It's really sad that the suicide rates for people in the hospitality/food industry have been on the rise since 2016. It really didn't hit the spotlight as being a known problem until Anthony Bourdain took his own life. Kat Kinsman started a group/site called Chefs With Issues, and having been a chef for most of my working life, its been a major lifesaver for myself and a lot of the other chefs I've worked with. @@chuyuen441 I wish I had verifiable answers for that. All I can really offer is what I've noticed from my 15 years of being a chef and working in kitchens. Being a chef isn't sunshine and daisies. Its hard, it is exhausting, and it can be really unrewarding at times. It can and probably will kill your social life. Most of all it is incredibly stressful. Stressful mentally *and* physically. I have seen what this industry can do to people, its why I left it before it completely destroyed my body. And there's a lot of us who still love it, mind. I still miss it every day. On top of that, restaurant workers in general have the highest incidences of alcoholism and the third-highest drug abuse rate amongst all professions. That has its own issues that they throw into the already complex, bubbling stew that is a human. Maybe its just more noticed thanks to social media, sites like youtube or reddit.

Unfortunately many talented chefs who open restaurants are not good at business and cannot afford to hire a qualified restaurant manager. Equally as important as the quality of the food is being versed in labor costs, food costs, spoilage control, food margins and break even costs. Without controlling these areas yiu have no chance.

Yup. Working in a grocery store taught me a lot about spoilage and such. I would always take a look and see what other areas had to shrink out when I was doing my own batches. I'd have one or two things in the supplement area, but meat, produce, deli, and bakery would have massive numbers compared to mine. It also taught me how much of a bitch it is to track all that stuff to the point I had to teach myself Excel in order to get a handle on it.

As a former restaurant owner along with my brother, it takes two to make it work. I was in charge of the operations, the kitchen and the front staff. My brother took care of the back-end stuff, the financial side of things from taxes, paying bills, payroll, permits, marketing, etc. Even then it was too much that’s why we sold it.

When people start taking men's issues seriously instead of being told as males to "get over it or "grow up," maybe that wouldn't be such an issue. This is why suicide rates are significantly higher in men because our health issues whether they be mental or physical are largely ignored, all I ever see is emphasis on women's health and pink ribbons, that's great, too bad it doesn't apply to men. Where's the blue ribbons for us? None.

If you really study Gordon Ramsay, you can see that he's a good man. He really tries to help people, and he gets upset himself when others are upset and down on themselves. He's a father to 6 children, and he's so sweet to kids and elderly people especially. He's a very busy, successful man who is under tremendous pressure, but he can still be kind. Sure he has a temper and a potty-mouth, but he is fair with his judgements. It's terrible that he has been dragged into this other man's tragedy 😢

I work in the restaurant business - about to go to work as I'm writing this, in fact - and it's definitely not a glamorous lifestyle. Strenuous work when in a rush and you feel like you're not earning enough for the amount of work you're putting out during these rushes. It does a toll, but I'm overall proud of my work. I hope that other people in the restaurant business, especially chefs, find healthy ways to deal with their stress, because it's becoming a real struggle with constantly increasing prices in rent and food.
@LadyPhoenix6211 ай бұрын
Many people who start their own business have no idea the stress that comes with it. Businesses have natural ups and downs and just being the owner can be majorly stressful. Adding a failed marriage and drug use can only amplify things. My sympathies for his family.

I was a bartender and server at a place in downtown Chicago, and one thing I was very proud of was everything was made in house and the staff was great. Never long wait times and almost NEVER was anything sent back. And when it was it was usually just down to taste preferences. But absolutely everything was made in house. Nothing was ordered in. And we used quality ingredients. That makes all the difference.

Blaming Gordon is also horrible for another reason: There was an episode of the UK kitchen nightmares where Gordon found out that the chef had a drinking problem and Gordon did his best to make sure to help the guy. But the chef hid from him that the drinking was more serious until it was too late. Gordon pointed out that if he had known it was that serious, he would've taken a different and more gentler approch. And he recommended the chef to quit the business and take care of himself. The chef later said in interviews that Gordon booked him into therapy and he is now sober thanks to that. With those stuff in mind, would you really think Gordon would ignore Joseph's mental health problems?

@@RealityTVRescues Oscars. It's the first episode of season 3. One of the more somber episodes but heartwarming in hindsight knowing the chef is in a better place now
It's obvious that his problems started well before Gordon. During the part of the episode where they give out samples, you can see horrific self-harm scars on his arms, the kind that indicate not just cutting, but a likely suicide attempt via cutting.

See, these people are a great example of a good thing taken too far. It's perfectly okay to have a more relaxed and casual atmosphere in the workplace. It helps to reduce stress on your workers, as well as reduce the likelihood of interpersonal clashes, which might hinder the work being done. I know I get better work done when I'm in a comfortable and friendly environment. That being said, taking it too far and making it feel more like a hangout spot between friends than a workplace just sends all the positive aspects of a more relaxed environment right down the shitter.
