Matt. Can you do a video on how to set up and use the iStroboSoft tuner. And understanding the hertz readings?
@moellersworkshop21164 жыл бұрын
Yes, "reed psychology" forces you when 'gone sharp again' strikes to either fiddle with reed in seat or futz with drones, or pray that the offset isn't noticeable (but it always is) This quick-tweek option is pure gold.

Good idea on the band video. Unfortunately, tough to make now that the band is on hiatus... I'd like to make that one like "in the moment" rather than me sitting on a chair talking about it. I wonder when we will be able to safely get back together here in the States.

Hi Matt, you tend to use a cane reed, don't you like the plastic reeds, I've had great success with a Frazer Warnock reed, but don't come cheap, very much liked this video.
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
I wasn't aware of Frazer making synthetic pipe chanter reeds, but perhaps they do. In any case, the few synthetic pipe chanter reeds I've tried were horrible, so I'll stick with cane. That said, all of my practice chanter reeds have been plastic. Never needed to experiment with a cane practice chanter reed to get a good sound.

@MattWillisBagpiper3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, I haven’t tried either Campbell B♭ chanter not the G1 B♭ reeds… both however are solid companies, so I imagine they’d work. In my experience, many B♭ chanters work best with standard chanter reeds. B♭ reeds can sometimes bring the pitch down a bit too far.

In our temperament, they are all fractions, as follows: 9/8 of 480Hz is B (540Hz) 5/4 of 480Hz is C♯ (600Hz) 4/3 of 480Hz is D (640Hz) 3/2 of 480Hz is E (720Hz) 5/3 od 480Hz is F♯ (800Hz) 7/4 of 480Hz is G (840Hz) Hope that helps!

Bought a ab chanter for me pipes (maclellan for 50$ ) I pulled the reed from my dunbar poly and put it in the ab... tuned with brawl( moved the bridals a hair to tighten the tounges)and sounded awesome.. too excited to be thinking numbers, but a few days later I noticed the low a (456 in the poly) was 478 now Musically speaking freely,, meh ,sounds good .. but numbers I'm now between the A#4/Bb4 and the B4? .. I've heard diferent drone reeds were needed for key of A vs B ? But also with the amount of play room we have on a drone reeds tunning screw and the sliders it puzzles me why I'd need diferent reeds? Am I making sense or have I fallen off the turnup waggon 🤯
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
I assume you purchased a B♭ MacLellan chanter (no one makes an A♭ chanter, at least to my knowledge!). I've never been able to get regular drone reeds down to 466/B♭... I've always needed either extenders (which tend to fall out) or custom 466Hz reeds (currently have a set of Ackland B♭ reeds). You'l definitely need custom reeds for A=440, but that again is yet a different chanter.

@Matt Willis Bagpiper omg.. I feel dumb lol..I'm so relieved.. tuning the chanter based off my low A I thought that it was an a key chanter ... no one makes an a chanter is a relief Needing extenders to lower drones hz is understandable(tenor vs base), I had to shorten my drones to raise pitch but now my chanter WAY overpowers my drones, no wonder pipers love a ab over polly .. just phenomenal My chanters low a being 478.. my tennors are just under 240 and a 110 base ... again between the Bb and B in the 3 and 2 Fast response and great explaining... this I why I toss people your links when I see questions answered only with "I do Skype" (wont mention names) You're online teachings are gonna put ya out of work lol... thanks again

So? Over quarantine I've improved on my finger placement quite well.... ironically now that 70% focus is on my fingers steady presure on the bag is tougher than my green 50/50 focus lol So now I'm thinking... a bag with 2 bladers,... a bladder we blow full with the same blow stick flap valves or moose trap.... and a one way exit with of coarse a one way valve to the second bladder ( smaller than the first,maybe even 80/20?) finished with a regulator on the 2nd that let's out a controlled presure . Thus leaving us in a state that as long as theres air in the 1st bladder , and were squeezing hard enough, our drones and chanter see steady presure .... the 2 need to be stuck to the bottom of the bag,regulator up , to let air flow freely .... too much free time here lol

@@MattWillisBagpiper I will be attempting this Setting a regulator for drones should be easy... getting a chanter reeds presures into the mix I'm debating 1 adjustable regulator in the bladder with a control valve to the chanter Just a macgyver running his thoughts by a piper .. bottom line I guesse is dose diferent notes require diferent presures end of discussion?, or with good tuning and getting the chanter taped and reed scraped to presure is it plausible? An air compressor to a spare tank with a controlled release valve through a filtered hose I was playing pc without blowing lol

Hey Matt, what is your favourite chanter & reed combo for solos?
@MattWillisBagpiper4 жыл бұрын
Well, I haven’t actively competed solo since ‘04... if I were with my equipment right now, my ‘05 Shepherd Blackwood and Shepherd Reed. I have one piece of tape on D and that’s it. Pitching around 478. I do, however prefer a bit higher pitch these days (483-485) so I play my Campbell more. If I had the extra $$$ I’d get a Blackwood Hardie Infinity chanter. As for reed, I would start with Shepherd but I didn’t have enough time with the one infinity chanter I did review to really know the best reed.
