you can get a direct coach from madrid airport. There is 1 bus per day directly or you can get more coaches from madrid to pamplona then get a bus from pamplona to st jean.
@vamoalla96 жыл бұрын
If you fly into Biarritz, just look for other Pilgrims in the airport. Buddy up with them and split a taxi fare to St Jean. Easy.

Hello Lindsey,I love your videos! I walked the Camino in Sept/Oct. 2015 and had the time of my life. I took the train from Madrid to Pamplona and then took the bus to SJPdP, which worked out great. You could also bus from Madrid to Pamplona, which might be a bit cheaper. Keep up the great work!!!

Thank you so much Lindsey for all the reviews and gear lists, the travel suggestions you posted here were the ones I used to get my friend and I to and from the Camino this past Sept. I would add that to those who don’t speak any French, it might be helpful to learn or have on phone some basic French to enable one to read signage and find correct trains for transfers or gates exit signs etc. We found the train transfers to be chaotic with no English signage and not clear French instructions on our paperwork we printed in the US. Had it not been for many moments of serendipity (which happens a lot on the Camino,) we might’ve spent a very cold long night at a French train station. Just really want to thank you, Lindsey for all the Camino clips you’ve posted. Sure helpful. We both bought crossbody purses like yours (thanks to Poshmark,) and lush bars for hair/body. Would prob not go with the Lush bar again, as despite drying it out it stayed pretty mushy so was a tiny lump at the end. Also would stay away from the bars with colors in them as they bleed in the shower and on washcloths......(mine was purple...) we LOVED the Camino. I’d love to do any of the north routes and or the Portuguese. Make no mistake.....the Pyrenees are not the only hard part. It’s all hard and the hills never end....even the last few km before Santiago....are hills 👩🏻🌾🧚♂️🤦♀️

you're welcome! I bussed from Burgos to Astorga because I didn't think I could walk the whole thing. It's kind of the typical section to skip (or Burgos to Leon, Leon being two days further from Santiago than Astorga). If you have the time though I wouldn't bus through any sections. What I would recommend is if you're looking to avoid boring parts, take note of the "alternative scenic" routes. Brierly covers these well. Usually when there is an alternate, it is with good reason.

Your videos are awesome! I'm heading to Spain this summer for my 3rd Camino! The last two years, I did the Francés, and I have a suggestion for an alternate way to get to St. Jean if you fly into Madrid. You can get a train ticket from Madrid to Pamplona for about $90, and it's a little over three hours to get there. From the train station in Pamplona, you can actually get a cab to St. Jean. It's rather expensive (about €100), but you can share the cab. I went with two friends last year, and then a random pilgrim we met at the train station came in our cab and we split it. The drive was about 45 minutes. So, fo around $120, I got from Madrid to St. Jean with just under 5 hours travel time. This option might be more expensive, but it's REALLY convenient!
@bathedinridicule10 жыл бұрын
Great tips Darren, thanks for adding! I'd heard of that option too but thought a 10 minute video was probably long enough! Haha 3 Caminos in 3 years? Hook line and sinker eh? Buen camino my friend!

Hi M! I talked about cost a little bit in my video The Camino de Santiago for Dummies, it's a good place to start. Generally I'd say about 25 euros per day plus some contingency of course. That's assuming staying in hostels everyday and cooking for yourself or eating pilgrim meals and not spending too much on extra things. As far as guidebooks, the majority of English speakers carrying a guidebook are using John Brierly's guide. I don't carry one, I just use the list they give you...

As far as favourite albergues, honestly I don't know how to answer that. Some albergues are objectively nice because they are basically like hotels in comparison to others. Many more I remember fondly but probably more because I had a wonderful experience there, but that that experience was mostly dependent on the other pilgrims and the volunteers there at the time. I'll make videos soon about albergues, hopefully before you leave. Stay tuned.. and buen camino!! xx

You're welcome! Honestly I'm sure every former pilgrim has their own opinion. Loads of people walk in both seasons. I've walked in spring twice and loved it. I probably personally wouldn't walk in the summer because I'm not very good with excessive heat. But it's a personal choice. :)
@MALopez198310 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply back Lindsey. You are very helpful and informative. 25 euros a day seems manageable. im still unsure about what time of year would be best. summer or spring. Pamplona would be great in july for the running of the bulls.
@bathedinridicule10 жыл бұрын
I had only a few rainy days both times I walked in May, but not too bad. It's really a toss-up though, depends on the year. You'll totally be fine without French, if you can follow signs to track numbers at a train station then you'll manage. In Paris there's often English on signs too. If you can read Spanish you can more or less read French.

Cost from madrid to Bayonne no more than 90Dollar. thanks for the advise. i am still getting some stuff for my Bug out( my Mochila or Back Pack).

I'm leaving Wednesday for Paris, but took the easy (more expensive rout) by taking TGV from CDG (I didn't want to have to go into Paris to get a train out). My train ticket (last second) was pricey $160, but the peace of mind of only having to navigate from terminal 1 to the TGV in terminal 2 was my main reasoning. Hopefully the 2 hour gap will be enough to get me on that train! Cool video, definitely makes me feel better. GW

Dont you hv to go thru Gare Montparnasse in the middle of Paris to get on TGV, then another transfer in Bayonne ? Wouldnt it be simpler to fly to Biarist then share a taxi w others to St Jean..

@@RedHanded1969 If I could do it again I'd probably fly into Bordeaux then figure out how to get to Bayonne...that train ride from CDG was brutally long, especially after the long flight from San Diego.

What was stressful about it if I may ask? I find most travel in foreign countries stressful, myself. :P I almost lost my phone on a Portuguese train this time around, and got on a wrong train at some point because the arrival tracks had changed and I couldn't understand the Portuguese announcement. Hi Lindsey, I Thoroughly enjoyed your video. Very informative. It brought back good memories. I enjoyed mine so much I decided to write a novel about it. My novel is called The Catching of the Camino Wind has been published. It’s a romantic novel with the Camino as its setting. All who have walked the Camino will recognise the locations and Albergue’s mentioned. As well as a romantic novel it also a humorous look at the human condition. Here is its blurb: Avril is walking the Camino Francés in the hope of ridding herself of an inner demon that has cursed her young life when she meets Giovanni who has suffered a personal tragedy. He is in a dark place and needs rescuing. He had a dream directing him to walk the Camino. He undertakes it, but is an awkward and reluctant pilgrim. Riku, a Japanese zoologist, has his normally calm and relaxed nature shaken when he meets Ella; a Bulgarian Environmentalist with a carefree and cheeky disposition - Zeeta, a Parisian poet is out to discover the secrets of the universe but finds the philosophy of a Greek prison officer more appealing. Geordie is out to test his strength and mental agility to mark his seventieth birthday and discovers more about himself on the Camino that he had in his entire life. What do these pilgrims and others walking the Camino Francés have in common? What is it that binds them together, making them reveal secrets to each other they have never reveal to their closest friends or family? Could it be love or is it just the magical charm of the Camino effect? Be humoured, shocked and surprised by this unusual love story that blossomed on the road to Santiago. When you fly into Paris I saw a flight to Biarritz - would that work? One thing I'm wondering...if the flight arrives at 8:35 am and the flight takes off at like 10:50 am would i have enough time to get to the flight out if I'm going through customs? There's also a flight out of Orly to Biarritz but still not sure how long it take to get from one airport to another. Why did you choose train over a flight?
@bathedinridicule8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about those specific circumstances. I'm not exactly a travel planning expert haha! I chose train because I wasn't in a big hurry and I felt like taking a train and going a bit slower. Also, it allowed me to stop-over and visit some other cities along the way.

Hi Lindsey, first of all thank you for your videos. I find them really, really useful! I'm planning my camino in about a month and there is one very important thing for me that i can't seem to find answer to and hope you might help. It's internet access along the camino. Without getting into 'do-you-really-need-it' subject (yes, i do :) ), the question is: how good 3G coverage along the camino? Is it something to rely on? Thanks a ton!
@bathedinridicule10 жыл бұрын
Hi Domagoj, Thanks for the kind words! Really glad they helped you :) As far as 3G coverage goes, I'm afraid I have no idea! Coming from North America, I turned off data roaming on my phone to avoid astronomical costs, and just used WiFi when I found it. WiFi is everywhere - most albergues (almost all private albergues have it, at least, and many municipal) and probably at least half of the many many bars along the way offer free WiFi. Sorry I couldn't answer your question! Buen Camino!

Lindsy, thank you for your information to help all the new pilgrims to El Camino. We plan to start El Camino the second week of September 2015. Through reading some info. from other travelers, I have learned that the most direct and inexpensive way to get to St. Jean from San Francisco, CA is to go to Dublin, Biarritz, and then the train to St. James. Can you please tell me if this is the case. In addition, what do you recommend regarding flying back from San Tiago to Madrid, I mean how can we make arrangements for that return and purchase the tickets a head of time? Hey Lindsey. For my Camino trip this summer I will be flying into Paris and landing in the morning. I hope to make it to SJPdP as early as possible that same day. I will be pre-booking my train tickets. I'd like to catch the earliest train possible but before I book my train ticket I need to know how much time to allow for getting through customs and finding my way to the TGV. I'd appreciate any advice you might have regarding this. BTW, I've found all of your Camino videos to be very helpful. Thank you so very much.
@bathedinridicule8 жыл бұрын
+brianthemennonite I'm honestly not sure. I'm not positive if you would catch the TGV from the airport to Bayonne or if you would have to use the commuter train to get into Paris and then take the TGV from there. That's what I ended up doing last time but didn't do it all the same day, so I can't really give you any good advice on this. Sorry! Good luck

+Lindsey Cowie That's completely okay, Lindsey. I've kind of answered my own question anyway by doing a bit of searching around on my own. The TGV station is actually just one floor below the international arrivals terminal at Charles de Gaulle. Probably only need an hour transfer time. The train to Bayonne leaves right from there and is only a 6ish hour ride. And then only another hour to SJPdP. Thanks for taking the time to reply. You're a peach.

Good Day Lindsey!! I have been viewing your videos for a while now. From your first camino because you offer an honest insight into this amazing journey. I was curious, i see that almost everyone recommends that we fly into Barritz intead of Bayonne. Why is that? If the train goes from Bayonne to SJPP, why not just fly into Bayonne. Is it the expense? Anyway, would like your input. Keep putting up you helpful vids, they really are invaluable. Take care. Nora

Hey Nora, thanks for the kind words! Good question about the Bayonne/Biarritz thing. The reason is that as far as I know, there's no airport in Bayonne. Biarritz is the closest airport to St-Jean. :) So naturally that's where people fly. But I've never actually flown there myself... to me, there's something more exciting and romantic about a long train ride. Somehow it seems to fit better with the journey to the Camino. ;) Cheers! Stay tuned, new video within the next week or so. :) Lindsey

I am having a hard time picturing how we pass through different countries and how that relates to passport checks. If I fly into London and then have to get to SJPdP...very unsure about what to expect and how all that happens?

That was very helpful, Still not too sure to fly to Paris and then take the train or to get a coach to Paris, as on a coach I can carry the gas for my small primus. I'm guessing saint Jean has many outdoor shops? What's the best train station in Paris to get the train to Saint Jean from please.

+Lee Woodhouse Think I have better plan I found a flight to bayonne for £93 from Newcastle, to Southampton to Bayonne then from there 1 hour train ride Woohoo!!!
@bathedinridicule8 жыл бұрын
+Lee Woodhouse Haha good work! St-Jean does have a few small outdoor shops but from what I remember they are quite expensive. It depends what you're looking to get.

Yes I guessed that, I only want a small can of gas. I know it may be mad to carry it.... But I'm English and we need our tea lol xxx

FYI - I booked a late May 2016 non-stop one-way flight from Santiago to Paris (CDG) through Vueling for $115. I think this particular flight only operates on weekends. It's only a 2 hr flight! We'll need to get from CDG to ORY but that's a cheap bus ride away. I have seen a 1-stop flight from Santiago to Paris for as little as $45 (but not in late May).

So, flight to Paris then easy- jet from paris to Biarritz, then train from Biarritz to Bayonne, Does SNCF.FR have train direct from Biarritz to Sjpdp. do I have to take bus from Bayonne to Sjpdp?? Thanks
@bathedinridicule7 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, you have to go through Bayonne to get to SJPP by train or bus, unless that has changed in recent years. Check the Camino forum for the most up-to-date info.

hey Lindsey i stumbled across your videos and enjoyed hearing your good advice etc. i had heard about this walk before and now i am seriously considering doing it. just wondering why did you first do the camino? what are some reasons that people you met had for doing it other than religious reasons. this is something that interests me. i realize i have my own reason for doing such a walk. cheers, Gary
@bathedinridicule10 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary! I'm really glad you found them useful :) Well everyone has their own reasons. It's a common theme that people who are doing it are in some kind of transition in life. Many people have just retired. Some of us have just graduated university or high school and don't know what to do next. Some people have lost someone very important to them. Some people are very ill. Some people are making their peace with God. Some people just thought it would be a cool thing to do. And some people do it because they're addicted to the Camino. :P I personally did it the first time because I was in university but had no idea why, no idea what I wanted to do with my life, etc. And my dad had done it before, and said, why not go do the Camino? And so I did, and he decided to come with me. There's no right or wrong reason for wanting to do it. Pilgrims are accepting. Everyone is welcome. I'm glad the Camino has grabbed hold of you - we've all felt that call and trust me, it will only grow stronger! Buen camino my friend. Lindsey

That's cause it is! For some reason it's the thing that people seem to stress out about a lot. But really, there's nothing to worry about.

Hi GW! It's probably not that much more expensive to just go from CDG because presumably it stops in Paris anyway? If you have no flight delays you should be fine, CDG is well set up with plenty of signage. Good luck and buen camino!!

A bus from Pamplona to Saint Jean, www.alsa.es. During summer times they serve a broader range of scheduled trips. But I just wonder, why do pilgers have this hectic desire to stick to the so called rule of starting there!!!! En fin, I live in Pamplona and I don’t understand these weird pilgers! Greetings

Probably because the walk from St-Jean to Roncesvalles is beautiful in good weather! And feels cool to be able to walk over the border, hence being able to literally walk across the whole country. Cheers!

Lindsey the walk for me would be to pray with my feet as an act of penance, It would be seek redemption while searching for solace, did you see or experience anything that added wonder to the miracle of our short existence, or was a majority of it just the privileged spending money they never earned while trying to put meaning to an adventure that weighed heavily on money time and a lack of responsibility coupled with visits from lust greed and gluttony? Or does each pilgrim only find what they where searching for through internal dialogue and rationalization? Please answer this question with your heart and not cerebral. Show less

Most just fly to Paris, then a connecting flight to Biarist, and look for taxi buddies to St Jean.. Compare that to St Jean overland fr Paris, by having to do all these on foot in a foreign country, after a 20hr flight & jet lag: - transfer 4 diff trains, - buy 4 diff tickets, - looking for 4 diff stations, - make all the connecting train schedules.. Otherwise you could arrv at St Jean late in the night, after an additional 7hr train ride, and still hv to walk on foot in a small French town looking for lodging & food.. Not a good idea.. 😕
