These rifles are from a time when tanks were still vulnerable to them, naturally... They became mostly useless halfway through WW2, when thicker armor became the standard. So you'd need a pretty old tank to test them. I don't know if Scott feels like risking it, but simply shooting some steel plates would be interesting. Maybe build a little bunker to shoot from, and shoot at slight angles.

A 20mm AT rifle of the period would be fine at stopping most of the interwar tanks and especially armoured cars. A 20mm AT rifle isn't getting through a KV-1 unless you're shooting the optics to button it or attempt to jam something important. (If you want to get into penetration it really depends on the round and the quality of the armour you're shooting, along with the impact angle which is very complicated to explain on paper, a high power round hitting a vehicle made out of hardened steel is going to be very loud and distressing for untrained crews which may give the interpretation that a hit has disabled a vehicle, even if it did absolutely nothing.) And yeah, rapid fire AA guns (or a particularly large machinegun or autocannon) can be devastating weapons in urban combat, this has been something known since the invention of automatic cannons. Tl;dr Correct but not for the reasons you might think
@andrehashimoto8056Ай бұрын
AFAIK. KV1s had a specific area of the rear armor covering the Engine that was THINNER, so German 20mm AP or even HVAP could manage to punch through there and disable the Heavy tank. If lucky one maybe even trapshot the rear turret segment and nail the Ammo stowage of the tank itself. But Good luck moving a FlaKpanzer to the proper position
@bhunterbmw335is2Ай бұрын
It was actually a pair of armored reconnaissance vehicles sporting rapid fire 20mm cannons, they raced up behind 2 kv1 tanks before the massive slow tanks even had a chance to get moving and they just riddled the rear of the vehicle with 20mm cannon fire and set both tanks on fire

Cast iron shatters. 308. At 350 yards punched thru one side of old chevy 350 block
@1234567890CABАй бұрын
@@fatravingfoxmusiclover2095 aluminum is a softer metal similar to copper or lead, so the aluminum would give way before the bullet took much damage. If you've seen high speed footage of shooting steel plates, the lead bullets almost splash or peel apart on the steel and just leave some lead behind marking the impact. That's why they need to put a harder core of steel or tungsten in armor penetrating rounds. When comparing hardness, the harder material will do more damage to the softer material, that's why you need diamonds to cut diamonds. Cast iron is a harder metal but it can be somewhat brittle. Also older tanks were large hunks of cast iron so a cast iron engine block would be closer to its intended target. Shooting any engine would be cool to see but cast iron or steel would definitely be harder to get through.

Your accent as "Dubya" is so spot-on, I love it. I'll admit I'm not always a fan of your intro skits, but this one was pure gold. Edit: Quick question, is this the rifle they used in the Italian L33/3C tankette? Its barrel looks very similar. Edit 2: Just had an idea. I'm probably not the first to come up with this one. You and Matt (Demo Ranch) should do a "shoot my stuff" event at Desperado Ranch! I'd absolutely fly out from Washington for that.

There was a book written in 1996. The authors name was John Ross. The title of it is "Unintended Consequences." The protagonist in that book was named Henry. His main rifle in the story was that exact Solothurn. The book is very cool. Its about gun culture. I paid $85.00 for it years ago; now its even more expensive but nevertheless a great novel.
