I'd like to point out that David has outright said he always tries to see the good in things. So he's not being stupid. He's being naïve and optimistic, because he's hoping the Campbell he looked up to as a kid will come back. Unfortunately that's not going to happen since Campbell was always a horrible person. If he was actually stupid, he would've been fooled by Campbell's "disguise", which he wasn't.

I think what makes season 3 better is the developement with Max and David, especially with Max like at first he wanted to get out of the camp but now he freaking saved the camp 2 times now, we really need to give the boy a star for improvement.

Right? And I think that may constitute to how David and Gwen has more care in him than his own parents do. Like I said, he owns this. Without him, David would be screwed and Camp Campbell would be shut down. I am just loving Max's development throughout this show.

Max was already less of an asshole towards David in Season 2. The creator of this show has expressed his annoyance with stories that keep pushing the reset button on character development, like High School Musical.

And to be honest I kinda see developement with David's character too, like at first he seems like this jolly pure ignorant man and now while he is still a very positive and nice person we see more of his serious side. I just love character developement it's the perfect way to make a character better.

This adds more my stupid theory that "David was like Max. Neglected." I'll try to keep it short. Okay, so still remember "Order of the Sparrow", "Cult Camp", "Jasper Dies", and "Parents' Day" episodes? Order of The Sparrow : - David is not naive. Just wanted to look positive in cruel reality, completely opposite from Max, the nihilistic. He had to be optimistic for the sake of campers. If he is being realistic, then camp will all be depressing and campers will leave instantly. Heck, he even cursed. Someone had to be a sunshine. - In dream sequence, Campbell said "I'm your real father!", and I thought that Campbell is the only one who acknowledged David, unlike his parents. It'll be explained more in "Jasper Dies" part. - Afterwards, he was actually surprised that campers cared enough to have bonfire, even Max, meaning he's not often to be heard by others. Cult Camp : - Daniel and Max are both manipulative. Max used David's desire for Campbell's acknowledgement on his accomplishments, and one of the line in the song "Better than you", Daniel said "You're just nobody!". Both actually supported that shows David felt like he's nobody and wanted someone to notice him, acknowledge his existence. Jasper Dies : - David used to be like Max. - At almost of the end, when Cameron gave him a badge, David shone up and changed his view, finally found someone acknowledged his work, so that began craving more of Cameron's attentions to him by trying his best to be best camp counselor "like him". He also began to love camping, so he thought maybe "camping" will cheered them up and wanted others to feel it what like how he felt Parents's Day: - David didn't ask of how Max's parents treated their child, or even ask why, but he knew of what to treat him. David really felt guilty of how he yelled at Max, so the way to calm the already overwhelmed neglected child, who has views that everyone will be asshole and no one will care to his troubles, is to show what he didn't expect - care and acknowledgement. - David's speech. - "I'm sorry of how your parents treated you. You deserved better." - The fact that David is not smiling, and even Max surprised of how he speaks might've show that one who is speaking, not the camp counselor, but as someone who can understand Max's problems, AKA David, the one who had been through the same. - He said it is his job in "Cameron Campbell the Camp Campbell Camper". But he did hesistate of what he should do - Getting Cameron's acknowledgement, or Max's needed care. There is more, but... I guess I can't say it is stupid... David still has that view of positivity, and he still denied Cameron didn't care until well...
