Hi Corporal, I subbed to this channel. Good stuff! I also learned a little twist o the taut line hitch the other day. You can finish it with a quick release rather than pulling all the line through. Just pull a loop through and tighten it up. It doesn't weaken the knot but makes untying it much faster if it has been under load. What do you think?

Enjoyed the video. This is the first one of yours I've seen. As an old former Boy Scout (as in the early '60s) we did a good bit of camping and we had one rule that was stressed and enforced on each of our trips. Leave your campsite better than you found it. If you pack it in, you pack it out. And if you find something left behind by others (trash) pack it out, too. I'm pretty certain that you do this, too. Other things. Campfire safety. If you cook in the morning - NO wood added to the fire once you are done cooking. If you do not need the fire for cooking, there is no need to add wood to the fire. And before you leave be sure the fire is OUT. Once you think the fire is out, put your hand on every inch covered by the fire. If any spot is too hot to touch, the fire is not out. Put it out.

Yep, in the mid 80’s we camped once a month with the troop I was in. Our leader was a forestry ranger, so we got to go camp at some really cool locations in the NorCal redwoods and mountains. Twice a year we would do survival training. I’d love to have that experience again, but my body is too broken anymore. That’s why I love these videos so much. They allow me to enjoy the outdoors through these channels.

@@recall5811 As a smoker. I never understood, how people could be so callous with their butts. I bring ashtrays with me everywhere. And butts burn up in camfires just fine lol. So YOu would not have to pick up debris from One like me. Even before smoking went out of fashion. I was the considerate smoker, that didn't smoke around other people that didn't smoke, and didn't smoke in their homes, even if permission was granted. It just felt wrong to me. But, hey, Smoking was a common deal fifty years ago. And it is a simple thing to be considerate, of other folks.

i bought this yurt on a whim a couple years ago... my kids enjoy using this more than the pop-up camper :/ sets up in 5 minutes flat. We survived a torrential thunder storm / downpour for 2 days straight and it didnt leak 1 drop - didnt waterproof it or anything. Love the fact there's no fly. i will buy another one of these when i retire my current one - that's how much i love it. just get some real tent stakes and you're golden

I actually had a next door neighbor who visited some foreign country (Sorry, don't know the name of it.) with his wife and loved yurts so much that he built one in his backyard. He also had a pretty impressive garden that spanned both his front and back yards which included both edible and non edible plants and he even made his own compost for it. As for fertilizer, I don't know what he did, but maybe, it's something that I don't want to think about, if you catch my drift. All in all, he's a pretty interesting guy and it was cool having him as a neighbor.

Great video. I bought that yurt and took it for a 8 day trip in south Ms this past March. Mine wasn't set up right enough the first rain storm and we got wet ....2 days later I'd reset stakes and tightened it up ALOT and no rain. The biggest grip I have is the door poles on mine are a tad large so I need to cut 1/2 inch off each side to make it fit right. I also replaced.the wire weenie stakes with 20p nails with a washer on the end.

With the line locks, I believe you make the loop between the middle hole and the knotted hole. This way you have tension across two holes above the stake, not just one. But they are unnecessary if you know the basic knots. On the other hand, I use anodized aluminum Figure-9 clips on my tarp guy-outs. I like the speed and adjustibility.

Walmart might call that a yurt, but it is nothing more than a round tent. Yurts are portable, circular, have an accordion lattice wall, a tension band, radial rafters leading up to a central compression ring, which eliminates the need for a central pole and is covered in some kind of fabric. In colder climates, there are usually thicker walls and roofs, as there is often inner and outer walls and roofs with an insulating layer in between.

I'll tell you something about making camp fires. I have lived in the woods for 15 years by myself and I discovered something that will keep a fire going indefinitely. What I discovered is that when you begin to make the placement for where the fire will be after the stone circle is made and your about to make a fire always place a wood floor inside the rock circle you made buy using 1 to 3 inch logs tightly fitted together parallel with each other then, on top of the parallel log floor arrangement place a 6 up to a 10 in diameter log on top to the back of the wood floor leaning against one of the rocks in the back then take your kindling and stack it up in a thatched "square", not a tee-pee arrangement, up against the log on top of the floor. The thatched square arrangement allows the flames to cover more wood as it starts up and the fire will start much quicker. Then after that burns and creates the coals place the logs on top against the log in the back as you like. This kind of fire lasts and lasts until the single 6 to 10 in log you started with dwindles down and becomes hot coals. Just place another over the coals in the same place and start again.

I’m one of those “knife guys.” I have to know: is that a Spyderco or a Swiss Army Knife? Really enjoy your channel. I’m subscribed to over 300 channels, and I’ve only clicked the notification bell (for ALL notifications) on only 5 of them. You’re one of the five. Just absolutely excellent content: thorough, useful, interesting. Great stuff. 👍 I’m not even close to having seen all your videos, but I’d really like to know your take on how to go about choosing the knife that’s right for you. Not that I don’t know....I’m a “knife guy” afterall. But, I’d really like to know the opinion of someone who is skilled in survival, and enjoys being in nature AND who has served in the military. That combination of survival/“tactics” approach to choosing a blade is very interesting to me. Anyway, great vid, superb channel! 👍

Can I make a suggestion, it would be easier to marinate and precook chicken at home, then kabob it with veggies for the cookfire at the campsite. As far as the Yurt is concerned, it would be great for a backyard family bbq with the Jones's, I wouldn't recommend it for much else.

I loved, Loved, LOVED this video. Learned so much! I especially loved that the trip did NOT go off exactly as planned. Some of the best, most memorable moments are created when the Plan A changes. Extra special when a USMC Marine is along with an excellent, well prepared for Plan B. What's not to love? Um, nothing 🙂

No wonder it got too hot in that tent.... The whole jest of chosing a yurt is in it being made of thick cotton material that will actually keep a cooler climate during both day and night. The Walmart thingie being nylon....makes it "just a yurt shaped tent", which is prone to making the tent camper a hammock camper against his will in hot weather ;) But I´m yapping....^^ Thanks for the vid, corporal :) Main mission directive was met: Went out in the field and had FUN! :)

My thoughts exactly. This is a single pole tent that has 6 sides. There's no wall "structure", no roof poles, wrong type of materials; Nowhere close to a yurt.

I can see the problem with the yurt before you get it set up , the problem is the material as it is very thin making it not very wind resistant . The other problem is the center post not being strong enough to support against the wind . One is the last is the tent stakes
