Camera Review: Canon C300 II vs Sony FS7

A huge thing you never mentioned was the lack of base settings on the FS7 when in Cine-EI mode. The ISO is locked at 2000 and white balance options are limited to 3200, 4300,5500 while in cine gamma on the FS7. The C300II can use any ISO or white balance while shooting any gamma including CINE. Since you have to use CINE gamma in LOG mode to get the comparable 14 stops of dynamic range on both cameras, the C300II is far less limiting to the DP on set. That's a pretty big deal and no one ever hits in that in these reviews.

I just bought Canon over FS7 and used the FS7 a lot. They are very different when using in the field. The Canon's skin tones and color are much better. The FS7 has great slo mo, but other then that it really does not compare to the image quality of the C300. Just my 2 cents.

I have a question... what lenses and focal lengths were you shooting at with each camera? When looking at the footage you uploaded, at 03:53 the sony camera makes your model look about 5-10lbs heavier... any reason why?

I really like your format! As far as I know ( I've seen many head to heads) your is one of the more practical. I like how you kind of take a scientific approach Especially the harsh backlite test I find to be the most value able. I would keep the stuff you normally do and maybe splash in a field test. kind of like the USRA mini 4.6k test you did. I like that in a kind of a real environment test it was very close to the Arri Alexa. I can't think of any good test to add ATM however if I come with something I'll drop you all a line.

7:05 I'm not seeing a cliff on the canon. To me, the Canon blows out smoothly, more like film. Sony is less blown out, but that one patch doesn't have a smooth blowout, and it's got that noticeable yellow fringe.

Anything about built quality? I don´t know, but I have the feeling that the fs7 is much more plasticy compared to the Canon. So, if I want to shoot a docu in India which one should I take with me? Any suggestions?

At work we use The Canon 5D MK III, Canon C300, Sony FS7, and Sony F55.. Of course my Favorite is the F55 but its also triple the cost of the 300 and FS7.. I like the FS7 a lil more than the first gen 300.. I never had hands on with the mark ii as of yet.. Usability I like the Canon Cameras.. But output I do love the image of the FS7 after grading. The F55 looks gorgeous even on monitors. I think the C200 may actually sway me though.. what Ive been seeing from that camera has impressed me.. and once they update their firmware to use additional codecs I think it will be a very heavy hitter at the $6500-9000 price mark.. I like that you can output 4:2:2 pro res to an atomos. but would love to see 10 bit from it. As for the type of head to head.. I like the format you used here.. But maybe do a short clip from each shoot a similar lit scene and fully grade both. Give a blind test to the audience so they can decide the aesthetic they like most. Soo. much red noise! Even at the lower ISOs. Is that something to expect normally from these?

I was surprised at the noise in the Reds. In my experience, Red is a color that is more difficult for digital cameras than most. It's possible that is exacerbated by spreading a 10-bit signal over such an aggressive log curve.

I'd love to see the tests as like 2 Short films...same shot lists and lighting, but comparing cameras. Or like talking head interviews....just easier to relate too I guess! Amazing video though!

C300II has an internal mic for scratch tracks for lining up audio in post. It also has the option to add two more XLRs as well.

Sony sensors are great if you know how to use them, but something to consider is that people know canon so if they hire you for footage they will request canon more than sony

Hi. I'd love to see a comparison between the Ursa Mini 4.6k and the Sony A7s Mark ii. I know the 2 cameras are in different leagues but I think that they may be quite similar when it comes to image quality. I'd also love to see the difference in dynamic range

It looks like Canon corrected problem at 9:52 with latest firmware update. They call it "luminance banding" "In response to user feedback, Canon has made image-processing improvements to Canon Log 2 to improve overall image quality. The original 15-stop Canon Log 2 gamma curve remains unchanged. However, with this update to Canon Log 2, you’ll see reductions in low-level and chromatic noise across the entire image area, but especially affected is the low-level noise. Almost 19 minutes and you left me still not knowing which one i should go with...you guys obviously know your camera stuff, but maybe you should go into more of the features of each and which one has the advantage on which feature...for example: the touch screen. Maybe I missed it, but to me, we are at this really awkward moment in camera technological history, where every company can produce some type of a touch screen, but some do it much better and more complete, and this is where I feel Sony really betrays their customers (me being one fo them). They will NOT (for reasons I cannot for the life of me explain or begin to understand...WHY they refuse to make any camera with a full and complete touch screen, but Canon does...even on their DSLR’s or mirror less cameras. Why Sony refuses to give us this technology has me so pissed off, it is making me want to get a different brand every time i purchase any type of camera...the only problem is: even with this shortcoming, Sony still makes better cameras. I will to God, they would give us the whole enchilada, and not part of the enchilada...BASTARDS!!
