Camino Frances - Day 2
Roncesvalles to Larrasoana - 27km
We were up and about early trying not to disturb the ones still sleeping. I was just coming out of the shower block when all the lights came on and we were greeted by the volunteers at the Albergue singing a wake-up call. So much nicer than a bell or an alarm. What a great way to start the day.
It was a wet old morning, so on with the wet weather gear and we headed off. Very dark in the mornings so glad we packed head lamps. Well we were down to Jim’s - I had already misplaced mine - I think in Barcelona. We were both feeling well apart from slight sore calves which was a nice surprise
Just over the road from the Albergue was the start of the track and our first sign for Santiago De Compostela only 790km to go - not far now.
The walk was relatively easy compared to yesterday it still had its hills and downhills. We stopped at Zubiri for breakfast which was a delightful town where a lot of Pilgrims stay the night, we however had Larrasoana in our sights for the end of our day. Just as we headed out of Zubiri we were stopped by a guy who asked where we were from. He took our picture and I am sure you would find us along with other Pilgrims on his web page.
We arrived at Larrasoana and went in search of an Albergue. We used the Camino app which gives you a list of Albergues in each town so we already had in mind where we wanted to stay. Albergue San Nicolas was our choice.
It was wash day - we decided every second day would become laundry day, so with laundry done and hung out in the warm breeze we had a wander around the town and sought out the direction we were to be heading in the morning. Always a good tip to know which way to get out of the town the night before it can save you a headache in the morning trying to find the camino signs which are not always the easiest to find and especially in the dark. Just over the road from the Albergue was a small shop. They sold cold beer and wine they also had tables so you could sit and relax and enjoy a bevvy, which we did. They also had a variety of food to purchase.
Our host Nicolas was very welcoming and cooked a wonderful home cooked Pellegrino menu shared with an English couple. As the food comes out and the wine flows you strike up conversations with other Pilgrims. It’s good to hear where people are from, their reason for walking the Camino and the distance they are trekking. A lot of folks do the Camino in stages and everyone walks the Camino for their own reasons ‘Your Camino - Your Way’. Of course there is always something to banter about and tonight was the up and coming rugby world cup.
We were in a room with 2 bunks and were joined by a young couple from Finland whom we would see on and off over the next couple of days. Before bed it’s always good to check with your roomies about what time would be okay to turn on lights in the morning. These guys weren’t bothered that we wanted to make an early start however they were leaving later than us. We didn’t make it past 8:30pm before we headed off to bed, well feed and ready for a good night’s sleep.
