Bushcrafting on a budget? Here is a review for a budget knife the Camillus Titanium

I tend to be a knife snob. I’m not stocking up on $500 custom jobs or anything, but I do lean toward mass produced knives in the $200 to $250 range. I bought this knife as a beater. But, it continually performed admirably at whatever task I threw at it. About 3 months ago, it was stolen. I IMMEDIATELY went to Wally World and purchased another one. It has become my go-to EDC. It’s not my favorite knife, by a long shot. But, if I found myself in a survival situation, and had only my Camillus Titanium, I would breathe a sigh of relief. It’s not just a good cheap knife, it’s a good knife, period. I’m a drifter. Roam all over the damn place. Occasionally, I find myself in a situation where I need to barter. I carry a couple Moras and a couple extra Camillus Titanium for just that purpose. When you live on the road, and are among people in that culture, a knife is a great bargaining chip. And, at just $10, I can trade for $15 worth of goods. They are a,so great to put into emergency stash boxes. They perform well, and if my stash box is found or destroyed by the elements, I’ve only lost a $10 knife.

Nothing wrong with that knife there, my friend! The knife you have is the one that keeps you alive. I have a friend that absolutely refuses to spend over $10 for his bushcraft/hunting knives and also, wants to buy it "sight seen". He needs to look at it and touch it so he only buys from local big box stores. He cannot understand how I order all of my knives and spend the money I do. And you know what Lee? They all cut, process wood & game, sharpen, strike ferro rods and carve. He will let me reprofile his edges and sharpen the spine (if needed) but he doesnt care about any of that. He also couldnt care less if his stainless WM blade cannot strike a spark off a piece of chert. He has taught me a lot about what really isn't "needed" in a knife and costs associated. A lot of "knife snobs" or "knife experts" can learn a lot from him. Thanks for the video, brother! BTW, how is your grandson doing? Teaching him more bushcraft like the one stick fire..lol! -Dave

+Outdoors West Virginia For the price it is a pretty good knife. In all fairness, I will say it is not my primary knife so it does not get used as often as my others, but I have not had any issues with it when I did. It holds an edge pretty well. I would suggest it as a great back up knife or a good budget starter knife. Thank For Watching, Lee

Sorry for not answering sooner, for some reason went to spam. It seems to be a great knife for the price. I do not think I would want it as my main knife, but as a backup. It would also be a great knife for task that you may not want to preform with your main knife. Thanks for watching~

I own a large collection of knives. Vintage Bowies, Skinners, all kinds of knives. Some of them very expensive. I have this Camillus Titanium, and it's never far from my reach. Sharp as a razor blade. Reliable. It's an EDC knife for sure. Not just for beginners. It does the job.

My next door neighbor just gave me one of those 2 days ago. I haven't tested it yet but I love how comfortable the handle is and how light it is. It went straight to my tool box. She's got a hard life ahead of her. I do construction.

Gandalf The Grey It is a great knife for the price. As I mentioned, I would not make it my primary knife, but works great as a backup or for jobs that you do not want to use a good knife for. It has stayed decently sharp, and sharpens well, but I used mine to pry with...yup broke off the tip!!!! In hope it works well for you. Thank for watching
@cjinthewoods52355 жыл бұрын
I picked up one of these knives a couple months ago just because of the price. I bought the green handle with no coating. I was very impressed. I had no issues batoning some thicker wood, but I use a hefty slab of wood as a baton. Does a great job with shavings, scrapings, and feather sticks. It also throws a great spark from a ferro rod due to a sharp spine. My only issue, like you mentioned, is the sheath, I would have proffered a solid polymer/plastic sheath and would be willing to pay the extra if it came with one. It does hold an edge pretty well, and is pretty easy to sharpen. I actually like this knife a little more then my Cold Steel SRK in SK5. Great review on a solid knife, thank you for posting this.
@LeeRalph1005 жыл бұрын
I to was quite surprised by this knife considering the price. I am not the best at sharpening, but was quite pleased at how it took an edge. So true on that sheath!!!! The only issue though that I have had was that I broke off the tip. At this time I do not remember what exactly how did it..but I know it was not prying or something like that. But still a good knife...it will never replace my Moras, but a great backup to have on hand!! Thanks for watching and the nice comment

I had that camillus knife from Walmart. It broke in 2 weeks. I barely used it. I was standing in front of a tree and started to throw it into the bark and sticking it in. It worked fine, I got it to stick well. I threw it in and stuck it like 4 or 5 times and the last time it just snapped. Found there's two holes in the blade under the handle, where two little plastic pieces go through the knife to gold the blade together. The weak point is where those wholes are at. I've seen enough forged in fire to know it's not the best idea to put holes in your blade of ours going to be taking stress from any kind of work. And it's titanium enforces, so I didn't think it would break. But it's harder, so it's more bridle I guess.

That was a piece of eastern red cedar, you can fluff the bark up and put pine resin in it to make a fire starter that is compatible with firesteel, lighters, and matches. It works quite nicely as long as it is dry, and you can use pine cones to help build the fire. Any pine resin or thing that smells like turpentine will work.
@LeeRalph1005 жыл бұрын
Yes it is eastern red cedar. That is my go to source for tinder in my area. In my area we do not have natural pine (the only state with out natural pine!) I agree on adding pine resin..it it like using gasoline LOL But as you mentioned ...ohhh the smell! Sorry for the late response, Thanks for watching and the great comment!

Been a good knife fo me as well. I love the shape of the blade and it's thinner metal which I've found aids carving. Yes it's cheap to purchase but that doesn't mean it isn't an excellent knife. I would recommend a good sharpening as soon as purchased and it will stand against any high dollar knife. A sharp edge is the key to the performance of any blade. And the sheath is excellent. I'm enjoying them both.
@LeeRalph1007 жыл бұрын
I agree totally about cost versus quality, usability. You are exactly right on the sharping as soon as getting it. I mainly use this as my back up knife but it has never failed. I think the price makes many think it is not a good piece of gear...but the Moras prove low cost does not low quality. Thanks for the comment

@gonetoheck9 жыл бұрын
I bought two of this exact same knife several months ago... they both slice through paper very easily straight from the factory. My main grief has to do with the sheath... nylon just doesn't protect you from the blade in case you happen to stick the knife in your sock while on a bike ride. Take it from me, it will poke your ankle right through the sheath ! I was close to needing stitches in my ankle from that mistake. Again the blade is very sharp ! I have since bought some scrap leather and other supplies to make sheaths with.
@LeeRalph1009 жыл бұрын
Brad Cox I agree the sheath is a bit cheesy. OUCH, glad it was not serious. You are right about them being sharp, I have to admit I was doing some sloppy knife handling when I first got the knife. I put a nice clean slice in my palm, I did not even realize until I saw blood!! I think you have the right idea, maybe time to change the sheath!Thanks for watching, Lee

Would it sharpen like a normal steel knife like aus 8 and 440 ? I heard titanium knifes are hard to sharpen
@LeeRalph1003 жыл бұрын
Great question. Sorry for this long reply....I want to first start off by saying that I am far (very far lol) from a knife expert as to types of steels and metals used.... I am just the kind of guy that knows the knives (or any tool) that works for me and those that don't for any chosen task. OK, after that disclaimer lol here is my best answer based on my own experiences and a bit of digging after reading your question. As to sharpening...as seen on a sharpening video that I did...again I am far from an expert on sharpening. Titanium is much more difficult to get that good edge than you would find on a hardened steel knife...but as we both know Titanium Knives also have many advantages over steel. To me a Titanium knife is an ok EDC knife, or for use in wet environments..or mainly as a backup knife when all other options are not available. But just to focus in on the sharpening. This type of metal can make them very difficult to get the edge that you want, and sadly it will not last as in heavy or daily usage. The downside to not getting one sharp is that the lightness of the Titanium blade makes them more prone to breakage and more difficulty in use when dull. I did a bit of a search and found a LOT of different bits of advice on how and what to use for sharpening. The three main things that I gathered are 1.) Whatever technique that you use...do not be aggressive..the metal is soft 2.) Plan on more sharpening once used 3) Do not make this your primary knife I hope this helped...and Thank you for a great question that made me dig a bit more as well!

I bought one as a 10 $ insurance policy on my better Kbar knives. Thats how I look at it. If anything happens It'll happen to the $10 blade instead of the 50$ one. Yeah I'm cheap but hey I like it !
@LeeRalph1008 жыл бұрын
That is basically what this one is as well. I have at least one "lesser" knife in each of my kits. I love Kbars, but prefer a lighter knife, my preference is the Mora Bushcraft Black. But as I mentioned, in each kit (camping/hiking kit. get home bag, etc) I usually carry a back up too. I would rather use them for asks that I do not want to use my "go to" knife for. Why did you say FAIL when it wouldn't baton through the larger log? Will your Mora Black do it? I don't own any knives this small that's why I ask. I have small pocket knives, filet knives and my bushcraft knife is a twelve inch Schrade SCHF9 Recurve with a six and a half inch blade. I'm looking for a better knife for finer applications then the Schrade. I find the Schrade a bit large and bulky for fine cutting.
@LeeRalph1008 жыл бұрын
Very Good question, truthfully I never thought about it. I guess I just assumed the Mora would have done fine on the batoning. I have not had much issue with the Mora's. I wished I could go back and compare the two. I think I was a bit disappointed when I tried to take of a smaller slice and did not split as I had hoped. I had a couple comments suggesting I that I should have used a bigger baton. I do think of the two, the Mora are a better knife but I think either would do well as tool for fine cutting. Thanks for Watching and the Great question!!
