One of the most compelling things about these lenses is that they fit full frame and look good. My go to for full frame anamorphic is the Orion with the atlas full frame expander. I’m in no way comparing these to an Orion, totally different beasts (although a surprising amount of similarities too). BUT When we want to shoot gritty anamorphic even if the client doesn’t require the Orion that’s still typically what I go with because it’s just the option that checks all the boxes we need. But for lower end clients, the Remus checks those boxes as well and we can buy a full set for the same price as a 4-5 day rental on a SINGLE Orion. Crazy times we live in!!!

This is why I prefer to watch your reviews, because you cut through the B.S. I see the focus breathing as more of a slight zoom in and doesn’t bother me at all, as you showed with DaVinci there are fixes for some things as well and I want these lenses even more now. Those that complain are just looking for anything to bitch about it seems. If they just want the clinical clean look and don’t like the character in these lenses then why are they watching an anamorphic lens review to begin with? Thank you for the video!

Man you're truly setting a new standard with these videos. Love the way you mix the review part with some truth bombs here and there. From what I've seen, general consensus seems to be that the 65mm is the sweetspot. Do you think it would be versatile enough to be used alone as an EDC or would you rather go for the 45mm and use clear image zoom to get some added reach here and there? Thinking of the Creator being mostly shot on a 75mm Kowa anamorphic.

I was literally looking into the mercury lenses from atlas a few weeks ago and then I noticed these lenses at an even lower cost. Kind of incredible time to be a filmmaker because these could pass as C series if you shot them right. A tip on the lens distortion bit from a VFX guy, you can shoot lens grids to accurately replicate and correct distortion to pinpoint accuracy. Just day before the shoot print one out on a big sheet of paper, but it in front of each lens and record a few seconds. In the Fusion tab of Davinci you get much finer control over the type of distortion including anamorphic squeeze options.

I've shimmed plenty of lenses before, but to do these I found I had to switch to 6:5 and turn on in camera sharpening to max, otherwise all I could see on 4x monitor magnification was blurred lines ;-) With the 100mm I did have to stop it down to T4 to be able to see the chart's lines clearly enough at 3.5m, but now its images are fantastic. Well worth spending some time doing this.

I seem to like the 1.5x stretch of the Remus vs the new Cato at 2.0x. Also with 16:9 UHD you would need to cut some of that extra "wideness" for standard cine aspect ratio. Also being able to slide in ND's and other filters in the back with the adapters is a killer feature as they're not as deep as other PL lenses. Thanks a lot for the amazing review and tips!

Thanks for taking your time to break down all the myths and chatter and show us real life usage examples of these lenses as well as some of your post processing tweaks. I was surprised to see the 100mm on the projector at T4. I think that lens has a lot of potential. For my usage, I'm still undecided between getting this set vs 2 Proteus lenses. My main concern is the funky edge on the 45mm but seeing how they clean up with a little bit of lens correction, kinda make me lean towards the Remus again. If only talking about the look. incl. flares, I think the Mecury's are better, but those are beyond my budget and out of all other available options the Remus removes the barrier to big budget looks like no other lens and I really love that!

Leftover from an unfeathered matte or from the lens? I would buy a anamorphic lens for the characteristics and extra horizontal FOV, and since I use s35 sensor (xh2s) I would belive buying a FF lens like this is not the best options as would loose a lot of the image characteristics near the edges because of the 1.5x crop, like its often softer or fuzzier and stuff near the edge, or Im I wrong? should you use s35 anamorphic lens to get all the "quirks" in the image circle of a s35 sensor compared to a FF lens?
@toneohm9 ай бұрын
right,, it should be overall sharper bc you're using more of the center of the lens with the S35 crop.., BUT.., if you decide to go FF at some point.., you'll already have a lens that can accommodate.., BUT..., if you're sure you're going to stay S35..., a dedicated S35 sized anamorphic lens would be of use to you.. it will be cheaper, likely smaller and less weight.. and meant specifically for your sensor size.. by nature, I like S35.., its what I grew up using.. its what cinema was built around, often leads to smaller lenses.., the main reason I like low light is for the dynamic range.. that's the main thing.. and achieving a wider field of view more easily.. the more shallow DOF.., I don't really care for.. S35 is plenty for that aspect.. So yeah, it all depends on which anamorphic lens in.. you could get a Laowa Nanomorph.. OR.. you could get a Vazen MFT.. (which is manage to do S35 in most cases) and that way.., you're using all of the Vazen's lens, so you'll definitely get the focus fall off that you're talking about.., whereas the Nanomorph.., even though its smaller, lighter, and cheaper than a Vazen.., its a much sharper lens all-round so its going to have a little more of the old anamorphic character and a lil more of the modern sharpness.. not to mention the stretch isn't as extreme as a Vazen.. and its convex.. not concave like most traditional anamorphics.. I do prefer barrel over pincushion.., but, its not the end of the world either.. Cooke's have pincushion and they're essentially the best cine lens optics ever imo.. along with Zeiss and Panavision
@cammackey9 ай бұрын
I agree a lot with the other comment. But I will say the nanomorphs don’t really have any character, Laowa went more for a clean look. Which is great if you like that! Vazen actually were making great lenses. Their 27mm was my fav S35 lens to this day. But if you’re planning on shooting s35 open gate on your Fuji, a 1.8 or 2X lens will suit you much better. Cause 1.5X on open gate is just basic 16x9

I currently own a Vazen 28 and really like the character, was looking to get a full set but now considering selling and grabbing a set of these instead - thoughts? Yet to see any comparisons between vazen and blazar

Have u ever used the lens distortion effect to fake anamorphic characteristics on a spherical lens?

Which lens flare did you choose? And which one do you recommend?

Blue all day! But honestly BLAZARs flares are pretty neutral overall

What type of diopter does it have for e close focus?

you wouldn't happen to know whether these can cover a larger sensor? (not according to spec, but in practice)

They cover my MAVO Edge 6K when it's OG (LF 3:2) just fine 🤷♀

I’ve been hoping someone will compare & contrast the Remus to the Atlas Mercury .. even if it’s just a description of personal experience / not technical. Is the cost of the Atlas justified if you’re an anamorphic enthusiast?
@cammackey9 ай бұрын
If I’m shooting a project with a decent budget, I’d rent the Mercurys for it. If there’s no budget, I would happily use the Remus.

Hey, good video. I’ve had exactly the same experiences with the set. But one thing that might be falsely implied in your current thumbnail: the lenses are not waterproof.
@cammackey9 ай бұрын
Well I never said they were haha. I made a reel saying so.

Wow, 3:00 looks insanely great. Which focal length was it tho? Was it shot on the FX3?

Dude even your car interior is orange and teal!!! Have you paired the Remus yet with an open gate camera? I’ve been thinking about pairing with the Pocket 6K Full Frame open gate

I have! It reads out as 16x9 tho so it’s a little weird on the brain haha

Would you use these with a speed booster on the Red Komodo X or would that not work? Thanks!

I've read that the PL mount versions always need some shimming but the EF mount versions do not - anyone know if this is true?
