Given how socially conservative Bach was, unfortuantely, he'd probably be traditionally prim and proper:( but as soon as he'd sit down at the organ...

So many experts! I happened to have the pleasure of hearing Mr Carpenter perform at Stanford's Bing concert hall recently. I think he's brilliant. He brings a fresh insight to the organ repertoire. Do I agree with all his interpretations? No but I admire his artistry. Having heard first hand many, many organ recitals first hand, the most memorable being that given by Karl Richter I can say I thoroughly enjoyed Cameron Carpenter's performance.

Sorry about all the douchebags who made the incredibly pretentious statement that your persona is "too pretentious for them to enjoy the music". Incredible performance and the slight tweaks were in good taste. I'm sure Bach would have loved to have a technically gifted pupil like you. The one thing I would have done differently is not arpeggiated upwards at the very end; I think the descending arpeggio in Bach's score is like an ending statement. Keep doing what you're doing, you are amazing!

I just cannot believe he plays the theme in the pedal, fantastic! He is the Gould of the organ. I first noticed him when his transcription of Scriabin's 4th sonata come into my view. It was late at night, driving in the dark, I thought it was fantastic. I love his Bach also!

Cameron I don’t like comparing you to others however and I apologize but I believe you are the next Virgil Fox. Like I said I’m sorry. I also will say you are needed to carry on the Bach legacy on the pipe organ. I wish I could meet you and explain. I live in Maryland.

I would like to see Rex Moonberry, who had a brief response to a salient point, try to do this himself. No way. Technically, you can't play with this degree of precision, at this speed, with perfect phrasing. You can't do it, it's just insanely perfect technique. Yes, Carpenter is Fox's red-headed stepchild. Same approach, same photographic memory, it all fits. And I don't really even believe in crap like that. But it's obvious. I'm sure this will piss Mr. Carpenter off, so I should say that he performs with more precision than Mr. Fox. But a very similar spirit of interpretation of the pieces. Hey Rex, go fuck yerself. :)

@garrghhh Жыл бұрын
@@lukeluke7082That's a good point. Technology has been changing continuously, and pipe organs in Bach's day were quite different from what tends to built today - there were no "electronic linkages", of course. But, there are still (physical) properties of, in particular, very large physical objects being made to vibrate through pressure / air flow that differ from the properties of some membrane being made to directly electromechanically vibrate (or whatever - whatever kind of speakers and other electronics are at work here ... not my field and can't go off on that sidetrack this moment). I imagine this is fairly well-known by many who've worked with pipe organs and various kinds of "simulations" through other means. But, it's not something that immediately comes to my mind, at least now - it's been years since I practiced. I do recall it being an absolute consideration in playing certain sections of certain pieces and deciding on overall tempo for some pieces, in general.
@garrghhh Жыл бұрын
So, his performance is great - and, his general style and such always reminds me of Virgil Fox, another who used electronic versions substantially. Though Carpenter is "more metal". Heh. But, his style may not be (so) possible on non-electronic instruments... I'm not entirely certain, but, I could definitely imagine it being impossible on many pipe organs, and perhaps being borderline or perhaps impossible on even the best instruments (where best refers to speed and precision and all of that of electromechanical actuators, valves, ..., capacity and other properties of "blower system", etc.).

@@bwacuff169 why? Because the music he is performing was made by a genius, the likes of which have only been seen a few times in human history. Cameron will never be able to reach that, and neither will you, so why not bring yourself closer to them through their music?
@bwacuff1693 жыл бұрын
@@SR009s Only, if you were in any state to justifiably lecture others about music this attitude you've got going here would never have occurred to you. Even if it had, it wouldn't have made it past the word "clavier". It didn't strike you odd that I knew that? You didn't foresee looking foolish on your legless high horse because you didn't like me framing a performance compliment as a jest, for my own amusement? Which leads to the interesting question of how you got on the subject of Bach considering I said nothing about him. And if you got on him because of the link I posted it's even more ridiculous because you can hate what I write all day and I'm fine with that because I understand what music is. But if you listened to that piece and didn't hear the Bach in it, I've got some bad news: you've been listening to Bach for however long you've been listening to Bach and not hearing Bach. You shouldn't presume to know what others hear. I don't know if I comprehend music better than you but it isn't the least bit likely we experience it the same: I have synesthesia. An odd form of it: I hear motion. So I don't know when you started listening to Bach but by sixth grade I was listening to works like the Brandenburgs and the Well Tempered Clavier on two stereos at the same time - slightly out of phase - because the hyper-harmonic structures and counterpoint that appears is insanely awesome. It's more Bach than Bach. And that only works with Bach's music because - as I've said in the past - if Bach wasn't the demigod of music, the Earth has never suffered the footfall of a demigod. If you'd like to know something about music, I'm actually a very good person to ask. I can tell you things about the subject that have lived under your nose your entire life but you've missed. I'll throw you a bone...Beethoven maintained throughout his life that Handel was the greatest composer to have ever lived. Being particularly fond of "Saul" and "Messiah" Beethoven hand-copied a good portion of "Messiah" in order to learn how Handel used the human voice. In fact, one of Beethoven's favorite pieces of music was the Hallelujah chorus. Knowing all this, where did Beethoven get the idea for the 5th symphony? From, as some claim, the species of bird that has a call exactly the same as the 5th's opening 4 notes? No. Is it "Fate knocking at the door?" No. The 5th was, almost certainly, an inverted retrograde variation of the Hallelujah chorus. The first four notes the tenors sing - flipped backwards, upside down and moved from Maj to Min are the first 4 notes of the 5th. And the first phrase of the 5th is the same as the first phrase the choir sings in the chorus. Interesting, no? Two of the most passionate pieces of music ever written - one praising the glory of God, the other, the fury of a man who it could easily be said was wronged by God - both spring from an essentially simple-minded, 4 note germ. Speaking of one of Beethoven's favorite pieces, have you ever hummed the section of the Hallelujah chorus, "For the Lord God Omnipotent Reigneth" and then hummed the "Ode to Joy"? I'm not certain about that particular connection but, it's quite the coincidence, isn't it? And he'd already linked the 5th to the Hallelujah chorus….why not the 9th? And speaking of the 9th, have you ever noticed the 2 minutes that Beethoven spends showing everyone the perfect form of a rock song? Literally. There's two minutes of bafflingly flawless rock form in it. He actually threw down and repeats a break that 100 + years later someone will change the intervals of the two middle notes to - and create the quintessential blues and rock: the "EAGE" break. (The break in Peggy Lee's I'm a woman or "Rocky Mountain Way", etc) Those are things I noticed before 8th grade. I'm 50. What do you suppose I've heard since then?

Yes, he's young, good looking, showy and very confident. He obviously loves what he is doing and maybe his exuberance winds people up. If there are sometimes a few mistakes in his playing, well that don't bother me. Good to see someone so young having spent the time to master an instrument that, no matter how much I tried, I could never, ever be any good at. A few guitar chords is my limit.

@generalackbar2456 жыл бұрын
It will be difficult if organ players, for the most part, keep looking back for the past 3 centuries, instead of looking around them and playing with their time. The problem with God (please forgive me, Father) is that He send His sons here down on Earth, but His sons are not truly welcome by their peers. The fact is, Cameron is today being ostracized (and surely will end up being crucified) by his contemporaries, the same way Jesus has been two thousands years before. And remember, even Bach was kicked ass when he came back to Arnstadt, after been knighted by D. Buxtehude and J. A Reinckein during his journey to Lübeck. Even Bach... ... we are lost. :)
