In one public Albergue along the camino Frances I had a situation where the Albergue was over full and accommodating people on floor mats in the commons area. I asked for a blanket and was told they had run out of them. I simply slept in all my clothes and was fine. This happened only one time and did not give me pause to carry a sleeping bag. Love the blanket idea.

Walked the primitivo in late August and took a synthetic 50 degree bag. Synthetic does not have the compression problem that down does and can be washed in hot water if needed due to bed bugs. Bag weighed same as my fleece liner at 1.1 lb and packed into stuff sack that was approx 4x7 in. Plus I never had to lay on paper sheets. So it can be done with a sleeping bag. Just need to find the right bag.

For camping I use a quilt which is as warm as a sleeping bag and half the weight. For the Camino I use a sleeping bag liner and have just invested in a silk one which is very light. I am a hot sleeper so staying cool is more of an issue for me.

Thank you so much for the tips on the bed bugs that's a great idea to use the premerthrin and the Liner. I have the liner. I was going to see if i could purchase a small bottle of bed bug spray too. I will definitely take your advice and spray my gear prior to me leaving for my trip.

You can get small bottles of permethrin or you can order larger bottles from Sawyer, spray your bag, and then transfer a small amount to a spritzer bottle. Be sure to spray in well-ventilated areas (ideally outdoors) and allow the areas to dry completely before contact with skin. Buen Camino!

The original question referenced walking in the summer months. Is your opinion to NOT take a Sleeping Bag on the Camino in the April/May (Camino Portugues) timeframe as well?

Thanks for the question. To be clear, I wouldn't take a sleeping bag in the Camino in any season, rather I suggest a down camping blanket or down camping quilt, with more down fill for winter months. The reason is a sleeping bag is essentially two quilts: one that covers you and one that goes beneath. Because you are sleeping in a bed rather than directly on the ground, you don't need thermal underneath. The extra "layer" beneath you from a sleeping bag is extra weight and extra bulk! For years on my pilgrimage walks and in hostels worldwide I've used the Sea To Summit Traveller bed liner, which is treated at the fabric level to be bug resistant. Can bed bugs burrow into the down sleeping blankets? Can bed bugs get into a synthetic blanket or sleeping bag? I have a down sleeping bag that weights 1lb. I was going to take that but I don’t want to get bed bugs in that can get into the down and everyone knows that down is not the easiest to wash, if this can be a possibility.

Great questions. Bed bugs can definitely burrow below the weave of sleeping bags (both down and synthetic). I would HIGHLY recommend treating your sleeping bag with permethrin as a good first step. You can also place your sleeping bag inside a treated liner, such as those by Sea to Summit. Buen Camino!

There are very few campgrounds and camping outside of designated spaces is not allowed. You may find churches or private homes that allow you to camp in their yard. Buen Camino!
