My journey with the Pentax 67ii is one of discovery, regret, and finally re-found love. After selling my Hasselblad and picking up this one I felt it was a good opportunity to discuss the camera through which most of my work is created.

Informative. Thanks for taking the time to do this review. I'm looking to get into medium format camera and this looks like a good one to start with.

I ditched my grip. I find it gets in the way. when I had my 6x7, I held it Bruce Gilden style with the shutter on the bottom. comfortable to hold and steady shooting is easier. with the 67ii, I can't hold it like that because of the shutter release position. I love my P67. Whenever I have my digital camera and 67 at my sides, the 67 always go up to my eye.

I've never tried holding it like that. With the 67ii I find it to be ergonomic enough to carry around. But you're certainly right, there are times where I just forgo the grip all together to keep it a bit more compact.

I use the grip just for lifting the camera, specially with the 200mm lens.

The same kit will easily set you back by $2,500 or more today if the camera is in decent condition, unfortunately 😓. I just bought one in June. You were smart that you bought it when no one laid an eye on this system 😂.

Nate, if you expand your lens selection, I recommend the 55mm 4.0, either of the last two versions. Optical perfection, and the focal length works well for both landscape and street photography. [But, you'd have to be Ironman to use a P67II for free-hand street photogrphy.]

I have a mint Hasselblad w/3 lens trinity system. The must have camera was only my ego talking, I find myself using a 35mm camera more. Thanks for you video, I'll try to rent a 67 and give it a try. It just may be the one for me..

Excellent overview, I have watched quite a few but this is by far my favorite. Like most people that decided to get a Pentax 67, I’m trying to decide between the 67 and the 67ii. I was told that since the 67ii has more complex electronic components, it is extremely difficult to repair or find a technician that can still operate on the camera. The major advantage for the 67ii is probably the weight difference. What would you suggest? I believe the 67ii is similar to the weight of pro dslr whereas the 67 is two pounds heavier? I don’t mind a bit of extra weight as long as it is possible to be carried around. I have the rz67ij system as well, only used a few times since purchasing it because of the weight. Thanks

The grip is great when using one of the waist level finders or using flash but not really helpful with the AE finder

I was hoping to see some images. I own the 6x7 MLU version w/ the 105mm f2.4 and I use a handheld Gossen meter with a spot meter and a super sensitive incident meter and all of my slide exposures are on point. I have the wood grip and I'm righthanded and I hold the grip with my left hand and use the heel of my right palm on the tripod hole to allow my fingers on my right hand to change focus and f-stops. I own many different medium format cameras from 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7, 6x8 and 6x9 and the Pentax 67, 6x7 is one of my favorites. Yes, it's heavy but I only need my normal lens, the 105mm to take some excellent shots. The camera is never in the way of the image.

I have the original Pentax 6x7. I can imagine that the shooting experience is much different on the 67ii, with the addition of AE and improved metering. Do you see issues with mirror vibration when on the tripod? I'm considering the 67ii over the Mamiya 7.

I've never had a problem with vibrations, even handheld. For me it's just about making sure I'm steady and lock the mirror before taking the photograph. That said I'm not a big pixel peeper so I don't do a lot of close up inspection on my images.

I do not mean to come off like a dick............however, if some take it that way, so be it. I am just asking to take these comments, and ask yourself, "O.K. What exactly would be the downside(s) of me taking these suggestions?" The thing I notice with most KZbin camera vloggers is that they basically regurgitate the instruction manual. I am going to guess that most prospective buyers are easily capable of reading the basics ('This camera can be used in manual, aperture priority, or programmed AE modes, it has 3 stop exposure compensation, etc. etc)." For me, (even though, yes, it's also in the manual), I would like reinforcement/demonstration of the whole bit about where you have to take the lens off to change the finder or perhaps it's vice versa). That is something super critical, that, if not done or done incorrectly could cause one to seriously damage their $1,500-$2,000 camera body. Also, while yes it's subjective, since I do not own a Pentax 67 or have the ability to handle one (without buying it first), I would like to have a reviewers opinion about the ease (or difficulty) of focusing, compared to say a manual focus 35mm SLR (since most likely, more people have experience with them) and/or focusing the Hasselblad that you had. I am also not familiar with Hasselblad, however, I have read that the 503 series is much easier to focus (has a much brighter focusing screen) than the 200 or 500 series. You didn't mention which Hasselblad you owned, however, I wish you had compared and contrasted the ease of focus (especially in dim light). As someone who very often shoots in low light, the ease of focus is of primary concern to me. Again, I realize that this is subjective, but it would be great to hear a reviewer say something along the lines of, "I have 20/20 vision and shot on the streets with a Nikon F3 for 5 years (again, something a larger number of people could relate to), and I found the Pentax to be very similar in terms of focusing." The final thing is that, while it is easy enough to find and read the weight of the camera, I'm thinking it would provide a good contrast (for people like me, who have never held this camera), if you had weighed the Pentax and then a pro model 35mm dslr to illustrate your point that the Pentax is not much heavier. "Hey guys, my friend's Canon EOS 5 Mk V weighs 1400 grams and the Pentax weighs 1555 grams woo, woo." Granted, you may or may not be a 'camera reviewer', as opposed to maybe you normally review knives (or whatever), and just happened to review the Pentax just because...........and, by no means was this a criticism, as I have yet to see what I consider a comprehensive KZbin review of the Pentax 67.................just several people regurgitating the basics and the obvious (the Pentax negatives are huge compared to 35mm) that are readily available online.............and, even then, it's one thing to merely say it versus, actually showing a 35mm negative next to a 120 negative. Just my .02.

Hi Nate ! I noticed that you have the first generation Pentax "6x7" 90mm lens on your camera , is there a difference between your version and the "67" 90mm version? Thank you!
@randallstewart175
@randallstewart175 7 жыл бұрын
The first 90mm 2.8 lens was incorporated a leaf shutter allowing more flash synch choice. This is a much later redesigned 90mm 2.8 first available during the "67" period. I consider it the best "normal" focal length lens available, being optically superior to the earlier 90mm 2.8 LS and the 105mm 2.4 lenses.

Do you mind me asking how much was tax/import costs coming from Hong Kong? I'm considering cameras from Japan, but not sure about the import costs involved.

Looking at the tariff tables, it appears that there is no duty/tariff levied on one used or new camera/lens. A 20% rate is charged in certain circumstances, but i could not figure out the differences. You can get a "binding opinion" from the government before you order overseas equipment. I have purchased both new, direct retail from HK and used [ebay] from Japan. I've never had to pay an import duty.
