Very comprehensive and you held my attention all the way through. Lots of hints and tips based on your actual experience rather than the manuals. I love the editing, including the humorous bits left in. You put in a lot of work and it shows. Well done!

This is epic! I feel so many photographers are very secretive about these things so beginner like myself have to spend a loooong time researching, spending heaps on buying the wrong things etc. This video is a fantastic start for me and has answered questions I didn’t even know I had haha thanks for this! Also, big kudos to the ethics section at the end. Another very important point, especially about the feeding! I think a lot of non-biologists wouldn’t think about this.

Thanks so much Dani. I bought the Camptraptions set up and there was no manual or instructions, particularly for the sensor which is frustrating, so your slides detailing that is really helpful! Thank you also for pointing out the ethics involved in wildlife photography as so many people have cameras today, but lack the all important knowledge of their subject or the environment they are in. Great job!

Clear and comprehensive vid--you're a great teacher! A question/thought about flash effects on crepuscular and nocturnal animals; even a few seconds of reduced visual acuity in the life of a prey animal makes them vulnerable since their predators are usually hunting nearby. I hope predators are repelled and not attracted by the flash. I really appreciate how you emphasize ethics and care by putting it at the end. You are awesome.

Hello Dani. Inspired by you, I am now building a camera trap for myself. I have a large plot of land with a lot of forest on it. I hope I catch a fox, deer or a marten. I was able to get hold of a Nikon camera with flash for less than 200 €. I will soon have all the accessories together and will start building. Thank you for your helpful video and for sharing your experience here. I wish you good luck and always good light !!

Hi, I just discovered your channel and thought this video was really informative. One thing you could change in the set up if you don’t want the flashes to “blind” the animals or you don’t like the look of the photo due to the intensity of the flashes is to use an infrared converted camera and infrared filters on your flashes. However this will result in black and white photos but it will be totally stealth. 😃

Thank you for a detailed, easy, informative and educational video. It will be interesting to continue watching your channel from time to time. You have inspired me to try something similar in the spring. It clearly simplifies photography compared to long nights in a hiding place. I get to read about what applies in my part of the world where this type of unattended camera installation can be seen as surveillance cameras with a permit requirement.

When you go setup for long term camera trapping, have you thought about using a single large battery pack to power all your devices? I guess every time you double the number of flash packs, you can halve the brightness? You can never have enough flashes.

Super useful video Dani! Great that you also discuss the ethics too as this has always been in my mind. I suppose for nocturnal animals like badgers then flashes will scare them so not a good idea to set a trap near their sett?
@DaniConnorWild
@DaniConnorWild 4 жыл бұрын
Badgers rely on scent and hearing as their primary sensors. They have poor vision anyway. So you're fine to use flashes on them. I would use diffusers though and limit the number of shots when triggered. Maybe set up with a bit of distance from the sett and lure them with peanuts before going too close to the sett.

Since there are no instructions on camera trapping in German here in Germany and I have seen your videos about camera trapping on You Tube, I would like to ask you which basic settings you use on the sensor and on the camera make.I would be very happy if you could help me with some information. Occasional wildlife baiting is a big concern. It might not be harmful for the animal at all, but is harmful for any photographer with ambition. There is a lot of picture-takers who don't include information like that under their photos (of wolves or lynxes for example), which is tremendously misleading. Shortcuts for the sake of success and glory are everywhere. The video is quite good though.

My buddy does this to capture wildlife. He uses a big plastic bin with a lid and he has a hole cut in the far end of the bin. He left it out for a weekend on time, and when he came back hornets had started building a nest. So be careful if you did this. 🤣😂🤣
