Even thought I don't set the parking brake it is proper to do so. The only thing holding the truck is a small pin that's why when you take it into gear it clunks when on a hill cause the pin is being stressed. So yes! you should listen to your wife.

I always set the parking break first and let the truck catch on the brake instead of all the weight sitting on the tranny. Nothing worse than that big clunk out of park.
