Tom Antos just conducted a blind test with several DPs. The results were quite interesting. Almost everyone, including me, preferred the image of the FX6 over the Arri.

Coming from IT and just starting my journey in video production I am convinced that everything depends on the specs, the objective and the workflow that makes you case. The less you spend the better for the results you want.

Totally agree about not needing expensive cameras. But I just wanted to mention that being contrasty and the composition having range is a concept that is completely different to the concept of having the scene fit within the dynamic range of the camera. They are two different attributes which are not directly related to each other. In my opinion, much of the importance of the Alexa lies in what you don't plan for. Those select times when you are in a pinch, lots of money is on the line, a lot of crew is on set, you don't have the time to, for instance, bring in some extra light to minimize the dynamic range of the composition, and you're finding yourself in a position that you didn't plan for. Its meant to save you when you're in a bind. It allows you more freedom. In the sense that you can now technically achieve workable shots that normally wouldn't be possible because you cant always do things like "throw a light there". The thing is so damn heavy tho. They just came out with a new one that's super light. We should all be living by the motto of picking the right tool for the job. The only difference are the toolkits that different people will have at their disposals at different phases of their lives. And that's okay. Like you say, be happy with what you have. I know I'm saying the same thing. Just felt like writing today.

the scenario you mentioned never occurs in shoots where a lots of money is on the line, a lot of crew is on set, and no time to bring in lights...such situation is always planned for ahead of shoot and never happening out of nowhere, it's what pre production is for. huge dynamic range in high end productions is like using a calculator to calculate 1+1, You know it equals 2, but You still use the calculator just to make sure even when in reality You just had to use it cause You have it.

This is 100% correct. Arri cameras and lenses are the bleeding edge of technology and are the very end of the “diminishing returns” possible. No 99% of productions don’t need them, but when your production’s electric bill is higher than your camera budget, it only makes sense to have the best possible camera. Sure there are massive crews there to make sure things are perfect, but massive crews require massive payroll. If setting up those extra lights would push your whole gaffer team into OT, that could easily cost more than the rental rate difference between an Alexa 35 and a Sony burano.

I recently DESTROYED my go pro 10, and didn't realize how much I relied on that stupid little stabilized waterproof disposable camera... And now I have to use my fx3 more... So sad!

I think gear does matter. BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t make quality videos or photos with cheaper gear.

I really want to buy a used Alexa mini LF just so I can hold it in my left hand and my venice 6k in my right hand and smash them as hard as I can just to see which one will survive all while filming the whole thing at 1000fps. I may add an option to place bets for you guys, I'll take 20% of the total bets placed for my efforts. that is the only time I will buy an ARRI for my production business 😂 😂

The test that guy did was silly. Just some random shots that don't push the camera just using natural light.

arri themselves have said both ways are acceptable. The germans tend to pronounce it the first way, and the rest of the world says it the other way.
