We are working on Campagnolo Super Record bottom bracket (BB) set on our 1988 Favorit F1 Super Special, the best racing bike from the communistic Czechoslovakia. The bike frame is made from Reynolds 531 tubes. You can use this video as a tutorial on how to disassemble and exchange grease in the BB set. All steps, along with the Campagnolo tools, are shown (only some moments are sped up).
Hope you enjoyed this video. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions/comments. Please SUBSCRIBE and help us grow our channel by sharing.

I rode top of the line Campy and Shimano cranksets with tapered bottoms for years (Road and MTB) but did myself a big favor and switched out their tapered bottoms brackets and replaced them with Phil Wood sealed cartridge bottoms and cups. These these things last for ever and pretty much never have to be maintained or adjusted even through rain and mud. I have some that are decades old and spin better than when they were new. Another reason to get them is that they have over sized tapers which allows crank arms that have bottomed out on traditional tapers to be reused again (this happens quite often if the crank arms have been removed and installed numerous times). They are set and forget items and if they ever go bad they can be re-serviced by the factory for minimal cost. They come in a multitude of axle widths, taper styles, and threading and are highly recommended even if a bit pricey (saves much effort, time, and dollars in the long run). That being said if you are going to use traditional taper bottom brackets I would suggest: 1) that you make sure that the tapers and crank arms are completely free of lubricants and grease before attaching them (you want an air tight metal on metal friction connection). 2) that you attach the DRIVE side crank arm only first and then use it as leverage to check bearing play (it is much easier to adjust the bearing cup on the other side with the other crank arm not attached). The last thing you want to do is tighten down the other side crank arm and then have to remove it to adjust the cup as your crank arms wear out some every time they are tightened down on the tapers. 3) that you always check the axle bolts and tighten them slightly after the first few rides (if the crank arms start to come loose you can ruin your crank arms as they start to wobble on the axle tapers. Remember that the axles are hard metal and the crank arms are much softer metal so you want a tight connection on all four sides. The softer crank arms will deform over time sliding down the axle tapers until they bottom out on the tapers if they are removed and attached too many times. Once they bottom out they will not make a clean attachment any more and will start to wobble wrecking the crank arms. 4) once the axle bolts have settled and you can no longer tighten them after a ride you have a clean air tight friction connection and the crank bolts are not even needed anymore. They used to sell super light anodized colored aluminum crank bolts that I would use instead of the original steel ones as they looked nicer and no longer had any stress on them. 5) that you might invest in some high grade bottom brackets tools that do not go around the cup lips and will not slip off the cups when removing or tightening them and scratch your frame. 6) thin wall sockets and a ratchet work better for removing and attaching the axle bolts and allow more leverage. 7) be sure to tighten the crank puller into the crank arm (that is why the flats are there) before you you torque down on the removal bolt.

Well, you described it beautifully, thank you. For vintage bikes, I use the original BB because that's how it's supposed to be.

I rode the old Campy stuff. I always adjusted the fixed cup with the frame off of the stand to get more leverage. I also recall using a plastic sleeve that protected the axel and bearings from crude and flakes that may be knocked loose from inside the frame. Some frames often had bottom bracket cutouts that may let water in. I believe at some point the Campy axel had threads that repelled dirt when peddling forward. And of course just the opposite when you back-peddled.

You are right! We don't use the plastic sleeve anymore because we won't ride the bike in rain. :-)

@@OnRoadVintageBikes I never biked in the rain by choice either, but back then I still used the sleeve. And it was a pain to work with. I recently got a Chorus 12 for my Pinarello and I've got an experienced Campy guy to lean on. I still miss working on Basso, Benotto, and Klein.

Great video! Today I did the same job on my dad's campagnolo bike, but it has a clear rubber tube and a plastic cone wich I took out to wash all properly. Now, the pedals axle and bearing were a test of faith to re assemble... I learned the hard way after multiple cursing moments to Campagnolo 70's designers 🤣. Do you have a video of that part?

Thank you very much. Plastic cover I know , but I do not use it ... I don't drive when it rains :-) . Do ou mean a video about disassembling and mounting campagnolo pedals? Not yet...

@@OnRoadVintageBikes exactly, that little axle with 12 bb at every side... It took me a while to put the outer cone without disturbing the bearings, it dragged the little balls every time I tried to tighten it. Wasn't evident the first hour 😑

Hello. Thank you for the video! I'm wondering: If you remove the small chainring from the Campagnolo system and leave only the large one, will the clamp bolts be able to clamp one large chainring without the small one?
@OnRoadVintageBikes
@OnRoadVintageBikes 2 жыл бұрын
It is possible, you just need shorter screws or washers instead of a small chainring. Thank you for support.

I only use original Gipiemme grease on my vintage Campy bearings. How is that Motorex stuff as a substitute? It looks the right colour and consistency. Even Gipiemme grease is getting hard to find- forget about Campagnolo, for any sensible price!

At 5:25 he examined the spindle but did not explain why. The spindle is longer on one side and needs to be put in correctly. Can you please explain this?
@OnRoadVintageBikes
@OnRoadVintageBikes 4 жыл бұрын
Correct, one side of the spindle is longer. The longer side of the spindle goes toward the chainwheel. Does this answer your question?
