example of how to use camera movement. I love these more story telling type of videos. I find it fascinating how much of the story is told to you through each element of film making that people never thing about. Lately I have been trying to step up my sound game and use panning sound to make the audience feel more like they are there. I would really like to see you talk about the dolly zoom, if you are open to requests right now. I have always found it to be such a powerful shot since I first saw it back in Jaws. that one is a bit more difficult to do from what I have heard, but I cant confirm since I have never done one successfully.

Challenge accepted. Hey Devin, what are your thoughts on dolling with a drone? Too dangerous? haha I think it could work if shot in 4k and digitally zoomed to match 1080. Then use the drone to slowly push in? could be safer to push out then reverse the footage? but maybe the facial expressions wont look right?

What's the difference between a push-in vs a digital zoom in post edit? Does it really worth the hassle?
@jas_bataille
@jas_bataille 6 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely! Two very different thing. A zoom is *not* a push-in, traveling or dolly shot. A zoom change the focal length of the lense (or fake changing it in post) whereas in the shots mentioned here, you *physically move the camera itself*. That changes everything. A zoom doesn't feel like one of the above mentioned shots at all.... and, a push is really simple to do! If you don't have a dolly, you can take two long PVC pipes (costing next to nothing) and a cheap skateboard. Put a monopod on top and in a fixture attached to said skateboard... there you go! And if you doesn't think than this is worth the "hassle"... then my friend, you'll never be making movies. Sorry.

It has to do with something called perspective distortion that comes from the distance of your camera to the target object. In short, being closer to an object makes it become more 3D, for example, a persons nose will stick out from their face. The longer you are away from the object, the more it becomes compressed, and the less it becomes 3D. It works the same way with your eyes, too. I would suggest you Google and do a bit of reading up on the theory to understand it better. So going back, if I dollied in to my target, there would be a gradual change in the distance of the camera to the target, thereby gradually changing my perspective distortion, and 3Dness. If I just zoomed in or cropped in in post, there would be no change in the distance of my camera to the subject, thereby causing no change in perspective distortion. Plus, dollying in causes other objects in the scene to move as well, whereas cropping or zooming in doesn't make them move. Hope that explanation helps.
@Hangs4Fun
@Hangs4Fun 6 жыл бұрын
Look up parallax. A zoom is 2D and a dolly camera movement is more 3D, with new things coming into perespective throughout the movement, especially with panning dolly slides with something in the foreground to really show the parallax better.

zooming compresses the background, and the dolly shot doesn't, instead it pulls the subject in. look up dolly shots and zoom shots online and see the difference. also, in high production film, they use prime lenses and not zoom lenses.

Michael, what you're talking about is actually a jib. A dolly is a wheeled cart : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camera_dolly You can use a dolly to better control traveling, push-in, pull-back and sliding shots, among other things. With all due respect, I'm a pro, Devin is a better pro, and we know what a dolly is... You're making a mistake... sorry. But no worries :) On a side note, if you wanna get in this industry, always start from the principle that you ignore almost everything. Because, again with due respect, when you start, it's true. I stil ignore most of what this game is all about. ;)
