Debussy has an interesting translation of this symphony into piano music, and I found it in Warner's complete set box, then I found this symphony --- why Saint Saens's symphony is not famous? Actually it is quite elegant.

... musikalisch sehr wertvolle, interessante Symphonie, leider zuwenig gespielt; auch dies ein Edelstein in Martinons verdienstvoller ORTF-Gesamteinspielung aller Sinfonien...

After I listen to Saint-Saëns's Piano Concerto No.5, I know the reason why this piece of music is not so famous --- this is good taste and elegant, but Piano Concerto No.5 is charming, really charming.

Fantastic interpretation ! Jean Martinon directed it perfectly. I don't understand why this piece is never played, even in France where Saint-Saëns is so much loved ... Only the third symphony is played

This symphony is a masterpiece, and this recording is the best- and unlikely to be surpassed. I have written to symphony presidents/conductors to suggest that they program this work in the concert hall [in the US] -particularly 18th century specialists I would think would really enjoy conducting this work. Saint-Saens was a master, and I am so glad to see greater interest in his splendid legacy. thanks for posting this!

@@che7111 One factor considered when an orchestra's season is planned is the scheduling of new or unfamiliar works. Most audiences prefer familiar works, among them works that feature soloists, choruses, etc. Programming commissions or recent works usually makes a favorable impression on granting agencies as does a series of concerts devoted to a composer's anniversary or a theme. Performing a single unfamiliar work is unlikely to draw a larger than usual audience, and unless the work is a show-stopper that the ensemble can perform exceedingly well, perhaps a genuine seldom-played masterwork, granting agencies are unlikely to give that group's application many points for having included it in its season. A conductor associated with a composer's music or perhaps the country may help with attendance. With good marketing a French program led by a French conductor, say, the late Jean Martinon, could attract a sizable audience, especially if the Saint-Saëns were sandwiched between other works the audience knew and liked. Broadening audiences' curiosity and willingness to listen to new or other unfamiliar works is usually an aim of the best orchestras and conductors, unless they specialize in a quite limited repertory.

The rhythm of the IV movement is interesting: the first motif is a quartus paeon: ¯ ¯ ¯ ˘ , whereas the second motif is a cretic (amphimacer): ¯ ˘ ¯
