Hi Corporal, I subbed to this channel. Good stuff! I also learned a little twist o the taut line hitch the other day. You can finish it with a quick release rather than pulling all the line through. Just pull a loop through and tighten it up. It doesn't weaken the knot but makes untying it much faster if it has been under load. What do you think?

Americans are truly blessed to have retreats in the wild to pitch a tent and "commune" with nature. After five + years in the Philippines, I can tell you that the Walmart YURT would be Shangri-la for many of the poor here in the Phils. Great video. I bought that yurt and took it for a 8 day trip in south Ms this past March. Mine wasn't set up right enough the first rain storm and we got wet ....2 days later I'd reset stakes and tightened it up ALOT and no rain. The biggest grip I have is the door poles on mine are a tad large so I need to cut 1/2 inch off each side to make it fit right. I also replaced.the wire weenie stakes with 20p nails with a washer on the end.

Just found this channel. I'm an avid outdoors fan and I like your videos for a few reasons. I suck at knots, for one. You make good use of a minimal amount of tools. And finally, when I'm stuck indoors, I can escape for a bit putting one of your videos on...you do a good job editing your videos to make me feel like I'm there breathing that clean fresh air without making it all into an excessive lecture and "how to". You are brief and straight to the point. Great stuff!

Enjoyed the video. This is the first one of yours I've seen. As an old former Boy Scout (as in the early '60s) we did a good bit of camping and we had one rule that was stressed and enforced on each of our trips. Leave your campsite better than you found it. If you pack it in, you pack it out. And if you find something left behind by others (trash) pack it out, too. I'm pretty certain that you do this, too. Other things. Campfire safety. If you cook in the morning - NO wood added to the fire once you are done cooking. If you do not need the fire for cooking, there is no need to add wood to the fire. And before you leave be sure the fire is OUT. Once you think the fire is out, put your hand on every inch covered by the fire. If any spot is too hot to touch, the fire is not out. Put it out.

The tent did get very hot in the daytime but cooled down nicely in the evening/ night. The large windows let lots of air flow help to cool it, and we did not have any shade. Had some massive storms, held up nicely without leaks. Lots of room inside. The table in the middle was great for glasses, flashlight, cell phone. Hoping it still is good next summer!

I'll tell you something about making camp fires. I have lived in the woods for 15 years by myself and I discovered something that will keep a fire going indefinitely. What I discovered is that when you begin to make the placement for where the fire will be after the stone circle is made and your about to make a fire always place a wood floor inside the rock circle you made buy using 1 to 3 inch logs tightly fitted together parallel with each other then, on top of the parallel log floor arrangement place a 6 up to a 10 in diameter log on top to the back of the wood floor leaning against one of the rocks in the back then take your kindling and stack it up in a thatched "square", not a tee-pee arrangement, up against the log on top of the floor. The thatched square arrangement allows the flames to cover more wood as it starts up and the fire will start much quicker. Then after that burns and creates the coals place the logs on top against the log in the back as you like. This kind of fire lasts and lasts until the single 6 to 10 in log you started with dwindles down and becomes hot coals. Just place another over the coals in the same place and start again.

This was a rough summer. Super dry, fire restrictions (needed), and the National Forests closures. Pile on top of that everyone from Phoenix rushing north to get away from the heat... I have lived and worked all over, but AZ is my home and I won’t leave it (not yet anyway).

@@recall5811 Whereabouts was this, if you don't mind me asking? I gather it was off of I-17 somewhere (I'm in NorPhx). We used to camp in a box canyon that was east of Crown King, but it was private land owned by a family friend that has since sold the land.

19:14-19:21 I got Crazy Frog vibes from that. Frog: "Yay! I'm on KZbin. Look at me, ma!... Ok, that's enough KZbin." Nice to see some of the knots you use explained too. When I watch your other videos, I often wonder how you make these adjustable/quick release knots.

Another great one, Corp. I would be very interested to know if, when you struck camp, did that yurt kept the rain out or did it leak like a sieve? Thank you for your service and your time invested in these informative videos!

No wonder it got too hot in that tent.... The whole jest of chosing a yurt is in it being made of thick cotton material that will actually keep a cooler climate during both day and night. The Walmart thingie being nylon....makes it "just a yurt shaped tent", which is prone to making the tent camper a hammock camper against his will in hot weather ;) But I´m yapping....^^ Thanks for the vid, corporal :) Main mission directive was met: Went out in the field and had FUN! :)

My thoughts exactly. This is a single pole tent that has 6 sides. There's no wall "structure", no roof poles, wrong type of materials; Nowhere close to a yurt.

... I guess you could call it a "sorta-kinda like a yurt; tent" ... be good for the kids to stretch out in during camping away from public camp grounds ... primitive camping with the family and kids ...

I, personally. prefer packing into the bush for a day or 2 before setting up camp, but my wife doesn't, so I tend to do both pack and tent camping. Sometimes you just gotta compromise.

I was a mite concerned with the creek, too. Those tall sides with recent slides would tell me to stay away from it after rains when it could flash flood.

I have used this tent out in the desert. It worked great!!! Only tent I have used out there that withstood 75 mi look e per hour wind. Some sand did come in, but that ok. It wasn't alot. I had a queen size elevated camp bed. Rows of banana boxes filled wih gear and food. Some dressers and chairs. Had a rug on the floor. And a Mister heater. As it was winter, it gets very cold at night in the desert. Was very happy with it.

It might seem like a small thing, but I have watched a couple of your vids now and one thing you always say I have heard very few times by others. Every time you are tying knots you "dress" the knot. Like I said it might seem like a small thing to some but when Dressing the knot, this keeps the rope from slipping when every loop and tie is in line and uniform. Very nice to finally hear someone doing this.

I’m one of those “knife guys.” I have to know: is that a Spyderco or a Swiss Army Knife? Really enjoy your channel. I’m subscribed to over 300 channels, and I’ve only clicked the notification bell (for ALL notifications) on only 5 of them. You’re one of the five. Just absolutely excellent content: thorough, useful, interesting. Great stuff. 👍 I’m not even close to having seen all your videos, but I’d really like to know your take on how to go about choosing the knife that’s right for you. Not that I don’t know....I’m a “knife guy” afterall. But, I’d really like to know the opinion of someone who is skilled in survival, and enjoys being in nature AND who has served in the military. That combination of survival/“tactics” approach to choosing a blade is very interesting to me. Anyway, great vid, superb channel! 👍
