CameraRec Toby I need to shoot some small jewelry and small items for ebay. Would it be good to buy this lens or save money for longer focal length?

As an ex-professional photographer, I have handled cameras from 5x7 to Minox and prime lenses in a lot of focal lengths as well as bellows, slide copiers, extension tubes and the likes from 1958 on. Recently, my wife bought me a Nikkor 40mm f2.8 at my request. While it's not the most expensive, it does the job rather well and I've put it through all kinds of tests, some not described in the video, one of which was to photograph one key of my PC keyboard 1:1 The results fully met my expectations, as I now volunteer at a museum and photograph their artifacts, some of which are lapel pins an the likes, for which I no longer have to use closeup lenses with some of the former equipment I had. Nikon mentions that the lens will focus to about 6 inches. I remove the lens hood (because it blocks some of the light) and manual focus the lend to its maximum length, which will bring the image to great magnification, shooting about 2 inches away. As the depth of field is very critical, I tend to shoot at a fairly small aperture, which means slow speed at about the ISO 200 (or less) that I use, depending upon the light.. The use of a sturdy tripod cannot be over emphasized here, even in bright sunlight. The best way to trigger the camera is with a Nikon remote control but in most cases, when doing closeups., I use the self timer function (10 secs), as it allows the camera shake to subside. Camera on tripod, of course. With camera on a tripod, I sometimes shoot in Live View, as it gives a good idea of how things are for focus, depth of field etc. I found that it is closer to some of the view cameras which I formerly used. For the record, my basic experience with cameras was with the 4x5 Speed Graphic and flashbulbs. THAT's where you learn about photographic technique, such as swings and tilts, reciprocity failure, bellows extension, manual focus and light quality in ºK as well as direction. So, purchasing a 40mm f2.8 lens was a no-brainer. .

This lens is great for food photography - you don't want to get too close to food, it starts to look scary super close. The 40mm is just about perfect for food photography.

Yes - this lens would be quite nice, the focal length also minimizes distortion with 40mm being very close to what the human eye perceives as normal. There is a link under the video I would appreciate you using if you plan to buy from Amazon.

There is so much information to wade through online when you even start to think of a lens, but when I came across your video, like your pictures, it all became crystal clear. Thanks for breaking through all the "noise" with a concise overview. The Nikon 40mm you've talked about sounds like the right choice when I make the plunge. Thanks for the great advice!

It is a fixed lens - no zooming in and out. It is a good lens, a very good lens. Good for insects as it lets you get 1:1 without getting terribly close.
@photorectoby
@photorectoby 11 жыл бұрын
There are several macro options of the Nikon. It really depends on what type of macro you are shooting. Some get you super close and some just get you close. Also depends on how much you want to spend. I am sorry I missed this comment earlier.

On a T4i the 60mm EF-S is a very nice lens. The 100 gets you closer, useful if trying to photograph skittish things but you pay more. Crown jewel of all macro lenses is the 100mm L with IS, but that costs over $800.

I have a question! Someone else already asked but you didn't reply so I'll ask again. I just got one of this for Christmas! I already have a 35mm and a 50mm and I have been thinking since both are so close to 40, does it make sense for me to have all those lenses? Will I be sorry if I just replace the 35 and 50mm with this lens? I have also been thinking of updating to the 85mm Macro instead, just b/c you don't need to get as close to the subject to get the 1:1 thing as you do with this one. May I hear your thoughts and advice? Thank you kindly!

Maryvel Friesen yeah , maybe you should but incase you are into the Video shooting with heavily relying on autofocus this lense might not cut the pass mark too well.

sorry - not sure what you mean. you do need to get close to get macro action with this lens, so insects that fly or run away from big lenses in their faces would be hard to capture. Longer focal length macros are used by most photogs that capture macros of insects.

You could swap and have one lens that does both or you could go for a more serious Macro like the 60mm, which isn't that different but does get you just a bit closer.

I just ordered this lens and expect to get it tomorrow, so it was good to get your take on it. If I can make a suggestion regarding your videos, I like the way you did this and it looks very good. The one thing that prevents this from being a REALLY good video is the sound quality. You should consider getting an inexpensive lavalier mic for these videos. I have a $25 lavalier made by Audio-Technica and it makes for clear, professional-sounding audio. Other than the audio sounding somewhat amateurish, this is a very nice video.

Nikon 105 is awesome macro and more zoom but I think you want me to say that those cheap 70-300 zooms that also call themselves macros will work. . . they are not true macro but they are not terrible, just ok. Tamron 70-300 is the least worst :)

Hmm. I'm buying my first ever DSLR (a D5300) in a few weeks, and for the longest time I thought that the first post-kit lens I'd buy would be the 35mm f/1.8, which would be my everyday walk-around lens. However, now I'm thinking of going with this for the extra versatility. Seeing as it's only £30-£40 more expensive than the 35, I'm not really seeing any reason not to choose it. Thanks for the video and for helping me decide.

What defines a lens as being a macro (or micro)? I am looking at the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G, which has a wider aperture, but is not really marketed as a macro lens like this one is. Comments?
@SimulatorMoments
@SimulatorMoments 7 жыл бұрын
1:1 magnification or higher lenses are called macro. Some lens manufacturer like tamron/sigma will try to pass off lower ratio lenses as macro. But real macro is always 1:1 or higher.

The aperture has nothing to do with macro capabilities. As a matter of fact, if you bought the 50mm expecting to be able to get close to your subject, you are in for a bit of a let down due to the 1.5 crop factor. You will have to back up quite a bit and if you’re in a tight space, you might not have enough room. The 35 mm is a much wider lens but also not a macro.

Nice review! My kids have recently gotten into photography and just bought D5600 standard kit w/ 2 lenses. I want to learn with them. I am thinking of pairing a used D3200 with this lens (also used) to be my "mom camera," and to serve double duty as their macro as they need. I only want one good multi-purpose lens for myself, but I want something that will benefit my kids while they learn. Knowing that the closest I intend to get near serious photography is to throw Annie Leibovitz's airline baggage back in the 80s, (yeah, I actually did), does this seem like a good plan, or would you suggest a different set up?

Great review video! Quick question, I was looking to upgrade to a D7100 and, to cut back on cost, I was wondering if it would be reasonable to have the 40mm f/2.8 lens INSTEAD OF getting a kit lens that comes with the D7100? I already own a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G so I don't think I need the extra length the 105mm and 140mm kit lenses offer. I previously owned an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 which worked fine on my D60 with regards to versatility, however, I'm not sure if I'd be losing any versatility with it just being a 40mm lens. In addition, I was looking for a good macro lens and something that would expand functionality of the D7100's video recording capabilities.

Hey, I'm a partner in a brand agency. We just purchased this lens for our new Nikon D5300. We bought this camera and lens mostly for product shots, print/stationery shots, work/life shots, and portrait shots (that will be taken in-studio most of the time instead of outside). We ultimately want to give viewers on our website a glimpse into the life of our agency, our work, and our team. We may use the camera for client work as well (mostly portrait shots, product shots, and work/life shots for their websites). Do you think this lens is ideal for what we want to do, or would the 85mm f/1.8 work better?

Do you recommend AF-S DX Micro NIKKOR 85mm f/3.5G ED VR? I search a lot of this lens and it's a good lens but i'm kind of confusing is that the length zoom of this lens fixed 85mm or it can zoom for lower lengths?

Hello. I have a Nikon D3300 and my question is: If I am looking to take landscape and wildlife shots and some of those shots being from a decent distance what exact mm lens do I need? I am not really sure what else I should be adding/asking here, I am just looking for quality above anything else. Your comments are highly appreciated. Thank you!!

You have the kit lens now? That is fine for much of your landscape and general photography - for wildlife and some more epic landscape a zoom lens like the 55-200
