Great cast, indeed, and Oliver Reed's last film. Every time I see him on screen I'm reminded that he died during a filming break. He promised Ridley Scott months before filming that he wasn't going to drink ( he was off and on the wagon for years) while shooting the film but he lied. His work around was drinking on weekends and while on break from filming Gladiator, he challenged some English sailors to a drinking contest in a pub where he shouldn't've been. He collapsed, an ambulance was called and he died en route to the hospital. What a film to have a great performance for what would be his last one.

That reminds me of the swordfight between Ricardo Montalban and Frank Langella in the TV movie version of "The Mark of Zorro." During the fight Langella compliments Montalban on a technique saying "I've never seen that move before" and Montalban replies "You wouldn't. I learned on the battlefield." Even though Frank Langella is good actor and ably played Zorro/Diego de la Vega, I actually thought Ricardo Montalban was more charismatic as Capt. Esteban Pasquale.

At 40:03 you hear one of the gladiators state: "i served with you at Vindobona". It was to show Maximus' soldiers loyalty. He knew who Maximus was, and knew he was in hiding and didn't out him. Historically the empire had multiple standing armies, each of them more loyal to their generals than the empire itself. This ended up leading to many civil wars with each army fighting to kill off the others

Imagine committing an act so powerful that the entire Roman coliseum goes quiet enough to hear a pin drop. Also, Quintus didn't betray the emperor. He never wanted to do any of this to Maximus at any point. But Quintus knew that if he didn't carry out the orders, someone else would have and his family would have been included in them. In the end, Quintus was allowed to show his support for Maximus simply by honoring the coliseum and the conditions of the challenge. Gladiators die with honor, false emperors do not.

The actor who played Proximo (the Gladiator trainer) was Oliver Reed. He was an extraordinary british actor, with a very interesting, fascinating and atypical life. He also was known for his alcoholism, having some scandals on TV and cinema as a consequence of this. During the filming of Gladiator in 1999, he sadly passed away. He had been sober for months, but one night (during a break from filming the movie) in an Irish pub in Malta (after a bet), he drank three bottles of Jamaican rum, eight bottles of German beer, numerous double whiskeys and challenged five young English sailors of the Royal Navy to arm-wrestling at The Pub bar (which after this incident was called Ollie's Last Pub). His bill, which was never paid, is preserved in a decorative frame in the bar.

Marcus Aurelius kept his plan to install Maximus secret. That's why Commodus killed him, so it would never get out. Love me some Michael and Steph duo! The only thing I’m having a hard time with is Michael sitting on the left and Steph on the right😂😂😂 it’s throwing me off

Nice work you 2, THis won Russell Crowe his Oscar and good guess on the music score, but it was Hans Zimmer who did it and he has many other scores that are epic too.

This played in theaters recently. I took a gen Z friend who was too young and he was blown away.

He’s not mentioned enough, but Oliver Reed really does give it his all in his last performance. That scene where he’s recalling his days in the arena and his voice trembles “…like a storm… like you were the thunder god himself….”

Great reaction. Not John perfection Williams but the second best musical director in this world Hans Zimmer. Those two men have elevated cinema beyond this world. I went and saw this movie 6 times in the theater when it was released. The scene of entering the Coliseum with surround sound was epic. It is only the second movie I ever saw more than once on the big screen. Moulin Rouge was the other. Much love and keep on keepin on J.

Great reaction! (I have seen several for this movie, and I think yours may be the best.) They chained "red" guys - who would be the ones to put up a good fight - with "yellow" ones - who would probably not last long. Thus Maximus was paired with Juba.

Amazing movie. Great cast all around. And Phoenix plays his part to perfection. Really a force here. So many great scenes between Commodus, Lucilla, Maximus and Marcus Aurelius. The ending also leaves no man untouched. Maximus wading through the field towards his home on the other side - reunited with his family.
