in defense of the cellphone, you have taken out your Smartphone way more times than any Camera, therefore almost anyone will have it faster ready to take a shot. Also "near macro" shots are so easy with a cellphone, because the lens is already attached and the small sensor provides way more depth of field than big sensor cameras. i carry my big camera almost daily with me but rarely take a shot with it - unless i'm on a dedicated photo trip. However the quality improvement makes those trips so much more rewarding

If you take out your cell phone frequently at a tourist destination in Italy, there's a good chance that the next time you reach for your cell phone, it is already gone. Cell phone has a lot of personal data and serves many different purposes other than taking pictures. A camera does not. I'd rather lose my camera than my cell phone. So I would rather hide my cell phone and take pictures with my camera if I visit Italy.
