Not massively impressed with the CampBoss Boss Air deflators.
Admittedly they're very new to me. But after the first half a dozen times using them I'm finding them to be very inconsistent.
I was also surprised to find that they're not much faster than my old valve core removing deflater (which was one quarter of the price, and has been maintenance free and consistent for about 7 years I reckon).
If you've got a set, love to hear your thoughts?
Oh and here's build video and details for my 12v setup;

Great Review. There is so many gimmicks out there on the market. I'd rather take the extra time to know what my tyres pressures are rather than relying on an inaccurate device. An extra minute getting pressures correct may save you hours of digging when you hit the sand at 40psi. Thanks for the review Cam.

Very happy with mine, one point you failed to acknowledge is that the quickie style depends on very accurate and correct reassembly of the valve core every use, the camp boss style removes the disassembly/reassembly issues and the potential for a slow leak if not reassembled properly. I have checked mine after deflation and they are very close to the value set every time. Labour saving and really like not disassembling my valves every time.

Pro tip. The ARB inflator works really well as a deflator, you use the trigger with no hose on it rather than the deflator button, it is as fast as the core removal type.

I got these last week, funnily enough. I found them to be accurate, however, I set each one, used it, checked the pressure with a gauge, adjusted, retested. I use two for one pressure and two for another. Set in pairs so I don't have to screw with the adjustment. Marked them with their PSI. They work as advertised without the issues you had, but that isn't to say that won't come in the future. I did have to adjust them, as the pressures did not match the settings initially, but once I went through the above process, they seem to be fine in set pairs for the two main pressures I need. I think the valve deflator is a necessity for offroading. There are many pressures needed. I got these to cover the main ones. Everything else I will use the valve deflator for. Nice review. I like no nonsense.

I don't use the valve-core removal deflators anymore as we've had a couple of slow leaks over the years after the core was damaged somehow. On the other hand, I've also had Stauns that were not reliable and have been using the J T Brooks deflators without issue. The JT Brooks ones are a settable version like the cheap knock-offs in this video. JT Brooks were the inventors of these devices back in the 1980's. I don't know for certain, but I would think that Staun came out with theirs when the Brooks patent ran out.

Gday Cam, I purchased a set a few months ago and had same problem with them sticking before deflation complete. Went on the A4A site and when you click on the deflators in the shop section the is a trouble shoot guide highlight to click on. Quick clean to remove any gunck from the factory and they now work perfectly. Funny thing though old habits die hard and i still check pressures every now and then with my gauge after deflating. Cheers, and keep up the good work your site content is excellent.

I have had a set of Staun tyre deflators in the glovebox of my 4WDS for years and never had an issue. I also have one of those quick deflators ( only used it once ) THEN I bought one of the digital ARB gauges same as the one you have. That is all I use now… just connect that to to the valve ( without a hose attached, obviously) press the lever (not the little button ) and out comes the air…..let it go and you get a perfect digital read out of the pressure. I use it to deflate the air bags too. It would be interesting to time that too.

I had Staun deflators years ago too. They were consistent and never had a drama with them. I’ll have to try the arb gauge as a deflator. I’d imagine it’ll be significantly slower as it’s not removing the valve and I’ll only be able to do one tyre at a time. But I’ll give it a go:

We have the camp boss deflators and had one that was deflating more pressure than set, but we had to pull it apart and clean it out as per the video A4A have. All the others deflate very close to (within 2psi) of the target pressure. We are very happy with them and makes work so much quicker particularly when you have a double axle caravan to do as well (8 tyres in total!). We recommend the camp boss deflators!

Are we so time poor that we need to have devices that promise more freedom to do other things in the meantime? I’ve found that the set deflators are not all that they are cut out to be. Are you going to get three sets for the general pressures you will normally use for different road conditions? What about the need to have different front and rear tyre pressures and don’t forget your trailer etc. I use the old style deflators and use that time to do a tyre inspection and a general look around the wheel area. Also run through check lists in my head and things to inspect while your stopped. The 15 mins your stopped to adjust your tyre pressures and check over your rig is a good time to re-centre and refocus before starting out again. Enjoy the journey and the process and stop being in such a hurry.

I had a similar situation with my brass tire deflators. I ended up pulling them apart and took a Q tip loaded with some polishing compound chucked up in my hand drill and gave the sealing surface a quick polish. Also took the rubber plunger out and gave it a very light coat of silicon grease, and then wiped as much of it back off as possible. This just makes everything slick and reduces the chance things sticking. The sticking in the beginning caused me to have the preset incorrect. All is good now. I have mine set to 18 and can get all four tires to hit 17-19 consistantly. I found that the sun hitting one side of the vehicle can cause that side of the vehicle to be the slightly higher pressure over the other side.

Great review....if you had done this prior to me buying a set of these, I may have thought twice about it. My motivation for spending the overly high price was to try and save the pain in my old worn out knees. They do help a lot from that perspective, but as you noted, they are not that much quicker, and certainly nothing like the sales pitch suggests. I have only used mine a couple of times, but on first use I had one that was somewhat slower than the rest and did not cut off at set pressure - just kept slowly leaking air. I pulled it apart and found multiple fragments of white plastic floating around inside and one piece blocking one of the air outlet holes. Cleaned this junk out and it (so far) has worked well. Might be worth checking for debris inside them, and in particular, blocking of the outlet holes. I think the cut off is highly dependent on having the correct air flow.

Very interesting Cam 👍 I was very close to pulling the trigger on a set of these cos I have heard they're better than stauns cos they're easily adjustable. I got a set of Chinese staun knockoffs that I got as a freebie when I bought something else. They didn't work well so I just unscrewed the end off them and just use it as a quick deflator basically. Just screw the vase on and it presses the valve and air comes out quickly. I can only do one at a time but it's pretty simple and very effective. Good honest review mate. Have found exactly the same with them . I do like be able to do other things while deflating so I now just use the ARB pressure control with a homemade indeflate.

Are you happy with the ARB pressure control system? I looked at it when I bought the compressor but wasn’t sure if it’s a bit of a gimmick. I’m not a huge fan of everything requiring an app on your phone to work.

@@WildTouring Trust me mate I get your concern with apps I have a few things on my car that require apps. Somethings are just horrible to connect and painful (gme XRS im looking at you) but I can honestly say this just connects without any intervention as soon as you open app and just works flawlessly.

Have used the camp boss deflators, i have the staun deflators, years ago. They where the same as your experience with boss air, inconsistent and unreliable. I gave them away and bough the arb deflator. More effort required but i know the tyres are deflated to my preferred pressure.

Hey Cam. I've got some preset deflators from ebay. Not marked, so you have to set them on a pre deflated tyre, no drama. They are also brass and a bit bigger, don't think that's a drama either, ya shouldn't be going that fast (wheel balance). I've only used them a few times, but they work every time. I bought 2 sets, one set at 22 pounds and one at 15. Need a set for the van tho. I reckon the advantage is that you can screw them on and drive away, no need to wait.

Great review mate, saved me a purchase! Have been teetering on pressing the buy button a few times and this was exactly what I was worried it would do (had a set of the old school ones where you set the psi with an allen key and had similar experience where it was a pain to get anything staying accurate). Onto the indaflate which has been great so far, about to do a 6mth review vid myself

Gidday Cam. I have the CampBoss Deflaters and have only used them a handful of times. I also found they were inconsistent with the set PSI markings and the actual PSI of the tyre. I was tossing up with the Staun Deflaters. Sounds like i should have gone with them.
@WildTouring
@WildTouring 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Staun deflators were much more accurate in my opinion (had a set years ago). They’re just a bit more fiddly to initially set up. I like to have a gauge on my deflator so that I know exactly where it’s at pressure wise. Lots of comments on the video about the maxtrax indeflate. Might give that a go!

Thanks for an honest review mate. Seems to be hard to find on KZbin. I must admit I have the campboss ones and have only so far used them once with no problems. I found that if you have a internal tpms on the tyres they don't work so well. The best way to use them with a tpms is to set them low as possible and monitor the tpms until you hit the desired pressure. I found on a tyre without the tpms i found they work a hell of a lot better.
@WildTouring
@WildTouring 2 жыл бұрын
That’s interesting! No internal TPMS on my rig, mine are external screw on cap sensors.
@insaynbcr

The only issue with watching the TPMS display is the delay that can happen between what the tires are, and what the display reads. There is sometimes up to 10 seconds of delay on my 17 Tacoma display to catch up. I have the brass deflators, as well as a two tire hose contraptions for fill up with a very accurate and quick digitial gauge that I can watch during fill up.

Can't go past the Maxtrax Indeflate for letting down, or pumping up tyres. Quick connect to the valve, and open the shuttle valve and let it go. No bending down, messing around with anything. Very very simple. Prob the best thing I bought. Even lets me pump up 2 tyres at a time, and Im finished well before anyone else when we get back to the bitumen.

Hi Cam, I recon you are ok with monitoring your tire sets with your TPMS while traveling and less rely on tire deflators. I tried to find a decent, recent review and comparison, not much out there.. maybe you or Nathan could have a look into it. For sure the version with sensors inside, not screw on dust cap version. 10 tires set !?! Cheers

I actually had a problem with my first deflator that I bought. Good brand not a cheapy and on about the second use the bit that screws over the outside of the valve kept blowing off and the valve stem took off like the space shuttle. I lost about 3 valve stems which was quite disconcerting but luckily I had a supply of them. It could have been nasty if not. It only did it on a couple of valves and the people who sold it to me replaced it without question and said that they had never heard of it happening before. The replacement hasn't done it but I'm still a bit wary using it.

So glad I’ve come across your review, I too have the same issue and have had since they were new, not once have they ever been accurate and they are out by a lot too anything from 6 psi to 12 or more psi, out of the 4 deflators only 1 gets somewhere near the set pressures usually within 2 to 4 psi. I tried everything to get them to work as advertised but gave up, I sent an email explaining my issues and their reply from the information I submitted was that they are working within specs🤣 god knows what that person was smoking at the time but 12psi plus at a time inaccurate I’d doubt that is within specs. Thanks again for the vid at least I can now eliminate the possibility I got a dud set which is what I had concluded to. Cheers Jason.

Cam, off topic, after watching your review of the 30 second awning I’ve decided to buy one.. I went on line and at checkout it didn’t accept your promo code.it’s not a problem though as I feel I buggered around to much and the offer has expired .. The discount isn’t overly important as I am more interested in supporting your channel.. LMAO, i'm not alone. I curerntly have 1 faulty off the set of 4 on route, getting replaced by A4A shop. Have also tested all 4 units multiple times, up and down from 40psi to various pressures at 5psi intervals (10,15,20,25,30,35). The results were all inconsistent, with a variance higher than 2psi (but within 6psi most of the times). They commonly stopped prior to or half way down on pressure (around 28-35 psi, when set to say 15 or 20psi). Even the guy at the servo said "you again? are they sorted or what?" On two occasions offroad they did not stop and went way lower (on one wheel only), once took me to 6psi and 8psi when set to 15 and 18 respectively on HT tyres which was concerning on sand bead wise, had to air back up when airing down (which sucked ). I was sent a sheet on maintenance (check for sand, clean and relube internals basically) by the retailer (helpful), did that twice, similar results. I isolated the faulty one and requested the replacement (which was agreed and i'm waiting for snail mail to deliver). I feel they do have either a design flaw or a quality control issue. Quiet overpriced IMO. 2xquick deflators (1 person or two persons) and a trusty gauge on the side is way to go i think.
