Great video, and a nice way to add some colour to a mini. Also I'm guessing you used an airbrush for the main grey colour of the mechs. Any tips for getting those really nice highlight (zenithal?) gradients, it's pops so nicely. I'm trying to recreate a similar effect with a purple Marik scheme.

Thanks, I pre-highlight with my airbrush using grey and white over a base primer of black to establish my zenithal baseline. Then you can use thinned colors to keep those underlying highlights to help with the gradient. Use very thin paint and go slowly. It takes practice and I've not done it enough to feel like I'm very consistent with it yet but the more I do it, the easier certain stages progress. Check out Kenny Boucher's channel "Next_level_Painting" on youtube and twitch, he's got lots of airbrush work that will really show you how to pop colors out.

Easy to cover yellow with black, not so much the other way around. So you can save yourself some work by simply painting the whole surface yellow first and just cut in the black lines over that. That way you're only freehanding the stripes one time. Also for people struggling to paint a straight line if you angle the model so that you're pulling the brush straight toward you generally you have a lot more control. Steep angle, using almost the side of the brush and basically 'dragging' the brush will stop you from having to fight with the tip of the brush squirreling and mechanically it's just easier to maintain a straight line when pulling toward you.

I agree the yellow then black works but yellow is fickle over anything but light colors which is why I showed the brown undercoat step. Additionally if you make an error and get too much black in a spot, you're having to put yellow over black. The steps I showed were to provide a demonstration that allows for corrections as well as ways to get a bright yellow without as much of an uphill battle.

I like to coat the entire area with the yellow, then just draw the black lines at their respective angles, that way it creates that black and yellow angles in one step. I never thought to put a base color down to help the yellow have a better base though. I'm going to have to do that from now on.

What are you using as your palette? Just regular paper? I've never seen that before :) Is that what you normally use, or is that just so we can see what colors you are using as you work?

It's Strathmore artist's palette paper available from art supply stores or online stores. I use it because it lets me thin down paint easily and one whole sheet gets me 4 when I quarter them so it's easy cleanup.

Thanks. The Shadow Hawk is the new sculpt available from either Iron Wind Metals in metal or in plastic in the new box set. The Dragon is a much older sculpt in metal.
