As strange as this design looks it's actually effective as a bayonet. As a knife it would fall flat but that's not what it's intended for. In the review I give you a closer look at it and let you know my opinion on this tri-blade oddity.

don't quote me on that, but iirc a bayonet is exactly that: a spearhead that can be unhooked from the spearhaft and used in other ways. i mean, i see "bayonet", i think "to be put on a stick and make it pointy". i like well-made hollow-grip survival knives for that. my albainox rambo-style survival knife is crud as a true survival knife (too light), but lash it on to a staff and it kicks all kinds of plant ass. i'd love to try cold steel's "spearhead style" bayonets to see just how versatile they really are, but i won't shell out their asking price just out of curiosity.

Eddy Guizonde what you think when hear bayonet is correct looking at it from a historical perspective the original bayonet created in France went in the barrel of the musket meaning you couldn't fire the weapon making it just a spear then later the design of the bayonet changed to the typical shape you think of when you think of a musket bayonet that went around the barrel

Dimitrilium the empty middle doesn't really matter for damage unless you intend to let it remain in the creature that's stabbed. It does reduce 'suction'(friction vs meat) when withdrawing the blade though.

SonsOfLorgar Flesh would probably fill in the gap between the blades somewhat, once the blades stop moving forward...that would cause the bayonet to tear it even more during pulling out and cause massive damage. I imagine that would happen, at least. I would be wary about using this on chest beause bones/ribs might interact negatively, but for pure flesh and guts it's devastating.

Weren't tri bladed knives banned in the Geneva convention due to unnecessary suffering caused by the difficult to repair wound channel? Edit: thx for all the replies and the conversation going on below. So it seems tri blades are not named in either the Geneva or Hague conventions directly, however, the reason people think it falls under a ban is the idea it causes unnecessary suffering which is caused by the triangularly shaped wound which people think disqualifies this knife type from military combat.

Maybe as an emergency spear. Possible problems with it. Secured to a shaft it is offset from the shaft, makes it a bit weaker. The hollow core, for lack of a better term, could trap materiel in it. That would make it harder to withdraw.

*When I did my own research into bayonets (many years ago) I found out that somewhere between the American Civil War and World War 1, bayonets (with three or four sides) were banned on the battlefield for among other things of being cruel and unusual killing tools. Most bayonet shapes (three of four sided) took inspiration (in part) from small swords and stilettos. They were made for thrusting, causing pain and suffering, or more to the point, keeping soldiers off the battlefield if they managed to survive a stab, it would take longer to heal compared to a flat blade. Reasons like this were why bayonets of this shape are banned from the battlefield. Today combat knives with a bayonet lug are the new bayonets that can be used because they are basically just BIG knives with a lug to attach to a rifle. *= I could be wrong.

m.blacktree yeah, it would have made a lot more sense if it had a QD-picatinny mount on the grip instead of that weird tri-tong hollow grip. That way it would really work as a modern universal bayonet for every weapon with a lower or side rail handguard near the muzzle.

I messed around with mine a bit and I like it. I beat it up pretty good and it held nicely. I was able to get it fairly sharp with a mil file, each blade has only 1 edge and is flat on one side. Something like a scandi grind with a micro bevel on the other side. As an older vet and I can see its uses as a self defense dagger, or a brush bayonet affixed to the barrel of an AR. I would use wire to affix it though. I think its worth its weight in a bad mad max type situation my opinion for what its worth lol... I think I'll try and get the cuts right using a ban saw, mount it center to a 6ft wooden ash pole using BARBED wire and epoxy.... Should look pretty mean on a stick like that! Maybe affix a pickaroon or a CS shovel on the other end..lol - I've hunted alot with bow and arrow and always like the success of a solid 3 blade carbon steel broad head. It is tough for sure at least mine seems to be.

One major problem with this design is that it will not slip between the victim's ribs (too wide because of the triangular shape), so it would only be usable against the abdomen. This could be a problem for a bayonet, I would think. Any veterans with actual experience killing with a bayonet care to comment?

David Weihe I believe the bigger problem would be yanking it out of the body. If you stick it in hard enough (sic) to break a rib or two during entry, the broken rib might get caught between those blades and you would have very hard time pulling it out. On the other hand, imagine the damage a broken rib stuck in it would cause when you try to yank it out...literally ripping the poor bastard apart.

I remember another triangle shaped knife, or more like a stake since like this it's not as efficient for cutting. It might actually be banned in some countries.

Weren’t there old bayonets that were three pointed to cause more damage and stop blood from being stopped or something, and eventually it was like...banned by the Geneva Convention? Or am I crazy?

It doesn't look like a knife coz it's a speartip. In a survival situation never lash your only knife to a stick your best using a sharp harder wood point or a makeshift bow and disposable arrows and a handmade club all made with your knife you still have safe on your person ready for more.

"Spearhead" was my actual first thought, yea. I'm not sure how sturdy the tines would be for sustained spear use, though.

Yeah, but for that reason they're illegal in war, so this'll only really ever be used on wild animals or whatever in a survival situation when attached to a stick. Could've mentioned the moral complications of that when it comes to home defence thought.

Eh, I think I'll stick with the issued bayonet. It just has that extra utility and lightness that makes it handy. Plus, I can't use this tri-blade as emergency bolt cutters or a monopod when shooting in a field prone, therefore useless lol.

Snake Over that's what I meant because you can have something that never sticks into wood but you use it on flesh and it goes all the way up to your hand e.g. Prison toothbrush shanks
