This is by far the best review of the GH6 that I've seen since it's release! Thank you for all the effort and time you put into doing this video. I never owned the original GH5, but I do have the GH5s and GH5 II and I never thought the AF was as bad as everyone was saying. I think the AF performance from the original GH5 really left a bad taste and the whole "DFD AF sucks" just became a meme that people kept repeating that I think is not completely warranted. I don't know if you have the popular Sigma 18-35mm + Speedbooster lens combination, but I would like to see how well or poorly GH6 AF works with that combination. Fantastic work! Thank you!
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Art of Server! Yes, DFD is still not the best and has quite a few limitations but i really don't think it sucks at all. For the last year or so I did most of my youtube video using S5 and pretty much all AFC (apart from product shots ) and it works great for me. Sorry i don't have the sign 18-35 combo, but if i get a chance to try it, i'll do some test and let you know!

Fantastic review, Richard! It was fascinating to see the performance compared to the A1, since while in AF-C the tracking was a bit slower it was still equally reliable to the A1, but the GH6’s IBIS was so much more effective in video. I guess that is one area Panasonic has always been class leading, but that was incredible, and even compared to the results with the S5 which I had thought was quite impressive when I saw your original tests. Adding to that the the high res photo mode, VFR, and all the video formats and external recording options, they really crammed a lot of new tech into the camera. In a way, it seems a bit similar to when the GH4 came out; there were other cameras that had the specs of the GH4, but not at that price point, and again especially for video, the GH6 is really competing with a lot of much more expensive cameras. I think it says a lot that you were comparing it to the Z9, A1, and R5 throughout the review.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with what you said. While there is no single ground breaking feature, and it's not a camera without flaws, but look at the specs esp video side and compare to all the cameras that is under US$3k... None of them is even close to what the gh6 can do.
@charliecooper3030
@charliecooper3030 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealRichardWong BMPCC 4k is half the price and still produces a better image with a better codec. The IBIS would definitely be great, but with autofocus you still can't rely on and a limited dynamic range, GH6 doesn't seem to offer anything new that would dethrone Blackmagic from its place as low priced cinematic king.
@joestrahl6980
@joestrahl6980 2 жыл бұрын
@@charliecooper3030 my understanding is that BMPCC 4k is not exactly stellar when it comes to still pictures/photographs. For those that want a hybrid photography/videography camera then the BMPCC might not be the best? Everyone's needs and mileage may vary, right?
@charliecooper3030
@charliecooper3030 2 жыл бұрын
@@joestrahl6980 Yeah, pretty much useless as a stills camera. If you absolutely need both...I'd just get a second stills camera better than the GH6 then a BMPCC 4k, best of both worlds. But for really nice looking cinematic images, videography or films, BMPCC is hard to beat.

Richard, again you prove why you're the best reviewer going. You manage to juggle all the techno-speak yet remain entertaining. One thing I'd say I've notice is that most important improvement over the GH5 is skin tones - they're vastly better. I owned the GH5 for 2 years and never could quite rid the image of the sickly green/yellow tones. The color baked in no matter what. Now the color may (or may not) still be burned in, but man do the color look better. GH6 looks to be THE run and gun camera.... until the S5 mark II any way. Still don't know if the GH6 is actually more cinematic than something like the Blackmagic 4K (still amazed by the image that camera can produce), but it's a lot closer than the GH5, which always looked "video-ish" ro my eyes. Great review.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 2 жыл бұрын
Oh thank you very much @Evil Genius Enteertainment ! The S5 Mark II when it arrives would be awesome (probably still a few years away), but it probably can't match the GH6 in quite a few areas like IBIS and those unlimited high quality/high frame rate modes.

What a piece of work! Interesting to see how this ‘best m43’ will do now that full frame has become more affordable and the market has changed. ( I actually never expected a GH6 to be introduced at all ) I am curious if the AF upgrade will find it’s way to other Panasonic models, or if it is just simply working better on a smaller sensor.

Not sure if the new GH6 AF can go back to G9/GH5II (completely), as i think a big part is improvements is from the new more powerful processor which allows better tracking. But for future cameras that will use the same processor, definitely!

Richard hi, I really liked this video! Very detailed and well thought out. Yes, I can see for you too this is hard, hard deciding do you go with GH6 or adjust or stay with full frame. Agreed, yiu are correct, the landscape has changed, all the big boys (camera companies) have gone into mirrorless full frame. Me as well I have gone in now owning two Sony mirrorless full frame cameras. Like you I am so torn though because I really love my Panasonic GH5 even though low light is not good and not the best AF. What to do? I have 4/3 glass, but I feel i still want to hold out keeping my glass. Perhaps Panasonic G series is now only a few firmware updates away from something great or their next camera GH7. ...what do you think? Thanks for a great video. You being, out there, putting yourself out there makes me believe, yeah you can do it. Thank you man!

Hi Garfield, thanks for watchnig and sharnig your thoughts. If you already invested in micro four thirds, and also has full frame cameras, i feel getting a GH6 would be a cost effective upgrade to complement your full frame setup. There are still lots of things the GH6 does a lot better than it's full frame competitors. IBIS (check out my IBIS comparison video!), no recording limit and no overheating even in 10bit 4k120, all those high quality codec for internal recording, and all those assist tools are all not available in any full frame camera under 3k or even 4k Thanks again!

This is the mode detailed review of the GH6 - thanks for doing it. The side by side comparisons with GH5ii are very useful. Why have they dropped live streaming from this? That's a deal breaker for me. M43 is meant to be compact - do you think it's too big and heavy for travel photography? I feel like the fan is an unnecessary size/weight penalty because I've never heard of the GH5 ever over heating even if it records all day.
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 2 жыл бұрын
Why no Livestreaming? I don't know if it's marketing or maybe there is a real technical reason or it could be down to prioritize the most important feature as it is a brand new sensor, processor so everything need to be redeveloped. The fan is really needed for the new higher resolution and quality recording as Panasonic is aiming for unlimited recording. Size wise.. if you are ok with the gh5 then it's not too bad. But I definitely want to see a smaller stills focus camera in the future.

I've been in the Canon DSLR camp for a long time. With Canon announcing that they are dropping DSLR, now it looks like they may be dropping EF/EFS lenses too. None of their mirrorless cameras use them without adapters. I've really been on the fence about switching to something else. I'm not excited about anything in the R series and there have been concerns if they will continue with the M series. I was leaning towards Sony as it looks like they will stick with E mount lenses for a while and they work with both the budget and high end cameras. While only MFT the GH6 still solves many of the problems we see on other full frame and APS-C cameras as well as those on older Panasonic cameras. I could easily pick this up for a lot less than an A7s iii and be very happy with the production results.

*Good job Richard! I want to ask a question. I want to buy GH5 M2 or GH6 for my videos. I couldn't find the answer to a question I was wondering about. If I want to live stream with OBS Studio via USB-C, how do I power so I can shoot for hours? The battery will not be enough. Does USB-C provide simultaneous power or will it need a dummy battery?*
@TheRealRichardWong
@TheRealRichardWong 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Onur Naci Ozturkler, if you want to do livestreaming using the USB-C port, then you would need a dummy battery as I don't think the USB port can be used for powering and tethering at the same time. Just be careful with the dummy battery you use. I used a non Panasonic one I previously bought for the S5, it works OK when shooting 4k videos, but when i switch to photo mode the camera would lock up and have strange behaviour.

@@TheRealRichardWong I would love to see you discuss autofocus settings on Panasonic cameras. Watching your comparison to the Nikon, it looks like the camera detects body and face quick and then takes a second or two to focus. When you increased speed and sensitivity, the focus speeds up but is more erratic. It looks like around 10 feet it would lose focus and then try to catch up. I have been using the GH5 and S1R for a while and have grown to like at slower focus speed when regaining focus, but I would be interested in your thoughts and settings for different scenarios.

It certainly has it's limiations/flaws, but as long as you aware of limitations and have the settings correct, it works really well for me in the real world for me . I watched some of the reviews you mentioned too, and really wondering why the result is reaelly different what i got. And that's why in my autofocus test videos, i usually show some long clips, not just 5 seconds. So you guys can see the actual performance when the camera try to track under different conditions.

Excellent, thorough video. However, the value of the review is reduced by not stating the codecs and bit rates used in the camera comparisons. Where you shooting 5.7k prores, was the GH5s 10 bit 422 400mbs or thru any external recorder? Other then the rolling shutter tests, there was very little about frame rates when doing the comparison either. Not wanting to complain, but that info would be helpful.

Thanks for the input! Will note that down for future reivews. But to answer your question, all were recorded internally. Most samples shot in 10 bit.. some 422 some 420. Frame rate either 30 or 60 or ,120

Hello there, sorry I am not really familiar with your editing software so a bit hard to comment on the best settings. Is your computer struggling with the 10bit video? Are you shooting 422 10bit? If so, try 420 as you maybe able to take advantage of hardware acceleration when editing 10bit 420 footage. I don't know if you're Panasonic ambassador but the GH6 has a big issue. AF-C video with low framerates (24/25/30fps) in 4K/C4K and 5,7K is quick but not accurate at all, see my videos. The GH5 has much better AF with these settings. I thought my camera had an issue but I just tested another GH6 and there is the same issue. Some few lenses like the 25mm f1.4II are not impacted at all but most of my lenses are (like the 10-25mm, 100-400mm etc). To resume, the issue appears in C4K,4K and 5,7K below 48fps. Before pressing the rec button the AF is great and accurate but immediatly when recording the AF becomes innacurate. In 5,8K Open Gate the focus is accurate (but it pulses a lot more than the GH5). However no issue in 1080P, or in C4K, 4K, 5,7K 48/60fps. With these modes the focus is accurate and not so bad. So it really depends of the lens and the framerate/resolution you use. I can't believe nobody speak about this issue, but it's certainly one of the reason why so much people were disappointed, and also thought the videos were too soft.
