A very nice offering from Camillus for the camping/survival/utility category. You probably already own one. Let me know what you think about it in the comments!
If you have friends and family who are crazy about knives and want honest, transparent reviews, please tell them about my channel. I am uploading new videos every other day!

Camillus went out of business several years ago. Another company bought the rights to use the Camillus name, logo, etc. I don’t own any of the original Camillus knives, but I do own the one your reviewing, and I agree, it’s not just a great cheap knife, it’s a great knife, period.

I didn’t know this about the ownership. I’m going to look into the background on this company. Looks like a lot of original USA knife makers handed off their branding and company to new owners in the past couple decades. Thanks for the info. Glad you’re enjoying this knife!

It was about 2006-2007. I was trying to get their navy knife (sheepsfoot folder with locking marlinspike) and everyone was out of stock - everyone. So I checked the news and it was their final bankruptcy and door closing. They sold patterns and patents and stuff to Acme United (sounds like a RoadRunner character). I hit ebay real hard to get a few navy knives before they were gone. I was learning knots and ropes to teach scouts, and needed a decent rope knife, which most aren't. Scouting's knotting and lashing was my gateway drug to knives.

i have 3 versions of that knife. that one, a green handled one, and a black plastic handled one. I like all the blade shapes and the price. whenever i go to Walmart i always check to see if a new version is out, even if I don't need it lol. if they started selling them in hard plastic sheaths it'd be even better (imo). It'd be really cool if they offered a smaller version too. of course, this all fits in my knife usage needs.

The only reason to carry a knife is to open the package of the next knife you buy. Seriously, it proves you don't have to spend a fortune on a knife that ultimately you're afraid to use for fear of losing or damaging it.

Bought one of these when they came out, great camp knife! Use it for batonning, cutting rope, with my fire starter... no problem. Loved it so much I went back and bought my boys and wife one each for their packs. Also picked up the Carnivore, had seen some reviews saying it was cheap and weak but I haven't had a single issue. They both sharpen easily, I haven't seen a rolled edge yet and I have been pretty aggressive with both. For $10.00, it would be a mistake not to give it a shot yourself.

I've been using this knife for over a year, and I'm still amazed that it's not behind glass and is only $10 at Walmart. I own a few fairly expensive knives, and a few Moras that I also love as an inexpensive knife, but this one goes with me camping every time. The blade keeps a good edge, it's comfortable to carry, and I baton the heck with it on 2"-3" firewood. Great for shaving, feathering, and the back edge is good for a ferro rod. Only issue I've had is my own fault, and that was batoning some super hard and knotty ash that was also a little too thick and I hit the rubber handle and it split a little where the blade starts. Still perfectly usable...just a minor annoyance to the looks. For $10 I can always go get another, but it's still fine for now. :)

Cammilus went under in 2007 because of worker strike & what not . I want to say acme tool bought the name.Any way i have a Walmart jobie identical to this one & i use it everyday pretty much at work , home fishing ! Its not a CRKT which is my first choice always but i forgot my moss back CRKT & was already halfway to the feild i had to work & needed a substitute for the day & low funding to boot ! Go to walfart bla bla bla 10$ ! I was & am still tickled w/it! I been useing it consistently for a few months because if i lose it on a machine in the middle of a huge feild well bummer it was 10 bucks not 50or60$ for my preference of choice ! Holds a decent edge for a spell sharpens easy enough. Ive cut 00 electric wire & other crazy stuff w/it ! Its been a contender & just 10$ bucks ! The sheath sucks on a few points & is already shot but damn good solid cheapie knife , I was shocked how good it actually is ! Definitely cant complain about it , ive paid alot more for a whole lot less before! Just need a quality sheath for it! I give it 👍👍👍

I own 3 of these....and two brown handles..... They're perfect for stashing away in various kits and places. They're not going to take the place of my Spyderco's, Gerber's (USA made ones), and Benchmade's.....but I definitely wouldn't sweat it if I had to get by with one of these. This and a small whetstone or rod....and I'd be OK in an emergency. I've put some grip tape (like floor grip gritty.....) on the area where the jimping would be.....and it helped a lot....as far as being able to apply more pressure when stripping bark.... whittling..... Etc.

Got mine two years ago. Used it at work and camping. Great for basic cutting and bush craft. Not so much for intense prossessing fire wood. The edge wears down easy. But cuts great when taken to a wet stone. For $10 very functional and gets the job done. 😉👍

This is a hunting knife. I would never use anything with a hollow grind on bushcraft tasks. The feather sticking would be terrible because the edge would bite too much and there's no way it could withstand batoning for any length of time without breaking. I'd say if you're cash situation is tight, save your pennies until you can get a real bushcrafting knife.
@escapetherace1943
@escapetherace1943 Жыл бұрын
I disagree. Hollow is the best all rounder and the spine of this blade is thick enough it can withstand bushcraft. Way better than a scandi knife because you can food prep with it and skin with it and also start fires with it and lord forbid baton with it decent. It puts my garberg to shame, which honestly isn't saying much, the garberg kinda sucks

I've owned both of these blades, the 2016/17 model (the brown handled version) and I currently own the 2020 model. I swore by the previous version for several years before I purchased the 2020 design, after which I gave away my previous Camillus to a former friend who was interested in survival. Both are really well made and very efficient, but I do prefer the 2020 edition just because it is a thicker blade and a mostly flat spine for striking a Ferro rod. But I could be stuck with either blade and be happy with it. I've used them both for everything from food prep to carving and batoning frozen wood for a kindling. Highly recommend both of these blades for anyone.

@lostintransit3359
@lostintransit3359 2 жыл бұрын
@@NotNuffKnives frankly, I've never had a better belt knife in my 30 years of life. It was probably the best knife I've owned for it's price. I spent winters batoning it through frozen wood without it so much as bending. It's a knife that I frequently recommend to others, from beginners to seasoned a woodsman. Unless you're prying with it or being unusually abusive to the blade, it will perform without a single issue. I even often practiced throwing it and only ever had to resharpen it, maybe stone out a nick in the blade from a rock. Best blade you could buy for the price
@NotNuffKnives
@NotNuffKnives 2 жыл бұрын
@@lostintransit3359 Exactly my thoughts. There isn't really a single thing I wouldn't pack this knife for except for prying jobs. And the re-spline curve is sexy as hell.
@lostintransit3359
@lostintransit3359 2 жыл бұрын
@@NotNuffKnives agreed, but I do love the new model more personally. It makes any batoning easier and less abusive to whatever your batoning with. It chews up any baton bad, but the new model has a straight and flat spine which is a definitely design improvement, and the ONLY flaw in the other model, the false edge tears up any baton in short work. Otherwise, it would be my favorite blade of all time. But the new model, it's classified as a trade knife design, is far more suited to heavy work for those of us who try to spend most of our time in the woods. But both are a top tier option for anyone. I'd go as far as I say it beats out Mora brand in price and durability when taken care of.
@NotNuffKnives
@NotNuffKnives 2 жыл бұрын
@@lostintransit3359 Agreed. Another good bullet point is I definitely love the naked satin finish since there is no coating to wear off with batoning.

They like to coat the blades with titanium carbo-nitride, which is a reasonably hard coating. Probably not as tough as DLC, but still good. I'm not sure a 440A or 7CR17 class stainless needs a coating, but there is nothing wrong with it. EDIT Addition : I think the coating color is adjustable by process. I assume they are using a clear coating in some cases. ** END EDIT. I found the front finger bump on the handle interfered with a standard reverse (chest lever) grip, so I cut it down some. There is sort of a hobby with YT camping/knife people to handle "I forgot my X. What can I get from WM to cover for the weekend?" . If "X" was "camp knife", then this knife or one of the medium sized Mossy Oak knives would be the under $20 answer. The under $50 answer would be the Buck 119 or the Gerber Prodigy. It's a fun game to play, because when you are 200 miles from home and forgot something and it is Sunday with all the knife/camping stores closed, then all you have is WM or maybe an Ace Hardware store. BTW, they carry a decent hatchet with a hickory handle (~$15) that just needs some blade profiling and some handle clean up.
