Great summation! I get so tired of people oversimplifying stabilization with a "golden rule" saying that there is never any conceivable situation when a tripod stabilizer or gimbal stabilizer should be combined with O.I.S. Instead, you point out the limited reasons for that "rule." (And I note that the proponents of "no-O.I.S.-ever" usually argue so aggressively because they lack equipment with the feature to begin with -- desperate to justify that shortcoming.)

This was excellent!! So as KZbin vloggers, we struggle a bit with our mirrorless camera (FujiFilm X lens series). I do use a Crane M2 gimbal, but that has a lot of draw backs.. We can't use the pop-out view screen, which is the whole idea of making sure we're in the shot when speaking to the camera (food reviews, etc.) Then when filming on the move, a gimbal is a must with our mirrorless camera or it is way too shaky. Another issue is we need a wider angle lens so that we can be in the shot, as well as the food we are sampling. Can a lens like this enable us to be in the shot, and have stable footage without using the gimbal? Fujifilm Fujinon XF 10-24mm. It does have an OIS off/on on the lens. Also hoping this will provide better/snappier auto focus as the standard lens our camera came with struggles at times to find focus. Thanks for your time!

I can get smooth 4k 24 bit video using a GH5 handheld with just about any lens including third party lenses, but with my Nikon Z6 (full frame), it's hard to get a steady video 4k shot hand held, even with the quality Nikon S lenses that were made for the Z mount. If I shoot in 1080p, then it's pretty good. The Panasonic GH5 is ideal for videographers and film makers who like to shoot hand held.

what about on a ronin gimbal. I have the the Nikon z 6ii with a prime lens

when you are using the sony camera (my a7 III) on the gimbal do you disable IBIS? Because when I record a video, for example when I walk in a forest, objects (trees) in the video are very torn, and jerky, such an impression that the eyes seem to be double. I use 1/50 shutter speed, 24 frames. I try to disable and enable internal IBIS in sony but the results were the same. When I record some static scenes video is amazing but only I move the camera - my eyes are bleeding. Gimbal also are correctly balanced.

Some MFT cameras (Olympus and Panasonic) have very good IBIS. Apparently, the larger sensors struggle much more with it, though.

I have the gh5 and it has a 5point sensor stabilization, which was ditched in the later models. I have a full frame equivalent 70mm on it and when ibis kicks in its like its frozen in place. But it does make it harder to get a clean shot from the constant drift and jitters on the side

Does this advice count on a panasonic GH5 as well? (Not using IBIS with wide lenses or when panning/tilting on a tripod) ? The reason I ask is because the GH5 IBIS seems pretty good, and there is not much information about when NOT to use it on the internet.

I havent had any weird motion using a full frame equivalent 24mm lens, but if you’re handheld and try to track an object at at a distance, it’s hard to get a shot without ibis jumping all over the place. Same goes for handeld on longer lenses, i looked this video up as i’m wondering if i should just turn it off. It does help massively when there’s just a little camera movement like some macro or closeup or still shots.
