An X-T4 is $700 less than this, the 4K is sharper and also does 4K60. I don't know why the GH6 5.76K is so much softer than X-T4's 6K downsampled to 4K when the X-T4 is the one discarding information. Anyways, my point is not that this isn't a landmark in amateur photography because the X-T4 is cheaper, but because the GH6 is priced out of amateur range entirely. No amateur should spend $2500+ on a camera, they are better off learning the ropes on something like an X-S10. Also $2500 is a bullshit price for an m4/3 camera no matter the featureset. That's above the current top-end for APS-C. And the X-H2 is $2500 and will exceed the GH6 features adding 8K. Way too greedy especially since Panasonic has no market share.
@Superz3ro2 жыл бұрын
@@Vinterloft It’s not $2500, It is $2199… If one were to order now that includes a 128GB CF Express card that is easily worth $199. So actually, the GH6 is $1999… Also don’t know how you can come to your conclusions for a camera no one actually owns as of yet… I will reserve my opinions about what it can do when I am able to handle one myself… Just because a camera can shoot 8K, doesn’t make it better, and Video feature-set does matter. That is why Sony Alpha cameras and Canon EOS are useless to me… Too each their own, as your mileage may vary… …

*It's so frustrating trying to get enough specific test footage to evaluate the GH6's 5.7K and 5.8K resolution image settings by searching up and watching various youtube reviews, such as yours. It seems everyone wants to show you how great a 4K camera this 6K capable shooter is ! Really ? I'm not interested in purchasing a higher resolution 6K capable camera, just so I can shoot in 4K all day long. I want a 6K or 8K resolution camera so I can shoot in 6K or 8K all day long and deliver in 4K ! I cansider 4K the new 1080p, and I treat it as a delivery resolution, but not as an image acquisition format. The image quality from the GH6's 5.7 and 5.8K 4:3 open gate sensor is awesome ! For a micro four thirds sensor, the resolution and clarity of the image at 6K looks really incredible !*

Tbh I don’t agree that autofocus is essential for your type of work, it’s just easier that’s all. Manual focus is really easy to set when filming yourself, all you do is sit where you are going to be and focus on your tripod then when manual focus is set put the camera on the tripod and that’s it job done, no pulsing no drama, just total control.

One of the advantages of the M43 system are the lower priced lenses. Most of the reviewers, if not all are using the more pricey Lecia M43 lenses. It would be interesting to see some more (autofocusing) tests with the GH6 paired with the old Vario lenses like the 12-60mm (f3.5-5.6), 45-150mm (f4-5.6), or even with classic 12-35mm f2.8.

thanks for answering a question no reviewer did on launch day...streaming capability. you say NO. uh oh. that is the gh5 II, and just plug and play on the web LIVE is great. shame on them, not putting that in the gh6. the AF? no one is praising it. even you are careful to nuance your comment. what a shame. In the launch event, right off the bat, the American Lumix rep said "it's contrast based AF, we may consider PDAF down the road, but not in this camera, take it or leave it....watch reviews and make a decision about AF". I'm paraphrasing but that's the essence. anyway thanks for the effort. We've all waited 5 years. what difference does 50 codecs make if the video is not reliable focused? It seems it's pretty much like the gh5, even some pulsing. I don't mind slow smooth focusing but the pulsing? meh. And the FAN MAKES NOISE. I think that may be picked up by some mics. It looks like a great video camera. With the introduction of this new sensor, the big question I have is, will we get a stills centric camera; G9 II and, even more importantly, a GX10? I was hoping the 4K Photo mode would be enhanced, not dropped, but perhaps on a video camera like this GH6 it isn't needed. This GH6 doesn't compete at all with the OM-1. If Lumix don't make a range of new models below the GH6, then they are effectively giving m43 stills to OM. I hope that doesn't happen because the competition in the past has pushed both companies to give us some fine cameras.
@cameralabs2 жыл бұрын
Good question and the fact is we don't know yet. It's amazing how strong the G9 still feels today though...
@Serenoj692 жыл бұрын
Well..not everyone is interested in 50 fps with Af-c. I for one would buy the GH6 over the O-M1 (I think, thorough reviews are needed of course) because that Hires mode is really great for landscape photography and the O-M1 cannot deal with movement anywhere close to what Gh6 does. This is a very capable stills camera, but less so for actionshooting. Again: if that is not too important, the GH6 might be the better choice here too. Regardless: I would love to see a G9-II with the same sensor, much faster bursts and bigger buffer, lighter weight, smaller size, bigger EVF (like O-M1) and swivle.tilt screen we see in the Gh6. Also may be they get a brainwave and introduce OSPDAF to the G9markII since the artifacts it causes is probably less of an issue with stills (unsure though). That is: Panasonics beef with it. I have very very rarely heard users complain about the artifacts the OSPDAF causes in their vids or stills...
@Serenoj692 жыл бұрын
@Random Thought Sadly that is what I got too. If I am correct the rumour or statement by Panny was that for stills you can buy a FF and for video you can buy both. Which makes little sense. If a m43 sensor is good enough for video inspite of a chip 1/4 of the size of a FF, the same is true for stills. It is not like the IQ difference between the two is huge, at least not by my standards and I also shoot (or better: shot) D800E simulatenously with my Em1.2 till 2019 for instance. And the D800E is still very close to current topperforming FF sensors, at least according to DxO.

2:50 the reason why the 6K photo mode is gone because it is replaced by the 5.8K open gate mode. Basically "6K photo mode" used HEVC and was fixed at 30FPS. I guess the only thing missing is a frame browsing utility for extracting still frame JPGs. It's redundant.

You're right, the anamorphic 5.8k mode does capture video using the full 4:3 shape of the sensor and I made a few recordings of it too. But you're also right that the really important part was the frame navigation, and in the case of post focus mode, the auto focus racking and frame tagging for different distances.

Hi Gordon, thank you for your straight forward excellent review(s). I have an important question. As I am also a 'one man band' 95% of the time I use AF during my recordings. I now own the G80 and GH5 but am slightly disappointed about the AF capabilities. For example it is difficult to use AF in Vlog style interviewing my customers at an exhibition, something I do very often. I most cases the AF is not catching up well and when people are standing/walking behind me, I loose AF on me and the person to be interviewed. The challenge now is that I own some 6 Lumix Leica lenses and one 25mm 2.8 Olympus MF4/3 lens. Now it is time for me to buy a new camera and I feel, I have two options. I now would like to choose between the OM-1 and the GH6 taking in mind that I use a 8-18 mm lens for my interviews (No IS). Would it make sense to move to the OM-1 using Panasonic Leica lenses or stick with the Panasonic brand (GH6)?
@FuzeDzn2 жыл бұрын
Worth remembering that the GH5 uses a much much older focus firmware compared to the GH6. The GH6 is using a system based upon that of the S5 which improved AF performance by 5x for Animal tracking and 2x for face/eye tracking. With the faster sensor and processor, the performance on GH6 is even better than S5 and this is before any additional firmware improvements. The O-M1 is the same price for the body, but with a lower resolution sensor & lower spec video that the GH5 already beats from 5 years ago. I use the S5 to film weddings on AF-C 95% of the day and am very happy with the results.

Very useful review Gordon. Thank you. The high-resolution mode is especially interesting for many stills photographers (e.g. those potentially moving on from a G9), but no early reviewer - as far as I can see - or the specs has yet mentioned whether the GH6 addresses the 1 sec max exposure limitation of the high-res mode on the G9. I assume it does, since the electronic shutter is longer than the G9's 1 sec, but is it, like the S5, now limited to 8 secs? And does the GH6 - like the S5, but not the G9 - allow for long-exposure noise reduction in high-res mode, with dark frame subtraction? The G9's limitations in long exposure and noise-reduction in high-res mode were significant constraints for low-light use of the high-res mode (e.g. for dimly lit interiors), so it would be great to have a little more detail on this!
@cameralabs2 жыл бұрын

It looks like the performance is quite good at 12,800 ISO, I've seen some side by side tests with the GH6 and the GH5 and there is no comparison between the two. I own the GH5s and it seems the GH6 is almost on par in lowlight ability.

Thanks for your support for so long! I've been on KZbin now for 16 years and a journalist for 30! It does frustrate me that KZbin doesn't reward sensible channels and instead encourages the use of clickbait or OTT presentations, but that's where we are. It's weird my channel growth has been completely linear for the entire time, none of the usual spurts or curves you see on other, newer channels. It is what it is though. I think I will need to adopt a Patreon model going forward as the views are too low to justify it as a full time job.

Excellent Review ! I have a question: I searched the GH6 specs and didn't find any 8-bit codec for 4K at 50 or 60 fps for MP4 or MOV format, only for 25 and 30 fps. But the GH5 II still had 8-bit codecs for 50fps and 60fps in 4K. Is it true for the current GH6 firmware that there is no longer an 8-bit codec for 50 or 60 fps?
@cameralabs2 жыл бұрын
That would appear to be correct. ALL the MOV formats are 10 bit and most of the MP4 formats are 10 bit as well. There's only 4k 8 bit MP4 at 24-30p. Do you have a computer that struggles with 10 bit?
@wolfgangpetersun27302 жыл бұрын
@@cameralabs For example, if I want to send a 10-bit video to friends, I don't know if they can watch it. It's similar to when I send a HEIC picture of my iPhone to friends instead of a JPEG and they can't see it.

It's too bad for both your channel and Nikon that there has been this split in terms of their product samples. The Z9's 8k and frame rate options and picture quality and autofocus being such that they are_ but your not including them because of course you've not had the camera for testing to be able to compare it _ seems particularly odd for a reviewer of your position and them as a manufacturer. I would like to see an amicable return of the two parties, but understand the logistics and difficulties behind the scenes are not something the public ought necessarily be privy to. In either case this was a nice thorough review as usual.

@Serenoj692 жыл бұрын
The Great Gordon at it again! Thx! One question of personal interest at least: since HHHRS must work different from tripod Hires is there an option to chose tripod Hires in some way. The latter is very accurate and of course does 4 shots for resolution and three for colour accuracy something a handheld version cannot possibly get us and tends to use a load of shots that does not get us any better colour if I am right. So on an Oly this is a choice, how about Panasonic. Another one is the restriction of a max of 1 s exposures on the previous hires modes of Panny. Do you know if this is extended to 60 s or preferably minutes? Thx in advance!
@cameralabs2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the handheld High res mode is an option you need to enable, so if you don't, it's effectively in tripod mode.

I was rudely awoken from my sleep last night - was it a neighbour’s car alarm? Dogs barking? No it was the sound of an embargo being lifted! Thank you for such a thorough & balanced review - even for an initial look. There are clear improvements in both the Panasonic & Olympus camps over previous flagship models, and I am left wondering are we finally approaching the theoretical & practical limits of this format? How much more could we expect? The other thing that this & other GH6 reviews have underlined is how high a bar the original GH5 set, and that for many filmmakers it still remains a very capable camera. Look forward to the full review.

@@cameralabs thank you for your answer. I’m looking forward to those tests. I chose the OM1 mostly because of the compact body size, the ergonomics (fits perfectly in my hands), best weather sealed option (I’m asking my self about the GH6 with cooler in this regard), and apparently better general AF (let’s wait for your tests). Another important aspect: the OM service Center works perfectly in Germany (Portugal), and I have bad experiences with the Panasonic Service Center. In the video side I think that OM should do a better job, but I’m not buying this Camera because of the video capabilities. But I would like to have 4k 120 (96 would be fine)
