For pour over, look at the OXO pour over brewer. Costs more like $15, but it has a water reservoir that does the dripping for you. Makes a remarkably consistent cup of coffee. A bit bulkier with the reservoir but it’s so simple to use it’s worth it. The OXO is what I use at home. I used to use a french press, which makes a better cup of coffee but is too much of a pain to clean up. If I wasn’t on septic I would use the french press and just rinse the grounds down the garbage disposal. Also, don’t discount Starbucks Via packets when camping. They make a pretty good cup for instant.

This my go to!! Works every time, no matter where you are. As long as you have the workings. Still takes 2 pots, haven't tried as 1 I'm not sure how much the finish would hold up to heat. Wishing for the best caffeine experience!😀

This Pressa is neat. We have never seen this before. We just rented an Escapod trailer the last few days. They had a similar press onboard with the rental. It was insulated, but huge. It looked like it was designed more for a family. Seemed like a neat concept. But, we never had the time to try it out. Sounds like there is an invention waiting for you to make Mark. A version where you can heat it directly on the stove. I would buy it!
@devinbraun18523 жыл бұрын
I’m way late watching this, but love the topic. First off, I love the GSI mugs; cheap, nice insulated cozy, functional lid, light weight, graduated volume marks. Backpacking, I use a collapsible silicone pour over funnel by Sea-to-Summit, with pre-ground coffee. If I’m in a real hurry in the AM, I just use a few Starbucks Via instant packets - I’ll sometimes dump one of these in a brewed coffee if it comes out a little weak. If car camping, my go-to is a stainless steel percolator pot; mine is by a brand called Coletti. I use a Mueller hand grinder. I also have a Stanley thermos rolling around my truck that has a French press insert. If I’m in a hurry And don’t want to wait on water to percolate, I’ll just quick boil and pour in this thermos over some grounds.

French press. Look... I love coffee, and yes I'm a snob about it with my fancy schmancy espresso machine at home. But when I'm camping, I find the French Press is the easiest, tastiest way to brew coffee. No changing filters, no gazillion different parts, boil some water, throw in some good ground beans, whatever your favorite company is. Wait 3 to 7 minutes depending on what your own taste is. Done. Dump, rinse, wipe, put it away.
@theSpiritScribe Жыл бұрын
I think I have it very easy, because I only enjoy LATTE MACCHIATO. I get those To-Go instant espresso sticks, heat a cup of milk, mix the instant espresso with cold water (yes that works just fine), put everything together, add sugar and BOOM, done. Now, I know, I know I'm a coffee heretic, but I'm the only one in my small family drinking any sort of warm beverage in the morning, so that's how I do it. Because our van lacks a "real" kitchen I always have my backpacking canister stove thingy with me. Heats my milk just fine and that much of a flame is absolutely safe on our indoor table. Of course I stay with it every single second. I do have a ten-year-old, after all. ;) Anyways, maybe that helped someone. Have fun on your trips!

It all depends on your need, speed, and tastes. The Esbit stove- These tiny aluminium folding stoves will fit in pockets, glove boxes, where ever, many are made so you can have 4-6 solid fuel tablets stored inside the closed case. open the case, open one tab, open up a folding cup, add water, light the tab put the cup ontop of of the stove, you've got a cup boiled water in a few minutes, then you can add instant coffee, tea bags, or instant soup. This option works in the field, as a stop option while driving, doesn't require anything special. I actually carried one in the pack on my little motor bike for longer road trips. The big point here is there isn't "waste" of grounds and used filter. you just have the package which you can crumple up and pocket to throw out. Yes i know some people hate instant, but at times its the simplest option. Option 2 for me, I actually do the larger Metal Peculators. old fashion, 6 cup, put in the filter, add the coffee. Drop it on the fire, on the grill, on the burner, on the wood stove. cook the coffee, then move it to the side to keep it warm Then of course there are the 12v coffee makers, honestly not a fan of most of those, cuz a lot of them use the glass coffee maker jugs, and to me, the less glass in the back of a camper/truck the better. Finally, again, i don't use, but there are USB portable Espresso machines and portable Kpod cups. Again not my thing...but anything thats USB powered, that can be charged off a solar pack, off a USB Battery and such, might be of interest for those doing semi-off grid/or just want to have something different. BTW since your in canada, don't forget to stop at Tim Hortans.

@PlayingwithSticks3 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the 2nd one. We highlighted it in another video so I tried to keep it short. I realize now I made this too short. For the second one the instructions suggest adding 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of coffee to the metal filter. You then attach the clear cone and pour water in a circular motion around the cone. It takes about 2-3 minutes for the water to slowly work it's way through the coffee. Very similar to making regular drip coffee. I didn't add any opinions to this video, but subjectively I think the aeropress tastes the best.

Another easy method using the pot in your gear: Boil water in it, take off fire, add coffee grounds. After steeping, splash a little cold water on top to settle grounds. Pour off coffee into your cup(s), leaving behind (most of) the grounds. Not bad coffee and you can enjoy chewing the grounds. Learned this from my dad long ago. He learned it from his prospector father and grandfather, who liked to keep the gear simple.

I don't think it's you. I have the GSI Rocket as well, and I've never been able to get a good cup of coffee out of it. I noticed that at the bottom of mine, there's a small gap between the blue plastic circle and the surrounding metal filter that's allowing the water to pass right through. Even with adjusting the grind, I always end up with a watery cup of joe. My go-to has been the GSI Outdoors Java Drip with a #2 paper filter. Super easy cleanup and ultralight for backpacking. Omg - the mosquitos on your neck and arm!!!! I was yelling at my screen for you to swat the things! Lol :)

This is probably the easiest camp table to find not only online but in person. Basically it’s made in the same factory somewhere overseas and then everybody just puts their brand on it over here in America. You can find it at Walmart, Cabela’s, almost any store that has a camping section.
@ziptiefighter Жыл бұрын
As a coffee nerd, I was wondering if you were gonna include the Aeropress. Even the standard aeropress (AP) is ideal for decent java when traveling. Some small hand grinders (the Knock Aergrind, for example) will fit inside the standard AP's plunger. The standard AP is portable and damn-near bombproof. And its paper filters result in a clean cup and can be reused multiple times and eventually composted. Also, if you dispense the whole beans into a cup and then give 'em a stir with a slightly wetted spoon (or even your wet finger if you're ok with that)...this negates static generated during the grinding process and makes for less mess. Also, kudos to the "James Gang" ...if you know your Joe Walsh :D This was a solid feel-good vid. Cheers 👊 *sub'd!

@@PlayingwithSticks A drill sounds like a good idea, but I just dont know. I would try it especially on a dual axel with check stops to monitor. Obviously trying with the smallest drills/rasps and going up as needed.

I use a camp percolating coffee pot on the camp stove! I don't want to make one cup at a time.
@Ess_Chalk3 жыл бұрын
Inverted method Aeropress is definitely the easiest way to get a delicious mug of coffee at the campsite but a moka pot is a close second. I find a french press too difficult to clean and pour over really needs a thermometer and timer for consistent good quality, which makes it a bit fiddly. If you want espresso, the Nanopresso is a simple and robust and it has adapters for various brands of coffee capsules too but if money isn't a factor, the Bellman CX25P allows you to get great (true) espresso and delicious sweet steamed milk without electricity.
@PlayingwithSticks3 жыл бұрын
Moka Pot? That sounds interesting. Looking it up now. Okay, you know your stuff. Looking up the Bellman as well. True espresso without electricity sounds amazing!

Get a Bialetti Stovetop Espresso Maker, grind them at espresso setting, never look back. (and if you have a power station, get yourself something like a PARIS RHÔNE Milk Frother and Steamer)

Boil the water in your Stanley I see you have, rolling boil, pour the coffee in and use the is either Basingo or Lixada? Coffee press, just the press, about $10 in Amazon, fits perfectly in the Stanley and pour coffee, easy to wash too and comes apart if you wish to save space. Now you can have french press coffee in the woods for you and your wife.

I have never been very tech savvy with this sort of thing. Luckily this one is really easy because there is nothing out there. When you go across the border into Canada (the border that is near Tok Alaska). There will be one store on the left hand side and one on the right. The James store will be on your right.

Get a CLEVER DRIPPER, most of your problems are with the hand grinder. the CLEVER DRIPPER will solve that because you can grind a lot larger. It would take a whole page to explain, but it is the best way to go.

When I saw that screw all the way in, I knew. It didn't screw it self in and it isn't likely it got pressed all that way in. I've had plenty too - sometimes accompanied by a keying of a part of my car body bear that tire someone's not even letting me think it's a random event. In my cases it's often a nail that's had it's tip snipped off. Then placed where it'll be pressed in when I drive off. But that big blunt tip screw must of almost needed a guide hole drilled to get it started in. I've gone ahead and learned how to do the cheapie external plug you can get a kit for six bucks at Walmart. If a plug starts leaking THEN I'll replace the tire - maybe with a used one. I'm not going to let the bastards bankrupt me too. Coffee? Boil water in sauce pan. Heat to boil then turn off. Pour through strainer or filter into mug.

I was a little skeptical at first too. It would have almost been an act of God for all the variables to line up perfectly for that to happen. I like your coffee method. Simple is key!
