I hope to eventually be able to camp with ole but his stress levels were way to high. Maybe van camping would be better.

Was it the first time you were camping with the dog? Then, of course the dog was a little bit "on guard" and couldn't sleep. It's a lot of unfamiliar noises. Don't give up, just give him a chance. Maybe he felt u was worried about him, u know he can feel that, and that makes it even harder for him to relax.
